A good book for taking a nostalgic look back By Amazon Customer Sharon Cathcart gives an interesting and playful look at what was happening in Portland's music scene in the early eighties. It's very clear that this same scene played a large part in helping Sharon, who was a young and innocent woman at the time, find herself.Though it wanders more than a few times into her personal life, I can see why it did the wandering. What was written about the bands and their members was inside information that wouldn't have been available to someone who wasn't personally smack in the middle of it all. With her meandering she gives credence to her story.A good book for taking a nostalgic look back. Being from the Portland area, it was a real treat to read this book. The memories it brought back were treasures I had nearly forgotten.

As someone who was there and lived through some of this stuff, I can say, quite emphatically, that Sharon Cathcart has hit the nail on the head with her insightful, storytelling skill. She perfectly captures the mood and spirit of that scene at that time – the excitement, the disappointment, the insanity, and the expectation. She swiftly covers quite a bit of ground, but never gets ahead of herself. And things never slow down and get dull, either. It’s a vigorous and fun read. I was a member of one of the bands that Sharon portrays in her book, and she definitely got it right. Something that I will certainly read again!

A labor of love By Amazon Customer Since I came of age in the Pacific Northwest (Seattle, not Portland)in the early 80's, I had at least a passing familiarity with much of what was written in You Had To Be There. The author does an excellent job of capturing the vibe of what it was like to be young and part of a thriving music scene. Many passages had me nodding my head and saying "Yes, I remember that." You don't need to be familiar with any of the bands to enjoy this book - you just have to be able to remember what it's like to be young, alive and feeling like you're part of the music.
