Black-and-white photographs oozing with cool immortalize the performances and offstage lives of more than 100 famed jazz musicians who forged Blue Note Records’ legendary reputation. Blue Note Records—cofounded in 1939 by Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff—is dedicated to recording the greatest musicians in jazz history. Wolff’s photographs taken from 1948–69 catch the stars in action: performing onstage, in recording sessions, or cutting stylish silhouettes around town. This curated selection includes jazz greats Louis Armstrong, Art Blakey, Ornette Coleman, Chick Corea, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Dexter Gordon, Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, and many more. Each photograph is identified by subject, session or album being cut, and date; and the featured artists are indexed for easy reference. The intimate and candid photographs—often used to illustrate the label’s iconic album covers—recount the label’s dazzling seventy-five-year saga.

Review "Blue Note is the greatest jazz label of them all, hence the numerous publications over the past twenty years. The thing, however, that distinguishes Francis Wolff’s photos from the images of two other great photographers — Herman Leonard and William Claxton — is that Wolff was always present in the Van Gelder studio when all these classic albums were being rehearsed and recorded. He truly captured the gestalt and essence of what makes Blue Note great."-KCRW RHYTHM PLANET BLOG"A dazzling selection of more than 101 photos of jazz musicians taken between 1948 and 1969 by the co-founder of the Blue Note record label." -THE SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE

About the Author Michael Cuscuna is a jazz musician and producer and a music journalist. Francis Wolff’s heir, he has managed Blue Note Records since 1984. Francis Wolff, photographer and producer, cofounded Blue Note Records; many of the label’s albums feature his portraits.

By Stuart Jefferson This book has been around for a while but I was looking at it again and I thought I'd say a few words about how great a book this is in case anyone is wondering about it. There are so many great b&w photos included here, picking out highlights is pretty impossible. The large format of the book and the matte finish of the paperstock really do justice to these photographs. Even though a number of them are spread across the gutter of the book they still convey that whole atmospheric Blue Note feel and the sound of all those many classic sessions. If you're a Blue Note fan no doubt you've seen many of these as album covers, but seeing all these great portraits by Francis Wolff in a nicely printed large format book is pretty cool.Just checking the book out again I noticed that the musician's names on pages 106-107 are reversed and some of the written information isn't exactly accurate. But those are small quibbles when stacked up against so many fine portraits. If you already own the books dedicated to the Blue Note label (album covers/anniversary history/biography/etc.) and you don't own this large tome, you're missing a fine look at many of the musicians who helped make that "Blue Note sound" that jazz fans (like me) find so compelling. If you have a few extra dollars in your jeans you could do much worse than spend it on this fine book. This is a good addition to any jazz fan's shelf of jazz books.

Outstanding By Modal Bop One of several Blue Note Francis Wolff photography books, I feel this along with the larger coffee table book are the two essential ones for the Blue Note fan. Plenty of photographs that are unique to each book. The overall quality is excellent and it is bound in thick cardboard.

Liszt Terrific photo book with an interesting introductory essay about the German immigre founders of Blue Note Records. It's a moving experience to put faces to the names of musicians we know from record liner notes. Compare how these guys dressed (and smoked!) -- for rehearsals and recording sessions, yet -- with the schlumps who throw on any old clothes to play our clubs now.
