3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Poetic and Imaginative but confusing at times! By Sylviastel Virginia Woolf was one of the finest writers of the last century. She is more well-known for her personal battles with depression and suicide and her lesbian relationships with Vita Sackville-West. Danell Jones, the scholar, provides an understanding introduction to the novel and about Virginia Woolfe's inspiration for this novel. It's a personal novel because she lost her brother at an early age.In this novel, Jacob Flanders is a British man who goes to war. When the novel was published in 1922, it was post-World War I. England is still the British Empire but barely hanging and the casualties lost on the battlefield in Europe was staggering for millions of European men. Britain lost hundreds of thousands of their own men. This book focuses on Jacob Flanders, an ordinary British man, who goes off to war. His room is symbolic because your room represents a person's life in their childhood home. There are momentos, photographs, writings, memories, etc.This book is fine at times but it doesn't seem like we really know Jacob Flanders. Perhaps, Woolf's writings were that we really don't know another person's life in detail. We're still private people. A person like Jacob Flanders may be flawed, imperfect, but also quiet, unassuming, British, reserved, etc. I don't know what the fuss is with Woolf's writings as to the attention and acclaim she still receives. She has inspired other writers, males and females.Perhaps, Virginia Woolf felt suffocated from her own life as a woman trapped in a male dominated world. This book is more for her brother's loss than for herself. In her writings, she can become genderless and lose herself in her work. Woolf is much more poet and descriptive writer than dramatic writer at times. There is some humor in the text but also the Bloomsbury feel in the text. Woolf was a member of the Bloomsbury literary circle in London, England.It's a shame that Woolf died in 1941 from her suicide. She could have had so much to offer the literary world in England and abroad. Woolf's life is still talked about and written about. The fascination with Woolf isn't about her life and death but who she was as a person, writer, wife, lover, literary critic, etc. Woolf's contributions to literature would have definitely received Dame Commander on par with the British knights of the empire.If Woolf had lived, she would have been treated for her psychiatric problems with medication and therapy.
