By Jen I wasn't sure how much I'd like these Querkles books (we ordered the other one, too) because I don't particularly like the color-by-number format. It feels too much like THE MAN is pushing his concepts of art and beauty on my personal expression aura. Remember kids, no one is allow to enclose or confine your creative highs. You are a multidimensional creature born of the wind and the moon, and you can use any colors you like, anywhere you want to.Ok, I'm not THAT weird about coloring books, but I do like to do my own thing. So this was kind of a leap of faith for me to try...I am really impressed with these books. Yes, they are color-by-number, but you get to choose the colors and palettes. For each picture you choose 5 colors, the only requirement being that they go from light to dark. You can use a grayscale, a rainbow, all reds, etc. We've tried a zillion combinations, and have had so much fun we're reordering the books to color them again! We use the Prismacolor Scholar pencils, but you could use any medium that gives you enough colors to let you mix and match to your heart's delight. It's easier to get a good range of, say, purples, if you have a bunch to choose from. The only "rule" that seems to matter is that you do want your five colors to be pretty distinctive from each other or the final result can be a little muddy. Each picture is on one side of a page, so you can use paints or markers if you choose. There is a listing in the back of what each picture is, but I like to just wing it and find out what I'm coloring as I go. If you do the light colors and go through to the dark, sometimes it's a mystery until the very end! But if you'd rather plan and use specific colors on a specific picture, you can so that, too.Definitely glad we purchased these!

It a bigger sized book than I thought. For fun, you might frame your favorites. I wish they'd come out with fantasy pictures or animals. That would be great!
