The Earth is dying, the only hope of escape is to win the lottery and be taken to Karal to be an alien mate. But what if the lottery wasn't random? What if they want you for what you know, and to punish you for what you've done? Deceit:Chosen by the Karal (Book One) can be read as a standalone book. This is the fate awaiting Elissa. She didn't enter the lottery, but somehow she still won. As the puzzle unravels, she finds herself trapped, with no option but to go to the planet Karal. All she can hope, is that her chosen alien mate will see her for who she really is, and not for the person he thinks she is. Marin has been chosen to be the first prize in the Earth lottery. With no females of their own, the Karalians have no choice but to take females from the dying Earth. Only this time they are avoiding taking them by force, unless absolutely necessary. But with resistance to their presence on Earth, his mission soon changes. Not only does he have the responsibility of creating the first of the next generation of Karalians, he also has to find a way to change the attitude of the Earth female he has been given. But is there anyway to change the opinion of a woman who is responsible for the deaths of two of his species? Time is not on his side, because as soon as the female is with child, she will be sent to the breeding house, there to be shut away until she gives birth to their child. When he starts to fall for Elissa, he questions whether they are better off together. However, the Hierarchy rule Karal, can he persuade them to break with traditions? For adults only, contains scorching hot alien/human scenes

Harmony Raines has strutted her stuff and once again surprised us all with a foray into the wonderful world of science fiction and what a delightfully entertaining treat it is! I love it! Deceit is the first book in her brand spanking new series, Chosen by the Karal and it totally rocks, people! Each release is a stand alone novella with no cliffhanger but if I understand correctly, each book will revolve around the same premise but will feature a different couple and will also include several of the same characters in each book. This is just so exciting! I love science fiction! The premise of the series:In a future dystopian earth, the planet is overpopulated and on the verge of destruction. The air is polluted and there is a severe shortage of food, fuel, natural resources and breathable oxygen. Many of earth's animals are now extinct. Six months ago, an alien race called the Karal arrived via a wormhole offering to help mankind and save the day in exchange for an alliance and breedable women. Wait! What? Women? A lottery has been called and women that meet certain criteria have the option to enter their names in the drawing. And just what is the prize if you win the lottery, you ask? To move to the planet Karal where food and oxygen is abundant, become the very lucky mate to one of the handsome aliens, serve as his personal broodmare and become an alien baby machine. Huh? Wait, that's the prize? But of course, humans would not be human without groups of violent, organized resistance and they intend to make their presence known. The plot of this story:Beautiful scientist Elissa Sergeant is not excited at all about the new lottery and has no intention of entering so when her name is called as the winner, she is more than shocked. What the heck? How in the world did that happen??? She immediately suspects that the lottery has been rigged and her past has come back to haunt her. When she returned home, she had told no one of her secret shame and was desperately trying to put the entire betrayal in her past but obviously the aliens have other plans for her. The irony has certainly not escaped her that after being blamed for the bombing of a Karalian embassy and causing the deaths of ten humans, albeit innocently, she would now be used to propagate and procreate for the aliens. A lifelong sentence of breeding aliens but just how long would that life be? Maybe not long at all if they truly suspect she played a part in the bombing. And if anyone here finds out, she most likely would be thrown in jail and charged with speciesism. But still, the last thing in the world, or should I say universe, she wants is to be taken to Karal and mated with a Karalian who seem to be so cruel, cold and harsh.Out of all the males from Karal, Marin has been chosen to be the first to breed with an Earth female and become the first "husband" for an earth woman. They have no females on the Planet Karal and time is running out for their race. They desperately need a compatible species with whom to procreate to prevent their extinction. Earth females are sexually and genetically compatible so in return for earth women, the Karalians are trying to save the human race from its own destruction although he seriously questions if they're truly worth the effort since many of the humans seem to resent and despise them and are actively involved in organized efforts to kill members of his species. No one from earth suspects he had known for two weeks that his mate would be Elissa Sargeant, the woman responsible for one of the biggest resistance allies since they had arrived which had ultimately resulted in the deaths of not only ten humans but also two Karalians which they had kept secret. But if she's guilty of these accusations, why in the world did she enter the lottery? Or did she? Hmmm....I wonder? Now it was his job to breed with her and change her preconceived notions about Karalians. He isn't looking forward to the task at hand or at least he wasn't. Now seeing her in person, he is strangely attracted to her and now he is having feelings for her? What has she done to him? He wants her and as soon as possible! What the heck? How can this be? Things are seldom as they seem and secrets always exist but just who is deceiving whom??? Let the games begin or in this case, the lottery! The book is written as dual, alternating points of view, his and hers, and gives the reader an insightful peek into the mindset of both primary characters. The story is exciting, original, inventive, unusual, well executed, fast-paced, romantic and arousing. The dialogue is well written and flows effortlessly. The characters are fascinating, captivating, well developed and engaging. Raines combines these elements into a brilliantly entertaining science fiction story filled with danger, adventure and romance. No spoilers from me but I will say this...Beautiful, innocent scientist-check! Handsome, sexy, color-changing alien-check! Danger, drama, lies, deceit, secrets, betrayal and some surprising plot twists-check! Heated attraction, fiery passion, sweet romance and some steamy, dreamy sex-you bet! That and a whole lot more! I can hardly wait for the next book in this exciting new series! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read!!!

I'm glad I did. The first half of the book is designed to set up the series so we don't get to spend much time with the main characters as a couple. Or even much time when they arrive to the new planet (book ends at 89%). I would have liked to have seen more once they arrived. I am hoping we'll see more in subsequent books.Again, thank you for being a KU author!

This could be a really good series, if the author would actually write a book rather than a short story/novella. There is a solid concept for the alien world. Needs a little more character development. Also, all the "heros" don't want a mate, but they all have "love at first sight syndrome.". Please draw out the angst a little more, it makes for a better read and then you are rooting for the relationship.
