The 500 claim on the cover must include each and every use of tangles in completed squares. The examples are excellent I just felt cheated out of examples especially taking into count the cost. See Zentangle Art Therapy for $8. Much more bang for your dollar.

The first book to focus on the new trend in graffiti and street art: permanent murals on a gigantic scale

Once upon a time, illegal graffiti and street art were modest in scale, hastily created in hours or even minutes and destroyed just as quickly by authorities, vandals, or the weather. Now, however, architects, urban planners, and development companies have begun to support the creation of large murals, allowing street artists and graffiti artists to make carefully planned, more permanent works, sometimes covering entire buildings, and adding a whole new visual dimension to the world’s cities. For this spectacular volume, Claudia Walde, whose own recent 1,800-square-foot, brilliantly colored mural on the Alte Messe, Leipzig, was created in just one grueling week of work, has selected more than 200 of the best XXL mural works from around the world and profiled thirty artists who pioneered this trend. Working in dangerous conditions, hundreds of yards above the ground, yet always keenly aware of the viewer’s perspective from street level, these new street muralists are as fearless and technically skilled as they are brilliant and creative. With exclusive commentary from the practitioners as well as detailed information about their planning, methods, challenges, and inspirations, Mural XXL also includes a map identifying exciting murals around the world. 275 color illustrations

By Sandy Rodgers I read The Art of Self Promotion on a flight from Atlanta to Los Angeles. It held my attention so intently that the ride seemed to last only an hour or so. The benefit I received was in organizing and pulling my story together to be able to quickly and effortlessly Tell My Story to anyone. It made me think back in an unique way to where my life's interests first began. It was amazing to discover the links of my footsteps from young child to current life. Connecting the dots made the whole process seem easy and fun. A quick read (maybe that was just because I was on an airplane) that keeps you engaged about your own life! I thoroughly enjoyed the book and have used the concepts with much success. I was offered a job that fits me perfectly that I never applied for. When you are in your zone, you radiate a higher frequency and people feel and see it!! Thanks Debby Stone. A Masterful Book

By katie bigley This is a well written, informative book on how to self promote. Debby covers an array of topics in a conversational tone that makes the book so easy to read. I especially like how she acknowledges up front all the preconceived notions and negative thoughts we tend to have about self promoting and then gives practical advice to overcome these issues. When you finish the book you will feel inspired to set your goals, find an accountability partner and start your journey towards perfecting your self promoting skills. I would highly recommend the book to everyone and anyone. There isn't a specific time in life you should be more focused on self promoting than others - it is a skill you should constantly practice so that you are always prepared to tell your story!

At a time when the studio is making a stunning comeback, film historian Thomas Schatz provides an indispensable account of Hollywood's tradional blend of business and art. This book lays to rest the persistent myth that businesspeople and producers stifle artistic talent and reveals instead the genius of a system of collaboration and conflict. Working from industry documents, Schatz traces the development of house styles, the rise and fall of careers, and the making-and unmaking-of movies, from Frankenstein to Spellbound to Grand Hotel. Richly illustrated and highly readable, The Genius of the System gives the definitive view of the workings of the Old Hollywood and the foundations of the New.

The Genius of the System: Hollywood Filmmaking in the Studio Era, by Thomas Schatz

From Publishers Weekly In this original, monumental survey of Hollywood's film studios during their most glorious period, Schatz, professor at the University of Texas and author of Hollywood Genres , in contrast with the directorial theories of Andrew Sarris and other film historians, describes the creative give-and-take, the symbiotic accord between creators and front offices, in which the styles of writers, directors and stars fused with studio management structures, production operations, talent pools, narrative traditions and market strategies. Analytically and with anecdote examining the financial as well as creative workings of MGM, Warner Bros., Para mount, Universal and RKO in the era of Thalberg, Selznick, Zanuck and Hitchcock, Schatz demonstrates that at the heart of each studio's house style were the star-genre formulations (Bette Davis melodramas, Humphrey Bogart thrillers, Boris Karloff horror films, Gene Kelly musicals) that nowadays, as they are recirculated and rediscovered by young viewers, are all that remain of the great studios and of the vigorous, dynamic men and women who sustained them. Photos. Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Several other histories of Hollywood's studio system have already been published, including Robert Stanley's The Celluloid Empire (LJ 5/15/78), Douglas Gomery's The Hollywood Studio System (LJ 1/86), and Ethan Mordden's The Hollywood Studios (LJ 5/15/88). All these books have some value, but Mordden and Schatz win top honors. Larger libraries should purchase both books, as they complement each other. Mordden's primary interest is aesthetics; Schatz's is business. Mordden's writing is sometimes brilliant, while Schatz's is only good, but Schatz has obviously done a lot of research, and he puts it to good use in a very readable book. Review

“There was much to criticize in the Hollywood system, and much to marvel at. But one can't do either without the means to make sense of it. This book provides that.” ―Elizabeth Kendall, The New York Times Book Review

“Brings the pace and confusion and inspiration of filmmaking to life...Schatz has made a lasting contribution to film history.” ―Directors Guild of America Newsletter

Just an excellent book on the subject By Robert McManus Prof. Schatz does not suffer from the scholar's disease of academic-speak and writes a book that clearly demonstrates his expertise on the studio structure. Most books I have read extended the view of the outsider looking in at the star system and not the economics of the studios. "Genius of the System" chronicles the history of the studio's business, that is to say the economics and the people behind the economics. If you want to read about the business structure of Hollywood during its beginnings, this is the book for you. I cannot recommend it enough.

22 of 24 people found the following review helpful. Hollywood's golden age is richly revealed and explained. By A Customer An easy to read writer, Thomas Schatz details how the studio system worked from the silent era to its final collapse in the 1960s.He illuminates both the art and the business of films, with keen analysis of how producers, directors and screenwriters created such fine art (and rich profits) -- especially the producers, who are more the authors of Hollywood films than any other group. He convincingly portrays MGM's Irving Thalberg as a genius of art and commerce and MGM's Louis B. Mayer as a clod (except when dealing with difficult stars).Schatz offers telling portraits of many others who did their best work under the constraints of the Hollywood system. He details the major studios' styles and how they evolved over the years. It's clear he has read file cabinets of documents, from endless -- but revealing -- memos to how much the stars made(!).He also puts the film industry in social and cultural context; he even says the anti-communist witch hunts of the 1940s and 1950s were a disguised form of anti-semitism.In the end, Schatz offers a convincing alternative to the auteur theory.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating, but buyer beware By R. Deniston Schatz's book is well-rounded and nicely structured. It was a good decision on his part to take a round-robin focus on each studio instead of trying to mix them together, as some authors have. All of the studios had different ideas about what they wanted to achieve in their work, so this approach makes sense. Twentieth-Century Fox and Paramount were left out completely, but Schatz was clearly trying to choose one studio of each type of size and characteristic so as to keep control of the scope of the book. I did find a glaring error--the finale to "Babes in Arms" was not the minstral number, but the song, "God's Country." In a book of this size, or of any size for that matter, errors will creep in, so it isn't the kiss of death. However, if the reader is familiar with MGM musicals, it may be a small turn-off. Also, I wasn't satisfied with the epilogue. Instead of citing examples of the comeback of the studio system (LucasFilm, for instance), Schatz simply outlines the creative decline of Alfred Hitchcock. Huh. Slight shortcomings aside, this book is very entertaining. I wish my film studies textbooks had been this interesting.

I bought one for myself and then had one shipped to a friend as a gift and she loves it too. I really enjoy that it has ukulele on it, as I have a ukulele and before listening to this CD I imagined that ukulele would not be 'suitable' for kirtan - it's great to hear how wrong I was! I find listening to this CD lifts my mood immediately I put it on and I feel like dancing :) Thank to David and Mira and all who helped this CD to be made.

I am sort of a control freak and so I like reading about someone giving up control, since its such a foreign concept to me. It interests my intellectual side, sort of like a scientist studying a subject. So I'm anxious to read more about her giving up control to her sex therapist. I want to know if they are going to continue their professional relationship and I'm hoping start a personal one. I'm hoping she stands up for herself soon in her personal life and gives Evan the boot up his bum he deserves. He doesn't deserve her. I'm excited to see how this story unfolds.

High Stakes: The Rising Cost of America's Gambling Addiction, by Sam Skolnik

Review “This important book will be of interest to all Americans but should be required reading for politicians who see gambling as a panacea for their state’s fiscal problems.”—Library Journal “Read this book: If you have a casino near your home. If you know someone who gambles. If you have kids. If you gamble. Sam Skolnik has drawn from a mind-boggling array of sources and data on gambling pathology and casino-industry economics, proving that, like it or not, casinos and gambling addiction are inexorably entwined."─Christina Binkley, author of Winner Takes All: Steve Wynn, Kirk Kerkorian, Gary Loveman, and the Race to Own Las Vegas and columnist for The Wall Street Journal“Combining his award-winning skills as an investigative reporter with his insights as a gambler, Sam Skolnik’s High Stakes examines the underbelly of America’s addiction to gambling. Propelled by the gambling industry’s promises of jobs and economic development, and ushered in by politicians assuring painless revenue streams, Skolnik reveals the truth in this important and long overdue book. High Stakes is a must read for every citizen who wants to understand the true cost of legalized gambling.”—Reverend Tom Grey, Field Coordinator and National Spokesperson for the Stop Predatory Gambling Foundation“Sam Skolnik tells this story with the added chilling authority of someone struggling to control his own poker habit. The result is a fascinating glimpse at the gaming industry’s seductive appeal and the price we're paying as gambling is legalized more and more around the country.”─Pete Earley, author of Super Casino: Inside the "New" Las Vegas  “Sam Skolnik takes you into compelling territory—the nation’s trillion-dollar gambling empire, the world of pathological addiction it has spawned, and its deceitful public relations spin.  With the research skills of a journalist, a cast of poignant characters, and a provocative personal story, Skolnik’s High Stakes is an important exposé.”—Sally Denton, investigative reporter and co-author of The Money and the Power: The Making of Las Vegas and its Hold on America“Skolnik rips off the sparkly silicone sheen of glamour that coats the [Las Vegas] Strip and shows the whole skein of pathologies we live with here.” —J. Patrick Coolican, Las Vegas Sun columnistFrom the Hardcover edition.

From chapter 2 Welcome to Las Vegas, Problem Gambling Capital of the World   Walk into a Las Vegas casino, or any of the almost countless bars, groceries, and retailers throughout the region with video poker machines, and there is a good chance you will see a rack of glossy pamphlets showing an orange sun setting over a black ocean. The words When the Fun Stops are stenciled above the image.   Every eighteen to twenty-four months, the Nevada Council on Problem Gambling prints a 200,000-copy run of its brochure. For more than a decade, the council has sold the brochures in order to help satisfy Nevada Gaming Commission regulations that require every licensed gambling outlet in the state to provide information on the nature and symptoms of problem gambling in “conspicuous places,” including ATMs and casino cages.   Some casino companies produce their own materials. But several others, including MGM Mirage and Station Casinos, have used the council’s brochures for years (MGM Mirage changed its name to MGM Resorts International in June 2010). The council distributes the remainder to local seniors facilities, community centers, and schools as part of its efforts to raise awareness about the dangers of gambling. Inside, the pamphlet provides a description of problem gambling, a listing of warning signs, and a toll-free number to call for help.   The catch phrase “When the Fun Stops” was devised by Howie C., who has contributed more than anyone over the last four decades to support problem gamblers in Las Vegas—and arguably the country. “One of things I’m most proud of is, you know the ‘When the Fun Stops’ brochures that are all around the state? That was my idea,” he said. “I coined that phrase. The thing I’m happy about is that they have to be there, by state law. They have to be everywhere there are machines.”   Howie—who asked that he not be identified by his full last name given his thirty-seven years in Gamblers Anonymous—is a small, trim man with a gray and white goatee that points off of an angular face. At seventy-one, he is clear-spoken and has a sharp recollection of recent and decades-old events in his life. We spoke over a late breakfast at a Las Vegas diner.   The story of Howie’s descent into addiction is not exceptional. What is extraordinary is the story of how in the early years, beginning with his first GA meeting, he nearly single-handedly built the infrastructure to aid problem gamblers in Las Vegas, and then, part of the rest of the United States. When I mentioned to a friend of mine from GA in Seattle that I was moving to Las Vegas, he urged me to look Howie up.   “He’s a legend,” he said.       Howie first reached his gambling limit in 1971, six years after moving his family from Los Angeles to Las Vegas to become a professional gambler. Quickly realizing that he would not be successful in his new choice of profession, he found a career in the casino business, like many Vegas gamblers. Howie spun so out of control that he contemplated suicide because of his gambling, so he searched for a Gamblers Anonymous meeting in Las Vegas. Unable to find any GA presence in the nation’s gambling capital, he took his family on vacation to San Diego and attended his first GA meeting there.   It was a revelation to be able to tell his story to others who had undergone similar traumas and to hear their stories. The other gamblers told him about the one small weekly meeting then held in Las Vegas and how to find it. He showed up the following Monday evening at a Methodist church just blocks away from the downtown casinos. Five people including Howie sat around a card table. But it was a different experience than the San Diego meeting. Only two of the five attendees spoke—by engaging in an hour-long argument— and a couple of the people actually were there to get gambling tips, not to talk about the destructiveness of their habit and their need to quit. It was like an alcoholic showing up to an AA meeting because he needed directions to the nearest bar.   Howie concluded that he needed to get involved and set up other weekly groups. In part, this was self-preservation: he had to attend, and therefore create, meetings closer to the beginning of the weekend, or there was a greater chance he’d slip and gamble. He quickly became the founding father of the GA movement in Las Vegas. For the first decade after he started with GA, he founded all of the meetings in Vegas. And he took on all the necessary roles to help the meetings grow: founder, meeting chair, secretary, public relations liaison. “Every position there is in GA, I did them all,” he said. By 1981, he estimated that there were twenty-eight different weekly meetings in the region. He also helped start meetings in several western and southern states, and internationally, in England, Iceland, and Australia.   In time, Howie founded the Nevada Council on Problem Gambling, an offshoot of the National Council on Problem Gambling that educates state residents and procures funding for treatment programs and a toll-free help line. For more than two decades he also worked as a counselor with the Problem Gambling Center in Las Vegas, the leading gambling treatment facility in the state. He was, as he says, a man of many hats.   That changed on March 18, 2009. After thirty-seven years of abstinence, Howie gambled. Soon after, he left GA and was fired from the Problem Gambling Center after being spotted placing a sports bet at a locals casino in north Las Vegas. Robert Hunter, the founder and clinical director of the center, said he received e-mails from recovering gamblers around the world distressed by Howie’s return to a gambling life. He said he urged them to dwell on the notion that Howie might someday come back to the movement—and that regardless, the good he did could never be undone.   “He can’t do anything that erases the lives he’s touched,” said Hunter. “He’s helped more people than Albert Schweitzer.”        There’s a reason why Howie was easily able to spread his gambling abstinence gospel during his early days in Las Vegas, and why after decades in recovery, he found himself in a position to fall off the wagon quickly. It’s the same reason why many Las Vegans have suffered devastating downward spirals after finding themselves caught in gambling’s grip.   Las Vegas possesses unique qualities for a city—its casino culture is embedded into neighborhoods far beyond the tourist-centered Las Vegas Strip and into the rest of the Las Vegas Valley. In addition to the more than two dozen huge casino resorts on the Strip, there are more than twenty-five full-service casinos specifically designed to lure the “locals” trade as opposed to tourists, as well as the dozen casino/hotels in the city’s older downtown district, which also in part cater to locally based gamblers.   This gambling mecca has become the nation’s problem gambling capital. In the last several decades, gambling has been absorbed into every facet of life in Las Vegas, and the consequences have been dire. Local residents have found themselves hooked. In turn, this has helped lead to higher gambling-related social costs than anywhere else in the country.   As voters around the country are weighing whether to expand gambling’s reach, and as the notion that increased availability of gambling leads to more problem gamblers gains credibility, where better to test this theory than Las Vegas? Where better to show what could happen to other cities and towns if gambling was legalized to anywhere near the same extent?   The Las Vegas area’s population has exploded over the last decade and residents are inundated with opportunities to gamble. There are 14,000 video poker and slot machines that chime day and night in Clark County, which includes Las Vegas and its suburbs, in more than 1,400 restaurants and bars and retailers of all types, from big-chain groceries and drug stores to 7-Elevens and Kmarts. That is not counting the 1,150 machines at McCarran International Airport. They are seemingly everywhere.   Upon arrival, new residents find the highest problem and pathological gambling rates in the country and more Gamblers Anonymous chapter meetings than in any other city—fourteen per day on average. There are an estimated 115,000 adult problem and pathological gamblers in Nevada—mostly clustered in and around Las Vegas. Their issues have become fixed parts of the region’s communal landscape.   Partially due to this, Las Vegas and Nevada boast higher rates of crime, bankruptcy filings, home foreclosures, divorces, and suicides than anywhere else in the country.   It would not be fair or correct to conclude that the highest problem gambling rates in the country were the direct and sole cause of these problems. For example, authorities have noted that local police have been unable to grow as fast as the population, a contributing factor to the high rate of crime. There are other similar, valid, if partial, explanations for each of these indicators—including the notion, bolstered by studies on the region, that Las Vegas often attracts people inclined to contribute to these social ills.   Yet in survey after survey, it has become clear that increased problem gambling leads to increased social costs. In dollar terms, a study on the topic coauthored by prominent University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), researchers concluded that problem and pathological gambling among southern Nevada residents results in costs conservatively estimated to be between $301 million and $469 million per year. There can be little question that Las Vegas is a damaged community—and no doubt at all that the effects of gambling’s immersion into its culture has played a significant role. From the Hardcover edition.

Elsner Sam Skolnik makes an admission right upfront in this penetrating look into America's gambling habit: he himself has been grappling with a gambling addiction for the past 10 years. It has not killed him or driven him into bankruptcy or to suicide or to drugs or crime -- but it has degraded his performance as a human being and a responsible citizen. He has left bills unpaid, borrowed irresponsibly, neglected his career and allowed important personal relationships to wither.Skolnik's point is well-taken. What has happened to him on a personal level is happening to the whole country. Gambling is not killing America -- but it is subtly degrading its performance, making us a worse country, morally, economically and socially. This is a well-researched and well-written book, full of sad personal histories. Skolnik makes the point that gambling is at its heart a giant system for redistributing wealth away from the poor who can least afford it and into the pocket of powerful lobbies and corporations. Just as individuals become hooked on gambling, states, cities and communities become hooked on the taxes they gather from the industry -- which do not cover the social costs that gambling creates. Cities and states may resist allowing casinos to establish themselves -- but the gambling industry can lose vote after vote -- until they finally win one. Once they win, they are in -- and they're never going away.Gambling, in the words of one economist quoted here, is a "sterile transfer of money, creating no new value." Like prisons, it brings low-paid jobs into communities that need them -- but it sucks money from the weakest members of society.Skolink's portrait of Las Vegas is particularly chilling. Far from the glitzy casinos full of high rollers, he shows a city that preys most of all on its own most vulnerable citizens. The suicide is roughly double the national average and the highest in the country; Nevada also leads the nation in bankruptcy filings, it leads in six different crime categories including murder and rape, it leads in home deliquencies, divorce and homelessness. My one criticism of this book is that the author doesn't really prescribe solutions to this problem. But perhaps as one who combats his own addiction every day, he knows there are no magic bullets. Some individuals, we are told, may have a predetermined propensity to embrace addictive lifestyles. Perhaps what is true for individuals is also true for nations.

Even though the author perhaps wasn't as bad off as some people with gambling addictions, it was still hard to read about his struggles. "It's not easy to write these things. There's a certain shame attached to confessing a gambling addiction in our culture, even more so than copping to being an alcoholic or a cocaine addict. Many still believe that people gamble excessively because of a lack of willpower or because they're simply immoral. these antiquated beliefs are beginning to fad, as doctors, scientists, and researchers are increasingly concluding that pathological gambling is a behavioral addiction that affects the brain in much the same way as substance dependencies."But this isn't just a memoir about the author's struggle with addiction, though that component adds so much to this book! The statistics, insights, and way he writes about it makes this book a worthy and compelling read. I learned so much, and I learned to have compassion on the people yet recognize the harmful attributes of gambling, both in personal lives, and in communities,If you are addicted to gambling, or know people who are, or just want to gather more facts and perspective on gambling, I highly recommend this well-researched book. One could argue that he's biased due to his struggle, but his perspective makes it even more of a reason to read this book and consider these things. Add to that, the style of writing, tone of this book is one that draws you into what (for some) could be perceived as a boring subject. This is not a boring subject; it is one that each of us should be aware of and learn more about. I'm grateful for the opportunity to have read this book and I hope it makes an impact on others who read it.

Kennedy This is an extremely well-researched and reported book about the gambling life and the toll it takes on individuals and on society. The author examines not only the end result of gambling, but also its roots, the reason games of chance appeal to the human psyche.Mr. Skolnik delves deeply into facets of gambling that I've never seen addressed before; for example, the particular allure of gambling in Asian cultures. He interviews dozens of people, gamblers themselves as well as those involved in both promoting and regulating the gambling industry. His narrative is enlivened by these insightful conversations.I looked in vain, though, for a chapter on gambling and the elderly. Living as close to Atlantic City as I do, I find it puzzling and sad that those who can least afford to gamble -- the elderly who live mostly on Social Security and Medicaid -- flock to casinos that cold-heartedly take their food, utility and rent money, luring them there with shuttle buses and free buffet tickets. My spouse's elderly aunt kept a shelf full of "lucky" elephants that she took on her trips to the casinos. She bragged about wins that were obviously fictitious, given her living situation. It makes me angry even today. The author also undercuts his arguments against gambling by confessing his own penchant for poker. While he recognizes in his head the dangers of high-stakes poker, and admits the money he has lost to it, the aversion hasn't taken hold in his heart. His continuing fascination for the game is obvious, and to me, equally as sad as any of the other stories he tells in this book. "For what it's worth, I was ranked by the site [a poker industry website] to be among the top 4,100 poker tournament players in the world." What is that worth, Mr. Skolnik? I'd love to read more of this author's personal story when he finally does fold.

“One of the playwrights our country, and our language, has produced.” – Tony Kushner“Quirky, disturbing, and inexplicably beautiful theatrical poetry.” – Cary M. Mazer, Philadelphia City Paper“Congdon writes like a woman possessed.” – Nels Nelson, New York Daily NewsAn immensely inventive and challenging writer, Constance Congdon is one of America’s finest playwrights, endowed with great compassion, keen insight and an unfailing comic sensibility. Throughout the plays in her first collection, she demonstrates a range rare in writers in any age, from a somber meditation on life in the postnuclear age (No Mercy) to madcap social satire (Losing Father’s Body), from an epic historical exploration of love and sexual identity (Casanova) to her most popular play to date (Tales of the Lost Formicans), acclaimed by William A. Henry III of Time magazine as “A travel guide to Middle America conducted by aliens from outer space… If not the best new play of recent years, surely the most imaginative.”Constance Congdon’s plays have been produced throughout the United States and abroad. She has received playwriting fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Rockefeller and Guggenheim foundations, and is the winner of Oppenheimer/Newsday, W. Alton Jones and L/ Arnold Weissberger awards. Congdon, an alumna of New Dramatists, currently teaches playwriting at Amherst College.

A contemporary of Sam Sheppard and August Wilson, her late-blooming fame is probably due to the facts that she is a woman, and that her work cannot be categorized. Her plays, as evident in this broad collection, run the gamut from the lyrical to the overheard conversation, to some magical place in-between. They are deeply moving and often hilarious. The world would do well to sit up and pay attention to this post-modern bard.Suzyn Jackso

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. a must read collection By A Customer It is a crime that Constance Congdon is not a household name like Arthur Miller. She consistantly writes some of the best, most touching, and startling original plays that this nation has ever produced. She has written much more than this retrospective would indicate, but this is a good collection that shows a range or her style and content. It is nearly pointless to try to summarize the inclusions here as the unfolding of the unknown into something painfully familiar is part of the delight of her work. Her writing challenges the expectations of the reader/audience, without causing separation from the pieces. Anyone looking to read some plays that prove sublime enjoyment and mind-blowing freshness are not mutually exclusive would be well served to pick up this excellent volume.

By A Customer i have recently read this play twice because i will soon be stage managing this very play at my university...if there is someone out that that is considering to read Constance Congdon's play, please read it. and if all else, i quote something my director told me when she was considering this play, "Constance songdon reminds me of Arthur Miller...on ACID!!!" i know it's funny, but when you are done reading this play you will understand what she meant; and it's TRUE.

By Wayne McNamara I have enjoyed sudoku very much in recent years and was always curious about how they were made. Especially the classical sudoku where there is just one way to solve a puzzle. How do the creator of a puzzle know if he had left enough clues for the puzzle to be solved? I read this book with great interest and was pleasantly surprised at how simple the process of making my own could be. I was never confused. Very clear step by step instructions and oodles of illustrations showing how made it very accessible.

Opera is often regarded as the pinnacle of high art. A "Western" genre with global reach, it is where music and drama come together in unique ways, supported by stellar singers and spectacular scenic effects. Yet it is also patently absurd -- why should anyone break into song on the dramatic stage? -- and shrouded in mystique. In this engaging and entertaining guide, renowned music scholar Tim Carter unravels its many layers to offer a thorough introduction to Italian opera from the seventeenth to the early twentieth centuries.Eschewing the technical musical detail that all too often dominates writing on opera, Carter begins instead where the composers themselves did: with the text. Walking readers through the relationship between music and poetry that lies at the heart of any opera, Carter then offers explorations of five of the most enduring and emblematic Italian operas: Monteverdi's The Coronation of Poppea; Handel's Julius Caesar in Egypt; Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro; Verdi's Rigoletto; and Puccini's La Bohème. Shedding light on the creative collusions and collisions involved in bringing opera to the stage, the various, and varying, demands of the text and music, and the nature of its musical drama, Carter also shows how Italian opera has developed over the course of music history. Complete with synopses, cast lists, and suggested further reading for each work discussed, Understanding Italian Opera is a must-read for anyone with an interest in and love for this glorious art.

Understanding Italian Opera, by Tim Carter

Review "We all know the composer had the last word but who had the first one? By shedding new light on the alchemical fusion of words and music that lies at the heart of Italian Opera T.C brings librettists out of the shadows to challenge the overriding supremacy of the composer. A must for practitioners and enthusiasts alike." --Graham Vick, Artistic Director, Birmingham Opera Company

"[F]or the opera goer or student of opera who wants to develop a deeper understanding of how Italian opera works--of the often complex relationship between text and music--or who wants a model on how to think about Italian opera, this will become required reading."--Choice

About the Author Tim Carter is David G. Frey Distinguished Professor of Music at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and a noted scholar of opera and musical theatre. He frequently gives pre-performance lectures and workshops on opera to a wide variety of audiences in both the US and the UK.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful book for series Italian opera fans By Italophile Book Reviews Opera, "an exotic and irrational entertainment", was born in Italy, and grew up and died there. The author takes a microscope to Italian opera in this book, which is really for serious students of the art form. What is the art form? It is verse and music made by a team, a librettist and a composer, used to create either musical drama or musical comedy for the stage. All the arts of stage entertainment are used to create the emotion that is opera: music, staging, costumes, choreography, singers, lyrics.Fascinatingly, the author points out that early opera was an attempt to recreate the entertainments of Ancient Greece during a Humanist revival era in Florence, Italy. The Ancient Greeks combined recitation and music on stage, so the earliest operas were recited verse delivered by actors accompanied by music. The author covers a history that spans Monteverdi's Orfeo (1607) to Puccini's La Boheme (1896). These are the chapters of the book:1 What is Opera2 Giovanni Francesco Busenello and Claudio Monteverdi3 Nicola Francesco Haym and George Frideric Handel4 Lorenzo da Ponte and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart5 Francesco maria Piave and Giuseppe Verdi6 Giuseppe Giacosa, Luigi Illica and Giacomo PucciniOperatic love stories, with their seriously flawed characters and exotic settings were high poetical drama set to music. While the music changed over time from early Baroque declamation to late Romantic lyricism, the words were Italian poetry. The librettist was always a poet, using meter, rhyme and form, because the words in opera are poetical, not prose. The standard subjects were historical, mythological, pastoral, sacred lives of saints, buffa domestic comedy, or based on popular plays. The author offers a close reading of five operas. (The Italian texts are translated for the reader, but a fluency in the language of music would be helpful.)2 Baroque operas:Incoronazione di Poppea by Busenello and Monteverdi 1643Giulio Cesare in Egitto 1724 by Haym and Handel1 Classical opera:Le Nozze di Figaro 1786 by da Ponte and Mozart2 Romantic operasRigoletto 1851 by Piave and VerdiLa Boheme 1896 by Giacosa and PucciniThe dissection of the operas are done to discover the basic workings of opera, such as the subjects, how to stage then, and to learn to look at opera as drama. The author looks at the cast, the history, a summary of the plot, early performances, and the lyrics for each.Meter, rhyme, and form are studied in detail for various examples from the operas, including folksongs, prayer songs, toasts, and intro songs (I-songs for the protagonist to introduce him/herself to the audience). There may be a bit more than most readers would want to know in this book. I found that the dissection of the operas destroyed something, as dissection always does. You come to understand the operas technically which can lessen the emotional impact of the beauty of the performance. This is a book for aficionados, and would-be librettist and composers, and for serious students of the art form. At times it read like a talk to a university class or an opera club. There is an extensive Further Reading section for those who wish to continue their study of opera. For the full and illustrated review please visit Italophile Book Reviews. I received a review-copy of the book, and this is my honest review.
