The BBC TV series Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell introduced Susanna Clarke's bestseller to a new audience and brought the fantastical happenings of the novel to life. Yammering statues, rainwater flotillas and resurrected wives sat comfortably against a familiar backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars, a mad king on the throne and an even madder one set to make a comeback. The fates of Strange and Norrell, the two men spearheading the English magic revival, intertwine in this hysterically entertaining alternative history. At turns funny, bleak and shocking it had at its heart a striking enactment of the ancient battle between order and chaos, reason and emotion. TV critic James Donaghy is your guide through the show. All seven episodes recapped and dissected with the devilry and daring of a horny fairy who comes to steal your wife.

Contrasting Heroes By DaveO I viewed the TV series first, which was very good though it made some changes from the book, probably because the original story would have required too much additional video material. I found the book moved the story along very satisfyingly, making it difficult to put down. The character development of the leading players was well done, becoming more three dimensional as the story developed. I particularly enjoyed the contrast between Strange and Norell, and their growing appreciation for each other despite their differences as the story progressed to its conclusion. I particularly enjoyed the the conclusion, which does leave room for a sequel.

I enjoyed the show for the most part but I also read the book and found if I hadn't watched the show I wouldn't have understood some of the nuances.
