“I have had the privilege of knowing Larry Moeller for many years. My first contact was the result of interest he expressed in how a church I led was starting new churches. We met over coffee to chat about church, the mission of Jesus Christ, and how to effectively take the witness of the church into the unreached regions of our back yards. What began as a conversation regarding church philosophy blossomed into a friendship built around the grace-filled message of Jesus. “In our times together I have always admired his deep relationship with God. I have appreciated his willingness to reflect on and apply the insights God gives him through his meditative approach to scripture. He is one of those unique folks who can bring the truth of God's word into the realm of current society. He knows the words that were written centuries ago must echo into the life canyons of today. What God spoke to the founders of the faith must speak to those of us who have placed our faith in the Savior they declared, defended, and delighted in. “These sermon dialogues, Claim the Flame, are an example of this. Larry takes us into conversations between Paul and his contemporaries to provide glimpses into how they fleshed out their faith stories. The words contained in these personal interactions allow us to step back into history. And it is in our stepping back we discover stuff we can use to step forward in life today. “Bridges must be built to span the chasm between the history of the faith and our current faith. These seven dialogues help to build those bridges. “I encourage you to build those bridges. Incorporate these into the life of your congregation. Use them to help your congregants grasp the richness of faith. The result will be clearer understanding, greater faith, and deeper commitment to Christ and his church.” The Rev. Claim the Flame By Ethan Patterson In Claim the Flame, Moeller does an excellent job of balancing the various concerns and goals inherent in the creation of such a work. On the one hand, Claim the Flame is a fun exploration of the character of the Apostle Paul and various other early Christian figures, and despite the advertised “whimsy,” it succeeds in reminding the audience that while the actual historical figures may not have had the exact personalities Moeller gives them, they did, quite certainly have personalities. The work is more than just a fun character exploration, though. Paul's struggles with aging and his “crotchety” nature make for a simple but interesting narrative. In a particularly poignant section, Moeller has the apostle confront his fairly restrictive views on women as expressed in his earlier writings, contrasting them with some of his later epistles, primarily Galatians. The only criticism that I would offer is that the final dialogue between Paul and Timothy seems to bear a little more than its fair share of the narrative load compared to the other sections. The core of Claim the Flame, however, is its thematic content. Paul's admonition to Timothy to “fan into flame the gift of God that is within you”--from which the title is drawn--is referenced repeatedly throughout the dialogues. In addition to the main theme, Moeller uses each interaction to illustrate other themes more specific to each character, whether through their advice to Paul or his advice to them. These smaller thematic arcs, rather than distracting from the Claim the Flame message, help to support and add nuance to it. The work also avoids the trite moral lessons found in many small dramatic works intended for congregations, instead focusing on the scriptural basis for themes without simply devolving into a scripture quote-off between the characters, with each section listing a few passages of scripture from which its thematic content is drawn.Claim the Flame was written for the edification of a local congregation. I feel that because of that, it could be well used for the edification of other congregations as well. It doesn't need classically trained actors to be effective; if the dialogues are delivered with the same sincerity that they were written, the message will be heard.

By Binkerbun1 Claim the Flame is one of those books that manages to blend the contemporary and historical in easy comfort. It's one of those books that is so easy to read, you can miss the depth of thought and scriptural knowledge Larry Moeller imparts.Claim the Flame is a wonderful offering to Larry's church in Maryville, Tennessee and a gift to each of us who reads it. Because the skits are written almost as Reader's Theatre, they can be easily performed by any church, anywhere. If your church doesn't have a drama ministry, this is an excellent place to begin. If your church is already involved in worshipful drama, this is a must own.I've added it to my daily rotation of faith and worship resources. I highly recommend it ... and invite you to share it with a friend.Elizabeth Benbrook
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. and of love, and of self-discipline of which Paul describes in ... By Richard Dalhaus The author has artfully created dialogues between the biblical characters he’s chosen to emphasize the power of trusting in “the ‘nudge’ of the Spirit” that is within each of us to move toward the future that God desires for us. Imperative is that now, not later, is the time to actively accept God’s “gift” of the spirit of power, and of love, and of self-discipline of which Paul describes in his letter to Timothy (2 Timothy 1:6-7) Implied throughout this author’s intention for this set of 7 dialogues is that we trust in God and remain committed to the process of connecting the dots between what we do with our lives, actions, and words and what God desires for us. An enjoyable and thoughtful read! Richard Dalhaus
