Do you think that to get a bigger career in improv you have to run off to one more class or one more show? If so, you may be running in the wrong direction. If you want to have a bigger career in improv and you can quite figure out why you're stuck, you may need to search inside for the answers. In this straight-forward, easy-to-read book, improv teacher Jimmy Carrane, co-author of Improving Better, author of Improv Therapy and host of the Improv Nerd podcast, has identified five things that often prevent improvisers from having a bigger career: perfectionism, resentments (and expectations), low self-esteem, playing small, and not taking care of yourself. Carrane combines real-world advice and practical tools with personal stories from his more than 30 years of teaching and performing at Second City, iO Chicago and The Annoyance Theatre to help you recognize and let go of each of these character traits so you can get more opportunities and make the most out of your improv career.

I've been doing improv for a decade and I've noticed - some of us hit that wall. What is that wall? What makes that wall? Do you go around it, over it, under it, ignore it, yes and...it? Frustratingly, its ourselves that add crap to that already stout wall. If you're like me, you live the lifestyle of the classic improviser - running to teach classes, running to workshops, doing shows, doing a corporate gig. You've forgotten to actually stop and take care of you. Life obviously flavors your game, but it also obviously affects your work. Sometimes not for the better. Its ok to take some time off, its ok to not be out after every show drinking 'til stoopid late (I know, whaaaaat?)...Jimmy tells the Big 5 - Embrace Imperfection, Let go of resentments, Believe you are worth it, Put yourself out there and Take care of yourself. My god man, you're inside my head. And thats whats so amazing about Jimmy Carrane - he's the improviser's improviser. He's been where we are (or going or been). Again and again, he demonstrates that gets it and he's been through it. Jimmy also really sets it up to show that you CAN move beyond where you are by actively and proudly marketing yourself as an artist. I think many of us don't quite see ourselves in that light. Jimmy does and now....I do too. That's empowering. And important. Read this book. Jimmy rocks.

By Walter "Eric" Rau The 5 Steps presented in The Inner Game of Improv are much like the 12 Steps of recovery programs from which Jimmy Carrane draws some of his inspiration: a simple program, but not an easy one. This Kindle book is both a quick read and a provocative one, worth rereading and pondering for anyone who is seeking to improve their improv life. It examines ways in which we are our own biggest obstacles to success in improv and is focused more on what we can do offstage to become "bigger" in our art, in the best sense of the word. As a newish improv student, I've already started taking the steps Carrane outlines and am seeing positive results - I'm glad I have a Kindle version to refer back to anytime I want some quick reinforcement!
