Seventy years after the nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan is still dealing with the effects of the bombings on the national psyche. From the Occupation Period to the present, Japanese cinema had offered a means of coming to terms with one of the most controversial events of the 20th century. From the monster movies Gojira (1954) and Mothra (1961) to experimental works like Go Shibata's NN-891102 (1999), atomic bomb imagery features in all genres of Japanese film.
This collection of new essays explores the cultural aftermath of the bombings and its expression in Japanese cinema. The contributors take on a number of complex issues, including the suffering of the survivors (hibakusha), the fear of future holocausts and the danger of nuclear warfare. Exclusive interviews with Go Shibata and critically acclaimed directors Roger Spottiswoode (Hiroshima) and Steven Okazaki (White Light/Black Rain) are included.

And I especially loved the first chapter about Gojira by Shannon Stevens. Scholarly and yet accessible. It was so interesting. It's a hymn to how humans use the arts to ease their pain. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in cinema, the use of the atomic bomb and Gojira -- Japanese for Godzilla. Excellent!!!

By Dr Fogs A fantastic and thoroughly interesting read on Japanese cinema. A real page turner as the book introduces and explains Japan's film influences from the 1945 atomic bomb attacks.Matthew Edwards essays really capture that 70 years on from the nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan is still very much dealing with the cultural aftermath of the bombings within their national psyche. This fantastic book discusses these influences from some of my personal favourites of Japanese cinema such as Gojira and Mothra. However also introduces more unknown but thoroughly interesting work such as Go Shibata’s NN-891102, which demonstrates the direction the atomic bombs in Japan has taken some of her directors.I particularly enjoyed how this book took such a complex issue of the atomic bomb and respectfully included interviews with survivors of the attacks, as well as Japanese Cinema director greats like Roger Spottiswoode. This book is a must for anyone studying or researching Japanese Cinema or simply for someone who is just interested in such a fascinating subject on the 70th anniversary of the bombings. Can't recommend enough, don't delay, buy your copy today.
