This book is really about human activities from ancient to modern times told through the lens of man's basic drive to limit risk. In this wide-ranging book the author ventures into a variety of topics such as the invention of money, the Gregorian and Julian calendars, and the Great Fire of London. The writing can be pretty corny. The author is willing to go out on a limb for a laugh, with mixed results. I forgive that. Mostly, the humor adds rather than detracts. So I give the book five stars because who would have thought that a book about insurance could be funny and interesting.
