(Book). Kickstart My Heart: A Motley Crue Day-by-Day is an exciting chronology that celebrates in innovative form through the use of day-by-day entries and supporting band quotes mostly collected firsthand by the author, as well as memorabilia shots and photography the crazy lives lived by Vince, Mick, Nikki, and Tommy at the booze-drenched apex of the rock-'n'-roll food chain. Augmented with entries that help place the band in a wider rock context, Popoff presents a swift-moving, action-packed symphony of text and visuals that reprises his collaboration with Backbeat on similarly structured titles about Iron Maiden and Ozzy Osbourne. With very few Motley Crue-related books on the market, Kickstart My Heart will likely serve for years to come as the most complete and completely party-hardy celebration of this band now 35 years on and in the midst of completing its final tour ever.

Review ''This style of book makes for an easy read that you can dip in and out of; Popoff's essay on each decade of the Motley Crue's thirty-five year career contains his views on the music highs and lows. This is not just a fan's over enthusiastic view of a band but more a discerning professional view on an influential but slightly inconsistent band.'' --Fireworks Magazine

A highly detailed trip down memory lane By Aaron Small There’s no denying that Mötley Crüe’s The Dirt, published in 2001, is one of the greatest rock autobiographies ever. New Year’s Eve, 2015 marked the last and final Crüe show; the band is done. To celebrate the unbelievable 34-year career of Tommy Lee, Mick Mars, Vince Neil, and Nikki Sixx – as well as a few other members along the way, including John Corabi – BraveWords senior writer (and proficient author) Martin Popoff has published the third volume in his coveted Day-By-Day series (the first two being Iron Maiden and Ozzy Osbourne). Upon first glance, given the incredible number of photographs found within Kickstart My Heart – some familiar, some rarely seen – this book is more appealing to a Mötley fan than the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue is to a pimply-faced teenage boy. At 244 pages in length, there’s a lot for your inner Dr. Feelgood to dissect, yet it’s easy to examine given the superb layout. Furthering Popoff’s own interviews with Mötley is borrowed text from magazines and websites (all duly credited) to supplement the story. In addition to all the well-documented triumphs and tragedies, a few lesser known tidbits are revealed throughout. For example, guitarist Jake E. Lee admits, “there was talk of me being in Mötley Crüe, either replacing Mick or being a second guitarist.” Dave Mustaine of Megadeth reminisces about touring with The Crüe, “they were enormous… we agreed because it’s very similar to the Guns N’ Roses / Metallica package.” While outsiders add insight, there’s no shortage of quotes straight from the guys themselves, like this gem from Vince; if it wasn’t for Mötley, “I’d be one of those guys in Hawaii that rents you jet skis.” And the side-projects (Brides Of Destruction, Methods Of Mayhem, Rockstar Supernova, Sixx:A.M.) are all lovingly covered as well. Finding fault with Kickstart My Heart is like searching for a needle in a haystack. Crank your favourite Crüe tunes and enjoy this highly detailed trip down memory lane.

I've read many of Martin Popoff's books and a few were really good (l gave his books on Black Sabbath and Hair Metal a glowing review), but some are hit and miss. This is one of those books that is hit or miss. The book starts off with Introduction in which the author proceeds to make the himself and the band look bad. Popoff makes statements such as: "So, in a general sense, loved the band's goofy, charmed debut, but was intimidated by Shout At The Devil's carnal idiocy (but it's far and above my fave)..." and "I could spend two pages listing all the other bands that were kicking ass all over Motley Crue..." For a man who wrote a book on Motley Crue -he appears to be neither a fan, nor a professional unbiased writer- he makes you question why he did it to begin with if he looks at the band with such disregard. The book suffers from lazy writing and repetitiveness. The author took a good chunk of content from Motley's autobiography, The Dirt, and paraphrased it. There's very little new or insightful in that sense. What l did like where the pictures, many of which l hadn't seen previously. The numerous concert photos, ticket stubs, tour programs, flyers, shirts and signed items are wonderful to look at. To his credit, some of the best photos and items are from the author's own collection. There's a great array of quotes from the band members themselves, various musicians, industry people etc. and they're mostly good. Except until 1984 that is, where 75% of the quotes are simply comparing Motley to KISS. Afterwards they diversify and some are genuinely interesting and provide insight on different topics. The book is a nice flip-through and had great pictures l had never seen plus fun quotes but it's hardly essential for a Crue fan. What really brought it down for me was the author's lazy writing and downright disrespect. I'd recommend Motley Crue: A Visual History 1983-1990 instead. 3 stars.
