About the Author Originally from Fairfax, Virginia, Amelia Kallman grew up entertaining audiences on many of Washington D.C.’s most prestigious stages. She studied acting at Marymount Manhattan College, and Shakespeare at the British American Dramatics Academy. While living in the penthouse of The Chelsea Hotel with her partner, Norman Gosney, they ran an illegal speakeasy, The Blushing Diamond, before moving to Shanghai to open China’s first burlesque nightclub, the award-winning Gosney & Kallman’s Chinatown. Since relocating to the UK, she has lectured at Cambridge University, written a graphic novel, scripts for television, and articles for an array of online publications. She currently lives in London with her husband and dog.

A sexy story of the rise and fall of China's first burlesque nightclub By Ronald W Ritchey This is the behind the scenes story of a couple, Amelia Kallman and Norman Gosney, who created China's first burlesque nightclub. There are really three things that made this book so enjoyable for me. First, it provides a fascinating description of how these two people took a crazy idea of creating this cabaret across the planet to land in China, past all of the cultural and bureaucratic challenges to create one of the hottest clubs in the Shanghai, and ultimately how it all came apart. Next, Amelia's description of life in Shanghai really transports you to the city at that point in time. You really get a sense for the feel of the place from her descriptions of her experiences there. Last, it really drives home the reality of trying to do business in a corrupt environment. The Western world tends to take for granted a fair playing field, or at least the appearance of one. Learning the reality and the ridiculousness of how business is done over there was equal measures of frustration, humor, anger and sadness.

Amelia's first person narrative is witty and perceptive, breathlessly charming and intelligent. A consummate story teller, the details she weaves in of Shanghai are rich and relatable, making it easy to imagine the city and its inhabitants as she takes you on a roller coaster ride of triumph, loss, love, and betrayal. I fell in love with the cast of characters that accompany her and Norman in their quest to open a nightclub in China (and all the action packed drama that ensues).My favorite chapter is when she takes on Piers Morgan in a Vegas-style showgirl costume - it's hilarious.I hope she writes a follow up soon!
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Unbelievable story,a must read By constance flynn I loved this book, read it all once I started. It was a love story as well as full of the intrigue. Diary of a Shanghai Showgirl tells the story of how Amelia and Norman met, their idea for the cabaret and why they choose Shanghai, China to build their dream. Her personal diary captured all they went through as they battled their way through Communist bureaucracy to open the Shanghai Showgirl Cabaret as well all they loved about Shanghai. I highly recommend this book, it will be like nothing you have read before.
