Dedicated, enthusiastic collection of rare gems... all in one volume By Lord Heath THE FACTSThis is the second of many paperbacks showcasing the films of Laurel and Hardy. Each volume focuses its attention on an individual film and has pages of publicity material used to promote the film during its initial run (and often re-releases).Saps At Sea was the last feature-length film that Laurel & Hardy made for legendary film producer Hal Roach. This booklet (it wouldn't be fair to call it a book) features re-printed posters, newspaper clippings, lobby cards, interviews and adverts which were published in 1940 when the film was released. Each issue has a glossy cover, and approximately 11x8.5" in size. This volume is 48 pages, of which 37 pages are used for actual material from this film.THE OPINONSThere are 6 pages less of material here than in Volume 1 (SWISS MISS), but the quality of the print is noticeably an improvement. The work herein has been collected over a long period of time by a dedicated author, whose previous works are moulded in the same style of presentation. To have so much information about one film all in one place may be a little overwhelming for some, but for the true die-hard Laurel & Hardy fan this is an interesting and quite enjoyable offering from Hyatt. As the set of issues continues to be expanded, this would make a nice addition to the bookshelf of any fan.

Laurel & Hardy's Farewell to Their Longtime Studio By Eric Schultz "Saps At Sea" was the final film that the great comedy team of Laurel & Hardy made at the Hal Roach Studios. This was the studio where they officially became a team, and where they made most of their films. After some years of unresolve issues and disputes with the producer, Laurel & Hardy decided not to renew any more contracts with Roach, so that they could see where else they could work. This last feature film of theirs for Roach was a fond farewell to the co-stars and crew members whom they had worked with since 1927. While not one of their best, it was still a happy film, with plenty of gags and routines to please any comedy fan. They have silly dialogue, some slapstick, and plenty of the facial expressions and reactions that endeared them to fans around the world. In this film, they have their final interactions with co-stars such as James Finlayson, Charlie Hall, Harry Bernard and comedian Ben Turpin.I.J. Hyatt has long been a collector of a variety of items related to Laurel & Hardy. In this book, he shares with us the promotional materials which were used in 1940 to advertize this L&H feature. These are from official "pressbooks", which were sent to movie theaters, for their managers to use locally to advertize the film and hopefully to bring more people to the theatres which were showing it. Many of these items were used for a theater's newspaper advertizements for that week. Looking through these examples of artwork, and reading the various "write-ups" gives us a more complete perspective on the time when this film was first released to movie theatres. It is interesting to see the styles and "angles" which were used to try to attract more people to come and see "Saps At Sea" on May 3, 1940.
