From his early days as a founding member of The Clash to his current success as a chiropractor and acupuncturist, the completely entertaining wisdom and life story of Terry Chimes An autobiography with a difference, this book covers the life of a man who appears to many to be a dual personality—surely the crazy muso bashing the drums in a succession of punk and heavy metal rock bands couldn't possibly be the same person as the one offering kind words of wisdom and compassion to the sick? Yet that is the unusual transition made by the author. Terry Chimes shares his story, from his days as the original drummer of The Clash (he left the band in 1977 only to be asked back in 1982), on to a succession of punk and heavy metal bands, to becoming a highly successful chiropractor. Told with humor and empathy this memoir covers his childhood, his entry into the world of rock and roll, his early years with The Clash and why he left the band, and the spiritual insights that have guided his life. The book includes a wealth of true stories ranging from wild antics on the road with a touring rock band to the challenges of carving out an entirely new career.

The Strange Case of Dr Terry and Mr Chimes By The Baker Reflecting Terry Chimes' own life, this autobiography can really be viewed as two books in one. Initially it is the story of his early career as a young drummer back at the beginnings of London punk rock with most notably, 'The Clash,' 'Gen X,' and eventually 'Black Sabbath.' He retells stories of those hedonistic days in detail and without restraint. But so too are the questions that Terry always had - questions about the bigger picture and the meaning of our lives.Having achieved fame and fortune, Terry found it all too shallow, one-dimensional, and felt there was still much missing from his life. He embarked on a career in chiropractic medicine and eventually developed a chain of healing clinics in Europe. But far from being satisfied with this success, Terry was still searching for the answer to the bigger questions: Why are we here? Where do we come from and where do we go when it's over? He sold his chiropractic centres in order to continue his search for meaning in life and now lectures worldwide running Europe's largest consulting business in alternative medicine. In 'The Strange Case of Dr. Terry and Mr. Chimes', Terry Chimes gives us the answers and conclusions he has drawn from a varied and colourful life experience. He also hints at the future journey he hopes to pursue and shares with the readers some much hard-earned wisdom and sage advice. Whilst not being your typical 'sex, drugs, and rock'n'roll' chronicle, it amply demonstrates that there are many paths to be taken. If you too are dismayed by today's culture of globalization, commercialism and corporate greed, then Terry's altruistic determination and resolve will resonate within you and hopefully light a path to your own 'rock'n'roll redemption.' Nice guys don't always finish last....

From the Clash to chiropractic: a thinking rock star By buttsy1 I received a promotional copy of 'Dr Terry and Mr Chimes' through the Library Thing Early Reviewers program ([...]As a young adult I was involved in seemingly endless arguments about music: Donna Summer or the Sex Pistols? The Bee Gees or The Clash? It all seemed so obvious to me - I went with punk and progressive rock.So a memoir by Terry Chimes was always going to attract my attention. The structure of memoir is quite straightforward. Chimes tells of his childhood, what led to him becoming involved in the rock music industry, and what his other interests were. He sets the scene nicely for everything to come together later on in the tale. He expands on each stage of his life: as a rock star, what happened immediately afterwards, and his (almost) complete change of direction into life as health service provider, teacher and mentor. The story of the early days of The Clash is interesting, as is his explanation for way he left the band, and why that took so long to do. More interesting was his return to the band after a couple of years away. An interesting theme that comes through, especially during his music career, both when trying to establish his credibility, and later when he was well known, is preparedness. The importance of preparing oneself for a task cannot be understated. The lengths Chimes went to be prepared for an audition (or an exam) are admirable and if that were the only lesson to be learned from this memoir it would be worth it.But there are further lessons to be learned from this interesting life: the reasons things go wrong with a new venture and complacency are two other strong themes. The Clash (and I imagine legion other rock bands) ultimately failed because too much was expected too often. A rock star career is a tenuous thing, and in its promise and brevity could be compared to the life of a professional athlete. In both cases the punters (and managers) expect a perfect performance every time, and unfortunately few humans are made to do that. I have often wondered how a musician can get up on stage every night and play the same songs, and still manage to seem fresh. I recall seeing a documentary a few years ago that featured Green Day (a band it could be argued that would never have come into existence were it not for The Clash, The Ramones and the New York Dolls), and they spoke very seriously of the importance of being perfect, because many in the audience would be seeing them for the first and only time. It was an impressive sentiment to say the least, but can a band do it every night? There is a risk in being successful in whatever career a person makes with their life. That risk is in thinking that one is at the top of one's game, and therefore relaxing. As Chimes points out with a terrific tale involving Tommy Lee there's always a new way to approach a task. There are plenty of clichés to underline this: "if you're at the top there's only one way you can go" and "you can only coast when you are going downhill". Chimes, it seems, has never let this happen to him. He takes us a step further, by challenging us with this: `Those who never dare to get out of their comfort zone are severely limited in life'.Chimes has been very successful both in his music career, and his later life work as a chiropractor. None of it has been lucky - he has worked hard with goals in mind, and that is a profound lesson for all.One aspect of life as a rock star that Chimes does not deal with in any depth is money management. The Clash were incredibly successful (compared to most other bands) and he toured with Black Sabbath, a band that has always had many fans. Why did he have no money then when he needed to enrol in his chiropractic studies? There has been in the press recently discussion of the finances of the Rolling Stones and the Beatles and how little control they had, and how naïve they were in their managing their own companies. I just wonder if The Clash had similar issues.`The Strange Case of Dr Terry and Mr Chimes' is an entertaining and worthwhile read, and one doesn't really need to have been a fan of The Clash to appreciate it, although some knowledge of the music scene at the time is an advantage. As with all good memoirs, this is not just a life story; it has wise lessons learned from experience to share.(Finally, a personal disclosure: I still haven't seen Saturday Night Fever)
