In his latest book, Jeffrey Bilhuber distills thirty years of expertise and creative inspiration designing beautiful and brilliantly modern rooms. Presenting a diverse range of decorator’s most recent and important work from around the country, the book is centered around 30 signature statements by Bilhuber—pithy and insightful bedrock principles and axioms that have fueled designer’s process. Rounding out these statements Sara Ruffin Costello, the highly regarded writer and editor, sheds light on Bilhuber’s inimitable style through charming anecdotes and bright, rich descriptions, revealing a decorator at the top of his profession. Anchoring the ideas that drive each project, the statements represent different angles from which to appreciate the decorator’s vision and mastery of his craft. Some are broad and philosophical: “What’s liberating is to be fearless”  and “Modernity is not about a new material, it’s about how you navigate your way through the world.”And others, specific and practical:“It’s easy to get white wrong. It takes talent to get it right” and “It’s powerfully important to sit at the table and talk to each other.” Capturing the breadth and beauty of Bilhuber’s work in city townhouses and rambling country houses throughout the country in New York City, Palm Beach, Aspen, and San Francisco, each project reveals itself to be a standard-bearer of great style, reflecting the decorator’s optimistic and classically informed point of view.

Review "There is an irresistible American harmony in [Bilhuber's] creations. It takes a fine eye to gather loud contemporary furniture with quietly thoughtful antique pieces, flirty prints with playful needlepoint, the perfectly preserved with the well-loved and well-used. The resulting rooms have a convivial atmosphere, where furnishings converse and welcome carefully chosen newcomers. . . No party happens twice, and each Bilhuber room is a one-off, client wishes filtered through his fertile imagination, an understanding of modern lifestyles the driving force behind every decision."-ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST"Designer Jeffrey Bilhuber feels his client is critical to a room's success and its staying power. In Bilhuber's own rooms, his genius is evident. His hand is in everything. Circling back to his maxim: 'It's liberating to be fearless,' his rooms are certainly that and never so evident as in his New York apartment with its Gilded Age elegance, belle Epoque glamour, Victorian sentiment, and present day precision, all evoking the catalysts Bilhuber adores, and masters." -LITTLE AUGURY BLOG"It's not very common that decorating books actually motivate you to read. However, this book is a stunning exception. . . Bilhuber is an amazing decorator, and his effusive designs are incredibly welcoming. . . I'll be keeping [Jeffrey Bilhuber: American Master] close at hand for design inspiration. What could be better than a book that galvanizes your creative spirit?"-MarthaStewart.com"The title couldn't be a better moniker, as Bilhuber truly is an American Master, creating remarkable, seemingly effortless, timeless interiors for over 30-years . . . [Jeffrey Bilhuber: American Master] features eight homes from around the country . . .  From large Manhattan townhouses, to rambling country houses, to compact apartments off Park Avenue, the rooms all have Jeffrey's unmistakable finishing touch."- NiagaraNovice Blog"When looking for decorating books to inspire, or even to assemble on the tabletops of our enthusiastic decorating friends and clients, we’re sure to include a book by Jeffrey Bilhuber. He is a master of assembling daring color combinations. His latest book, American Master, has just been published by Rizzoli, and we suggest you add it to your collection A.S.A.P!"-McGrath II Blog"[Jeffrey Bilhuber] invites us on a tour of some of his most stunning projects, ranging from New York City and Palm Beach to Aspen, and San Francisco. From city townhouses and country homes to a Federalist stone home and Bilhuber’s own Manhattan apartment and Locust Valley residence known as “Hay Fever”, this collection shows his diversity, as well as his genius with color combinations (e.g. blue cornicing with fuchsia wallpaper), show stopping curtains and layers of pattern."-TheTravelMemo.com

I adore his work. That said, his ego has gone overboard in this work. I read whatever I can about and by him, but his pronouncements about his mastery at the "top of (his) game" become a bit trying in this latest volume. Still, he is learned, imaginative, a definite one-off, and I still want to have dinner with him. 4.5 stars. So, I decided to add a few notes about this book. Like a couple of Bilhuber's other books, this one is instructive in successful, unexpected color and period combinations and is full of other decorating surprises besides. Bilhuber challenges convention. His projects are gargantuan. One features moving a huge skylight from the second to the third floor of a building. He is bold. Most would not have the nerve to cut down an antique area rug so that it could function as a wall-to-wall in a smaller space. Nothing is too sacred. Despite his obvious research and reverence for beauty and period detail, he adds witty notes and fun to his extravagant projects. Still, I think he is risking trying too hard to out do his prior achievements and letting his ego run amok.

Keefer If you have been tapping your fingers wondering what Jeffrey Bilhuber has been up to lately regarding decorating, you don't have to wait any longer. Oh - there have been teasers of his Hay Fever home - my favorite - on One King's Lane, and the NYSD just visited his New York City home, but there's never enough images to satiate. This book should help to satisfy Bilhuber fans as it has recent projects with brilliant narration by Sara Ruffin Costello and captivating photos by William Abranowicz. In my review of Bilhuber's last book, I was wishing his Hay Fever country home was featured in it - so was delighted to see it included in this book which makes it a 5 star read for me. Have you found that your favorite rooms of designers are in their own homes? It is one of my favorite homes of all time. Would actually like to see a separate book just of Bilhuber's homes with photos of the rooms from every corner and all the vignettes. Every once in a while you see a home and you realize you could move into it and not change a thing - it speaks home to you. That's how this home feels to me. I tell class members in my design classes to start collecting rooms which feel that way to them, as they offer clues to their signature style. To find a whole house which feels that way is a treasure. There's a variety of projects in this book from vibrant high voltage rooms to subtly neutral rooms. It is fun to see one talent expressed in a variety of homes. Here's a sampling of the range of projects in the book which include some of the following elements of style:* Palm Beach home with a Moroccan feel - there's corner banquettes, tables with tassels, green Moroccan fretwork, hand-painted paisley, lilac leopard print chair, thick bullion fringe trim on a divan and hand-blocked Indian prints.* Bilhuber's Manhattan apartment - it "references the gilded age" 1868-1900. There's a peacock called George, gold fillet around the drawing room ceiling, a Belle Epoque suite of furniture with original gros-point needlework and damask, Directoire sconces, pagoda lamp shade, Mauny French 19th century block print wallpaper, baize covered dining table, noir needle point armchair, crimson wool velvet carpet, course linen hopsacking drape, arabesque John Henry Belter armchair, and de Gournay wallpaper with gold in Bilhuber's bedroom.* Sybaritic Manhattan townhome - lacquered yellow walls with mural, yellow leather bergeres, Spanish 1930's carpet, Louis Seize banquettes made to order, gimp strapwork on seams of 19th century flocked wallpaper in bedroom, milk glass lamp, Josef Hoffman Viennese chair, apple green liner in a bed's corona, abalone chair, Maison Jansen writing desk, and a Coromondel screen transformed to a closet.* Stone Federalist house near Kent, Connecticut - 5 foot wide tufted ottoman, 1930's parchment waterfall table, demilune banquette, and lacquered red shirts as art installation.* Elizabethan house in San Francisco - top floor decoration with rooms reached by pull down ladder. Bilhuber wanted to build on San Francisco's historically explored designer inventiveness with the likes of Tony Duquette, John Dickinson and Michael Taylor. Fuschia damask fabric on walls balance cheetah carpet underfoot. Victorian hooded wing chair, Motherwell graphic inspired wallpaper, Persian stained glass, malachite resin console table, magenta corduroy ottoman, 1980 style mirrored mosaic on bathroom walls, and made-to-order Tillett canvas in guest room with egg yellow lining on bed coronet. And an amazing skylight.Bilhuber's Masterpiece Hay Fever home - foundation from 1600's and home emulates Mount Vernon, George Washington's home. Wallpaper print from GONE WITH THE WIND movie re-created by John Knott at Quadrille in foyer, apple green sitting room with chintz prints and striped cotton, French blue decorative trim on walls, 19th century Henry Northey Hooper girandole candlesticks, column of silhouettes on wall, "grandly florid 1940's hooked round rug", lacquered paper mache deer head tropies, shed anters, French glass, mirrors placed around and above doorways, waist high banking table in library, hand-woven Scottish ingrain carpet, sumptuous red linen canopy bed with Puritan white lining, 1842 print of THE SENATE CHAMBER over fireplace in Bilhuber's stunning red bedroom which you can look at forever drinking in its je ne sais quoi. Yes, this home definitely needs its own book. Can we pre-order now?Throughout the book are Bilhuber's design insights which are always enlightening and provocative. "30 pithy statements" by Bilhuber anchor the book. Here's one: "Everything must register on one level or another. That's what details are for."If you enjoy Bilhuber's genius, you should find something in this book to delight you. I did.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Takes me back By Dave M I originally was excited about this book just because it was set in the same area where i grew up and i bumped into Des every now and again in Netherton, I seem to remember Des always wearing a football strip for some reason, anyway, back to the book. The book itself is clearly unedited or proof read due to the obvious missed words and some spelling errors which I'm sure Kindles formatting and publishing has something to do with, however, the story makes up for that in a big way; well defined and lovable characters, interesting plots, twists, turns and cliffhangers made me want to read it in one go. The only disappointment you'll have is there's not a book two waiting to greet you on it's completion. I wish everyone who reads Life is Local could have experienced Wishaw, Motherwell and Hamilton as i did when i was younger to fully appreciate the meaning of the story and reality it was to live and grow up in this area. Can't wait to read more of your stuff Des, get scribbling!

Best Ebook PDF Roughing It, by Mark Twain

Roughing It follows the travels of young Mark Twain through the Wild West during the years 1861–1867. After a brief stint as a Confederate cavalry militiaman, he joined his brother Orion Clemens, who had been appointed Secretary of the Nevada Territory, on a stagecoach journey west. Twain consulted his brother's diary to refresh his memory and borrowed heavily from his active imagination for many stories in the novel. Roughing It illustrates many of Twain's early adventures, including a visit to Salt Lake City, gold and silver prospecting, real-estate speculation, and his beginnings as a writer. In this memoir, readers can see examples of Twain's rough-hewn humor, which would become a staple of his writing in his later books, such as Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court.

Roughing It, by Mark Twain

Amazon.com Review There is no nicer surprise for a reader than to discover that an acknowledged classic really does deliver the goods. Mark Twain's Roughing It is just such a book. The adventure tale is a delight from start to finish and is just as engrossing today as it was 125 years ago when it first appeared.

Roughing It tells the true-ish escapades of Twain in the American West. Although he clearly "speaks with forked tongue," Roughing It is informative as well as humorous. From stagecoach travel to the etiquette of prospecting, the modern reader gains considerable insight into that much-fictionalized time and place. Do you know about sagebrush, for example? Sage-brush is very fair fuel, but as a vegetable it is a distinguished failure. Nothing can abide the taste of it but the jackass and his illegitimate child, the mule. But their testimony to its nutritiousness is worth nothing, for they will eat pine knots, or anthracite coal, or brass filings, or lead pipe, or old bottles, or anything that comes handy, and then go off looking as grateful as if they had had oysters for dinner. Roughing It is informally structured around the narrator's attempts to strike it rich. He meets a motley, colorful crew in the process; many mishaps occur, and it shouldn't surprise you that Twain does not emerge a man of means. But he withstands it all in such a relentless good humor that his misfortune inspires laughter. Roughing It is wonderful entertainment and reminds you how funny the world can be--even its grimmer districts--when you're traveling with the right writer.

From Library Journal In this 1872, Twain reminisces about his five years of roaming around the country from 1861 to 1866. This edition contains the complete original text plus the original illustrations. Though pricey, this volume should be considered for collections specializing in Twain.Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review ''Describes, in dramatic incidents, the people he met, from desperadoes to Brigham Young.'' --The Reader's Encyclopedia ''A vigorous, many-sided portrait of the Western frontier.'' --The Concise Oxford Companion to American Literature''This humorous travel book . . . is full of colorful caricatures of outlandish locals and detailed sketches of frontier life.'' --Merriam-Webster's Encyclopedia of Literature''There is no nicer surprise for a reader than to discover that an acknowledged classic really does deliver the goods. Mark Twain's Roughing It is just such a book. 58 of 60 people found the following review helpful. A fun read, and some history too By Matthew Taylor The genius of Mark Twain is that his work is still enjoyable, and funny, to this day. This book, originally published in 1871, is Twain's account of his journey from Missouri to Hawaii (called the Sandwich Islands in his day). He tells story after story of his adventures along the way, starting with the stagecoach ride on the Overland Stage Line to Carson City, Nevada, around 1861, and then telling of his stay in Nevada, then California, then his visit to Hawaii. The stories are informative, humorous, and all-around entertaining. He lampoons everybody he can--nobody is safe--including miners, pioneers (emigrants), politicians, Mormons, Blacks, American Indians, Chinese, newspaper reporters, "desperados", even himself on more than one occasion. Sometimes his stories are so outrageous that you wonder how much is true and how much is embellishment, or just outright fiction. Even he understands this by telling the reader on occasion that he has not made up a particular story, to demonstrate that truth is often stranger than fiction, but also to imply that he has taken liberties in other places in the book. (I wonder if the Mormon Church has ever banned this book for the things he says about them.) Even while he is being irreverent, however, he often demonstrates a sensitivity toward people, with an awareness of the situation of others that seems to me to be ahead of his time. For example, he has a chapter on the immigrant Chinese population in the West, and while he pokes fun at them in some respects, he spends the time detailing their lives and culture, as much as he could understand it, with a respect that was uncommon in his day.I bought a copy of this book years ago because I am a native Californian, and knew that there was some material in here about California in the early days (my copy is an old hardcover published by Grosset and Dunlap). As Twain states in his Prefatory: "...There is quite a good deal of information in this book. I regret this very much, but really it could not be helped." I enjoyed reading about the "old West" from an eye-witness, although most of it deals with Nevada, not California. While some of it sounded familiar, like something from any Western-genre movie, other things were like nothing I had ever heard of before, describing the "Wild West" from an original point of view. In that respect, this book is a great resource. This book falls short of five stars due to some minor flaws. He often digresses with text that is not only marginal to the point, but not even written by him, reprinting someone else's text. I skipped over some of that. He would also spend pages detailing coversations between other people that he could not have possibly remembered verbatim. While I understand that it was a common writing style of his day, it sounds like bad jounalism today. Those complaints aside, this is some great writing by Twain and some valuable American history.

37 of 39 people found the following review helpful. ROUGHING IT By Movie Explorer This "Mark Twain Project" paperback edition of ROUGHING IT is by far the best version for most readers. It is an excellent value. The 200 pages of "Explanatory Notes" at the end, add greatly to the modern reader's understanding of the 1860's "Wild West". The Early Western Mining Frontier comes vividly and colorfully to life, thanks to the Explanatory Notes' full illumination of the fascinating, often hilarious, eyewitness account of young Sam Clemens. The 21st century reader now sees the momentous impact of Samuel Colt's "Navy Revolver" on frontier society, fully comprehends a "Stamp Mill's" importance to the silver mines of the Comstock Lode, and is in complete agreement about the "thoroughbrace's" necessity to the Overland Stage traveler's comfort! This edition also contains all 304 first edition illustrations, another great aid allowing the modern reader to take a virtual walk into a vanished time.In the "Foreword" to this edition, Editor Harriet Elinor Smith notes, " The vernacular style of ROUGHING IT often seems surprisingly fresh to modern readers.....". I'm betting that many readers, younger ones especially, may approach this book with dread, only to become immersed in the rollicking adventure, and reach the end of ROUGHING IT with regret. The readers who return for a second, third or more reading, will discover many levels of depth to ROUGHING IT that will continue to entertain and educate reading after reading, year after year. From the "Foreword" to this edition, Editor Smith also observes, "Although readers have long been entertained by ROUGHING IT, it has gradually become part of all serious study of American culture. Students of history have come to rely on it for accurate information about the period, and it has played a major role in shaping the myth of the "Wild West".......No examination of American popular culture would be complete without Mark Twain's imaginative reminiscence of what it was like to be "on the ground in person"".So, if you are tired of all this bickering between the North and South, and feel it may be healthier to get away from the tensions, I hear tell there's a great silver strike in a new territory called "Nevada", near a place called "Virginia City". It's July 1861 and there is an Overland Stage westbound, St Joseph, Missouri to Carson City, Nevada Territory.Buckle on your Navy Colt and climb aboard!

He spins his tales, weaves his lies, and draws us in with the skill of a magician. Dividing fact from fiction is not always easy in a work such as this. "Roughing It" has moments of obvious hyperbole, grounded by stories of true difficulty. Yet throughout, Twain finds a way to make us smile, even laugh out loud. We are amused by the eccentric characters and turns of events which he describe, and find that we are not so far different as we might like to think. The story follows Twain's journey as he travels west by stagecoach, train, wagon, horse, and ship. He meets surly frontiersmen, murderers, thieves, fortune-hunters, and men of ill-repute. Even here, he finds the good beneath the dirt. I especially enjoyed his anecdote of Scotty Briggs, a man trying to hire a minister to attend over his friend's funeral. Hilarious stuff! And so true to human nature.Throughout his account, Twain makes a habit of degrading his own work ethic, nudging us in the ribs as he highlights his aversion to labor. With this in mind, the title seems to be a tongue-in-cheek affair. In fact, I found his accounts much less rustic and more modern than expected. Sure, we can travel across the U.S. quicker these days, but the politics and economics of Twain's age parallel our own. Will we never learn? Isn't this the point of history, to avoid repeating our errors?Although criticized in his day for using coarse language and a working-class, Twain held to his guns and gave us some magnificent humor with which to swallow his pointed barbs. He was a master satirist, and even in a travelogue such as this, his views shine through. And thank goodness! A century and a half later, I'm thankful for his insights.

By Anne Marie How great it is to download a play to Kindle, then have the text handy for the long flight to France! As preparation for a performance at the Comédie Française did just that, and the text was free besides. Advantageous to read a play beforehand so as to enjoy fully the action onstage and indeed to anticipate its important points. Same goes for Amphitryon, seldom performed, which fortunately was playing when I was there.

Taxil starts with a confession of what he believes and then writes the book in that mind. Whether you believe in the first, the second or the third hypothesis, it's an interesting read (although if you believe in the first, it might be more demanding of you).

In addition, it will likewise little make to offer the food to your mouth and also ingest it. Well, as checking out a publication Monster! #22: October 2015, By Tim Paxton, sometimes, if you ought to check out something for your new tasks, you will certainly feel so lightheaded of it. Once again, we mix things up a little…actually, a LOT! Some may well be wondering about that cute li’l red dragon/dino on the cover to this ish. To those “in the know” (including MONSTER! founder Tim Paxton), cartoonist Vernon Grant’s slim 1972 softcover comics volume A MONSTER IS LOOSE!—IN TOKYO marked a key point in the understanding and acceptance of Japanese “kaiju eiga” (basically, giant monster movies) here in the West. For this issue, dedicated pop-cultural paleontologist Stephen R. Bissette gives us Part 1 of his two-part personal testimonial to Grant, “the man who introduced ‘kaiju’ to America”, alighting on other aspects of monster/popular culture along the way. Elsewhere, the academically-studious-to-a-fault John L. Vellutini contributes a sequel to his epic article on Indonesian horror cinema, “The Ties That Bind” (which we ran in M! #21); this month John ties-up whatever loose ends of errata/addenda he has unearthed since last month. In addition, the mighty Eric Messina enthusiastically champions the cause of usual puppet master Gerry Anderson’s mid-’90s live-action sci-fi/crime hybrid SPACE PRECINCT, a critter-filled series which is generally – and in Eric’s considered opinion, unfairly – held in low esteem even by the staunchest adherents of Anderson’s canon. With similar enthusiasm, the ever-knowledgeable John Harrison covers a bunch of the more monsterific episodes of the cult ’60s pulp SF show, LOST IN SPACE. For the sake of something “different”, the seemingly tireless and super-prolific Troy Howarth conducts an entertaining interview with up’n’coming young indie/underground moviemaker Joshua Kennedy, whose latest SOV ventures are DRACULA A.D. 2015 and THE VESUVIUS XPERIMENT. Then there’s “How To Make a Monster”, the first instalment of fellow indie filmmaker Mike T. Lyddon’s on-set coverage of his upcoming D.I.Y. creature feature, FIRST MAN ON MARS. Also in this super-stuffed issue, freelance author Stephen D. Sullivan covers a number of the best podcasts out there pertaining to monster movies, while Matthew E. Banks takes a look at massive pop culture icon Bela Lugosi’s forays into vampire cinema, which came fewer and farther between than you might expect, considering his rep. Our larger-than-usual review section includes write-ups on such diverse filmic fare as KIDS VS MONSTERS (2015), DR. ORLOFF’S INVISIBLE MONSTER (1970), MEET THE APPLEGATES (1990), IT! (1967), HOUSE ON BARE MOUNTAIN (1962), FRANKENSTEIN: DAY OF THE BEAST (2011), the Mexi-monster masterpiece SHIP OF MONSTERS (1960), plus more besides. Oh, and Tim P. covers another clutch of ultra-obscure Hindi horrors, too! As always, in our back pages we provide video availability for many of the films covered herein. This issue’s list of contributors is rounded-out by Sebastien Godin, Keith J. Rainville, Andy Ross, Michael Hauss, Christos Mouroukis, Brian Harris and Steve Fenton.

By Fred Adelman Another great issue, although the cartoon dragon doesn't belong prominently displayed front & center on the cover. I know what you were going for, but a lot of other people won't and will just pass this issue by, thinking it's a graphic novel. Just a little constructive criticism, but the LOST IN SPACE card set (I own them) and the article that went with it were a prime example of why everyone should be reading this zine. Even the erratica section was informative! What the hell are you people waiting for?

I really enjoyed the article " A Monster is Loose!- in Tokyo" about the book by the same name by the late Vernon Grant, as well as other works by this cartoonist from Cambridge, MA. The cover of this issue is great, showcasing Vernon's Monster.

Rebel with a cause: A revolutionary spirit in modern art   Diego Rivera (1886–1957) is a loud presence on the art historical stage. With devout political principles and a turbulent romantic history, he was at once husband and paladin of Frida Kahlo, advocate and adversary of Stalin’s Soviet Union, and liberator and traitor of Leon Trotsky.Vibrant, graphic, and often monumental, Rivera’s paintings carry the same live political and passionate charge as his personal biography. Fusing European influences such as Cubism with a socialist ideology and an exaltation of Mexico’s indigenous and popular heritage, he created a new iconography for art history and for his country. He became one of the most important figures in the Mexican mural movement and won international acclaim for his public wall paintings, in which he presented a utopian yet accessible vision of a post-revolutionary Mexico. In 1931, Rivera was the subject of MoMA’s second ever monographic exhibition. This book explores the unique blend of influence and ideology which secure Rivera’s place as both a unique and a universal painter, bound to the particular turbulent experience of early 20th century Mexico, and yet preoccupied with subjects such as revolution and class inequity which continue to speak to us today.   About the Series:Each book in TASCHEN’s Basic Art series features:

  • a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical importance
  • a concise biography
  • approximately 100 illustrations with explanatory captions

Promise Heyward is a young black woman from Maryland’s infamous Prince George County, an only child to an early 70’s heroin dealer and his wife who was an aspiring writer. As an adolescent, Promise lost both of her parents to the dope game. She spent the remainder of her childhood living under the broken system known as foster care, only to learn just how lonely and complicated her life would be without her parents. As she became older, she evolved beautifully – a dine in the face with dangerous curves, and her sights were set on becoming successful. Given her beauty, coupled with the fact that she had a troubled past, she is definitely a diamond in the rough. After enrolling in college to pursue a career as an author, Promise soon becomes involved with a ruthless Baltimore gangster by the name of Murda. They have a son together named Zaire, Promise’s crown jewel. Murda is notorious in the drug trade, a rising kingpin. And his crime family has the streets of Baltimore under lock and key. Over time, Promise begins to realize that Murda’s material wealth and the luxurious lifestyle that she’s grown accustomed to are all that he has to offer her. All of the jewelry, cars and clothes are overshadowed by his lies, abuse, infidelity, material greed and neglect for her and Zaire. Finding herself entangled in Murda’s web of confusion, Promise finally decides to leave him. With the cards stacked against her, she is forced to struggle at first. That’s only until she meets a guy who fills that void in her heart, and shows her what true love really feels like. Murda eventually realizes that he has lost a good thing but, by then, it’s far too late. He can’t accept the fact that he’s been replaced and that another man is satisfying her. That’s when he starts doing any and everything he can think of to put an end to her fling…even it means that someone has to get hurt.

By Antonios Fountouris Since completing my studies in maths, I have always been considered a "math guy" and many people have asked me to recommend a really good practical math poker book. My answer has always been, "Sorry but this book doesn't exist."There are some "practical" math poker books on the market but they are not really practical. The way they represent their results is not the way a poker player thinks and calculates the odds at the table. Rather, these writers look like high school guys with no poker experience trying to do their homework and understand poker by writing down hundreds of fractions with a lot of them containing basic math mistakes and big poker mistakes! Buying those books is a waste of your time; you will learn nothing there. There are some great theoretical math poker books. Some of them are really very interesting but only from an academic mathematical perspective. They have nothing to teach you that you could apply directly. Others are written from a poker player’s perspective and contain some rules of thumb but take forever to read and you get lost among all the theoretical aspects and complex mathematical calculations. They can help you memorize what your probability is to hit your flush draw on the river when you call the ”All In” on the flop, but they can’t teach you to estimate rapidly (while playing) your hand's odds versus a range after a flop shove, when it is correct to fold a set or nut flush draw on the flop or how to make correct decisions in hard situations on the turn. Most of all these books are really boring and hard to read. But now a really good practical and exciting poker math book , a book that makes it very easy to learn , enjoy and love to study and increase your poker profits , finally exists. Written by a very experienced poker player and poker coach, the unique quizzes and exercises in Poker Work Book for Math Geeks help you to practice away from the tables and improves your mental ability to make fast, math-based decisions by memorizing only a few numbers and rules of thumb, like the most successful professional players do .

Having loved Doug's last book (Poker Plays You Can Use), I gave this a shot. Even though I'm not math-inclined, I found it to be the perfect fit given that fact.Despite the title, this book is not just for math geeks. It's actually the perfect book for non-math geeks who have struggled to get better at the math side of poker. It succeeds because of the copious amounts of examples/exercises, and the sheer thoroughness of the coverage. Look at the table of contents -- this book covers pretty much every situation in poker where serious value is on the line, and being able to run a little math in your head will unquestionably improve your play. The concepts in this book could easily be overwhelming if not for Doug's no-frills, straightforward presentation. It really does have a workbook feel, and that was another huge plus for me. I'm sure some math geeks will sit with this like a Sudoku, I can only take math in bite-sized pieces. Like Doug's previous book, you can pretty much pick it up anywhere, do a chapter, and then walk away feeling like a better poker player.Has this book transformed my game? It's probably too soon to tell, but I certainly feel an evolution taking place. I'm thinking about the math in spots where I'd normally be going with my gut, even if I'm not able to formulate the equations in my head quite yet. And the book has dispelled a lot of myths around situations where the edge seems bigger than it really is.I would imagine that a true math geek could read this book and move up a level immediately. For a non-math guy like me, I'm just happy to have some of the mathematical thinking rub off on my game.

The most comprehensive, well organized, and useful book about poker math that I have seen By b warren Poker workbook for math geeks exactly what I have been looking for! Poker math is not new to me. Just like anyone else I can go online and easily find formulas for calculating pot odds and break-even percentages. However, this doesn’t make it easy to use this math in an efficient way to make profitable decisions at the table.Doug Hull has written an engaging book that makes poker math accessible to everyone. The instruction is clear and well organized and his conversational writing style makes the material a lot more entertaining than a typical math discussion normally is. The lessons follow a logical order, beginning with pre-flop equities and then moving on to more complex concepts that occur as hands play out. What makes this book especially different is that each lesson includes corresponding problems and exercises that reinforce what you are learning in a way that just reading about it can never do. All of the solutions are provided in the back of the book, as well as other help with recommended poker software.Lastly there is a section titled “Real Hand” examples which pulls together all of the individual types of problems you encounter throughout the book. This gives them context, providing a framework of how to analyze a hand completely. Thanks Doug!

The author focuses mainly on floral patterns, but the 'botanical' tag is not representative of everything that this book includes. The author also incorporates more block lettering, and the idea of positive and negative space. Also included are blank pages, as well as pages with borders, which the hand letterer (you) are encouraged to play in. I appreciated that the author encouraged constant and focused practice in order to get better, and overall the ideas and suggestions provided were good. My one hitch with this book, is that it may be a little short/basic for those who are really into hand -lettering, but it seems perfect for a beginner or someone interested specifically in plant or plant influenced designs.

I am so glad that coloring books are all the rage these days because it really is a great way to let go of stress. This hand lettering workbook is fantastic! Learning the basics of how to start a drawing is essential to anyone with an itch to paint or draw and this is a great way to learn. It really helps you learn to draw from beginning to end. The practice pages were so fun and in some cases funny [ originals where definitely better then my attempt at them ]. This book was an absolute blast! Learning to do a variety of different things from plants to letters was just such a blast. Stop and smell the roses.

She wanted every letter to be perfect. I love this book because it’s free form calligraphy with embellishments. I copied a couple of the designs and got my confidence up and started expanding on her designs and then started creating my own designs. This book is a great way to get your creative juices going. What a great personalized gift if you had the time to create a weekly planner, calendar or note cards. Though it’s not in color, I can only imagine how the author would do it. The next step for me is color.

Much Ado About Nothing is a comedic play by William Shakespeare thought to have been written in 1598 and 1599, as Shakespeare was approaching the middle of his career. The play was included in the First Folio, published in 1623. Much Ado About Nothing is generally considered one of Shakespeare's best comedies, because it combines elements of robust hilarity with more serious meditations on honour, shame, and court politics.

Much Ado About Nothing (Illustrated), by William Shakespeare

From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. Shakespeare's legendary tragedy is revisited in this spirited and entertaining production that ran in London from November 2007 to February 2008. The flawless, talented cast features Ewan McGregor as the conniving Iago, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Othello (whose performance won him the Olivier Award as best actor) and Kelly Reilly as Desdemona. There is also excellent support from Tom Hiddleston (as Cassio) and Michelle Fairley (as Emilia). This audio production is a rousing, theatrical performance expertly guided by director Michael Grandage. Complete with a musical score as well as full sound effects and background noises, listening is so enjoyable that the play speeds by at breakneck pace. An enclosed booklet contains color photographs of the production and a well-written essay by drama professor Russell Jackson. There's also an entertaining bonus DVD disc featuring interviews with the cast and crew. Brilliantly produced in all departments, listening is the next best thing to seeing it live. From School Library Journal

Gr 10 Up-Naxos AudioBooks' top-drawer Classic Drama Series blissfully continues with this exquisite rendition of Othello starring Hugh Quarshie, Anton Lesser, Emma Fielding, and a full cast of professional English actors with extensive credits in the Royal National Theatre, BBC Radio Drama Company, and the Royal Shakespeare Company. Shakespeare's most domestic tragedy is an exceedingly complex journey through jealousy, self-doubt, inadequacies, and societal acceptance. Passed over for military promotion, Iago, perhaps Shakespeare's most nefarious character, manipulates Othello's downfall, culminating in the murder of his beloved wife, Desdemona, and Othello's subsequent suicide. Under David Timson's stewardship as director, the story is beautifully and simply told, embellished only with intermittent brassy flourishes of classical music and a dramatic echo effect and throbbing heart beat to underscore Othello's chaotic descent and rage. While the entire cast is excellent, the trio of Quarshie (Othello), Lesser (Iago), and Fielding (Desdemona) are outstanding. An outline of each individual cassette, complete synopsis, full notes regarding the text, and cast biographies are included in a compact 24-page supplemental booklet. For all collections.-Barry X. Miller, Austin Public Library, TX

From Booklist This impressive audio is a version of a London theatrical performance featuring McGregor as Iago, Chiwetel Ejiofor in the role of Othello, and Kelly Reilly playing Desdemona. In a studio recording session, the actors “reproduced as closely as possible the stage production.” Authentic sound effects and background music further enhance the presentation. Experiencing a play aurally is different than viewing a stage performance, and sometimes it is difficult to distinguish between the voices in the predominantly male cast. Nevertheless, this is an excellent vehicle for introducing the classic tragedy to students and Shakespeare fans. An accompanying DVD includes interviews with cast members. Their discussions of the characters, analyses of motivations, and decisions on delivering lines are thoughtfully presented. These fascinating commentaries add immeasurably to listeners’ comprehension of the play and the acting process. --Barbara Baskin

26 of 29 people found the following review helpful. An excellent book! By Megan I was assigned to read "Much Ado About Nothing" for my block class, and my initial thought was, Oh, how boring. I don't want to read Shakespeare. I won't even be able to understand it. Let me tell you, I was very wrong! This book was excellent- one of the best I've ever read. It contained romance, humor, comedy, and drama- so many diverse qualities that I rarely find in books these days! The main characters, Beatrice and Benedick, add humor and warmth to the book. They argue and insult each other, yet they are really in love. Hero and Claudio are the lovebirds, but the evil Don John tries to get in the way of this with a deceitful plan. Even though this book was written centuries ago, the main themes still apply to today, (such as the Beatrice and Benedick theme). That is why this book is a classic. Oh, and understanding it isn't a problem, either. This was my first Shakespeare book ever (I'm only 14), and I understood the plot, characters, and the theme. I enjoyed it at the same time. So order this book today. You won't regret it!

By Brianna Rhywhen I am here to do my part in diminishing the value of all the one- and three- star reviews posted here, the authors of which are clearly the same person or all from the same class of children too young to read the play. Amazon visitors reading these should know two things: the reviewer is a twit, and this play is wonderful.I, for one, am a sucker for romances; if you are, Beatrice and Benedick will make the play worthwhile. Predictability be damned, they were an adorable couple. The main couple, Hero and Claudio, are boring; the other one will make you swoon. Beatrice and Benedick are funny, clever, and stubbornly reluctant to admit they love each other. To wit, they're perfect for one another.I have read two contradictory criticisms regarding the language in the play on Amazon: that the language is too simple for Shakespeare's standards, and that the language is too difficult. The latter was from the kid's reviews; for everyone else, the language is not so difficult to decipher that you need to avoid it. The Folger edition, at least, has one page of notes for every page of text, noting both puzzling references to Elizabethan beliefs, such as that sights draw blood from the heart, and language problems caused by the hundreds of years between Shakespeare's time and ours. The editors do all the work for you. You have no excuse. (Oh, and that the language is too simple: Bah. It's Shakespeare. That's impossible. I loved all the double entendres; this play was very witty.)One criticism I somewhat agree with is that the plot is boring. Hero and Claudio, being the main couple, get much time, and I didn't care much about Don John's vengeance, but at least half of my favorite couple was usually present, and by no means do Hero and Claudio's plot monopolize the story. Much Ado About Nothing is often genuinely entertaining, which is what kept me interested. The plot's not the point here, it's the dialogue. In sum, the language is poetic, but not so much so that it reads like Klingon, the romance will make you sigh, and the plot is at least good enough to keep Beatrice or Benedick in most of the time. Don't let the previous reviewers deter you: Read it.

Unusable and Eclectic Ideas Ruin this Important Edition By Desertmartin Claire McEachern's Introduction, notes and commentary on Much Ado About Nothing suffer from the decline in real scholarship over the last few years. Previous introductory materials in Arden edition have always built on the solid scholarship of the past, adding new ideas and research as integrated parts of the growing body of knowledge associated with Shakespeare scholarship. McEachern's abandons most of the valid accepted readings of this play to wander rather aimlessly down the tunnel of self-promoting feminist, postmodern eclecticism. As a college professor, I am dismayed to see Arden turn to such contemporary and popular approaches at the exclusion of real context. The Arden editions have always set the standard, but are now falling prey to the subjective, personalized, even vindictive vents of the academic few. The field of Shakespeare criticism, unfortunately, is in danger of collapsing in on itself, and becoming completely irrelevant to anything other than these marginalized interest. More specifically, McEachern's search for sources for the play becomes a labyrinthine exposé of speculative inference and unrelated texts, ignoring primary sources for a new historicist fascination with the obscure. The tenor of her subjective argument about the play is captured in her overdone attack on Benedick as misogynist and Beatrice's rendering as the shrew. The problem, obviously, is the imbalance here; the feminist objective reduces a complex and humorous interplay to victimizer and victim, both seen from one perspective. Ignoring the historical contexts of the play, she focuses instead on marginal texts that only partially relate to the central themes of the play, to the social context, and to the audience's understanding both of Shakespeare's environs and present-day concerns. McEachern eventually backs herself into ridiculous corners, such as pages of arguing how women of the period who were too talkative (such as Beatrice) were labeled promiscuous, only to concede that Beatrice is never so labeled or even considered such. Her complete overblown fascination with the few humorous "cuckold" references in the play channel her criticism into a reductive and extremely limited analysis of minor factors in the play, while she completely avoids the important social considerations of marriage, challenges to gender roles, and the place of female intelligence in Shakespeare's society. It is a sign of the worst kind of scholarship, that her introduction to Much Ado About Nothing runs to nearly 145 pages, once the length of only the Hamlet introduction among the Arden editions (the only play, because of its complexity, demanding such a lengthy explication). Ego gets the better of scholarship here, and buries the important and necessary social, political and cultural ideas associated with this play. If McEachern's editing and commentary is a sign of things to come from Arden, they can expect to lose readers on all levels who find such marginalized approaches to important scholarship outside the interest of students and professionals alike.
