15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Nothing wrong with the reproduction By M. Johnston Other reviewers have complained about the reproduction quality of this book. I think that's wrong. It's actually quite fine...it's just not a style which is particularly fashionable right now or that calls attention to itself. The reproductions are done one picture to a page, with no bleeds and no crossing of the gutter. Point one in its favor. They are done with accurate color (i.e., not exaggerated color) and a full tonal range (i.e., accurate contrast, which might look low-contrast to people accustomed to looking at lots of pictures on flickr or elsewhere online, or to those who are free with the sliders in Photoshop). I've seen a number of these pictures in the original, in museums and at Magnum New York, and these reproductions are quite faithful.Finally, the surface is only semi-matte, rather than the glossy plate which is most common in less expensive photo books and, especially, in magazines. Those used to looking at glossy surfaces, or who associate glossiness with quality, might find this lacking. It isn't. I actually like it better.Although the reproduction quality is "democratizing," meaning it doesn't emphasize or exalt one picture over any others or go to any lengths to suggest original prints as unique objects, I actually found it to be one of the plus points about this book.I reviewed this book more extensively at The Online Photographer under the title "Bon bons."

By DNA This book contains 365 images (thus the title 'a YEAR in photography') shot by the past and present members of Magnum Photo Agency. From the 'compositional' stand point, the photos contained in the book are exceptional and inspirational. You can clearly see why the members of Magnum Agency are/were one of the top photographers around. As a photography student, I can 'learn' what makes a good photography by just looking at them. I also like the size of the images. One photo per page (nice!) so you can get a detailed look of each image... BUT what's disappointing is that the paper quality is below average. The paper feels like it's made out of recycled paper, not that anything wrong with it (i'm all for recycling!) but for photos, it's not that great. The paper is so thin for a photo book - i'm afraid i'll rip a page or two when scanning through the book (it actually feels like a magazine than a book!). Also because of the paper quality, the printing job is not that great. The images look like they lost some color during the printing process - they look faded. Also I wish the book has more detailed description of each image - it just has the name of photographer, the location, and the year it was taken - and has title in the Appendix section (why the editor/publisher decided to put title in the Appendix section is anyone's guess). I know good pictures should "tell the story" by itself but wish they have "words" to tell the story too!I wish I could give higher rating because images are fantastic but the printing quality is just terrible - ugh! Only if publisher and editor spent more time on details, this book would have been great. It doesn't do photographers in this book any justice! Their photos deserve better treatment than this!

To be honest, a good photo is a good photo regardless what type of paper it's printed on. If anything the type of paper adds to the allure of the book, and the "analog" nostalgia feeling you get while looking through it.As far as the content, each two page layout contains a date (photo taken date, and sequence date), photographer, location, and photo. All styled in a very minimalistic fashion. Do I want any more info? Not really, as I use books like this for inspiration.Highly recommended.
