This book is about a humorous rollicking backstage look into the lives of 2 Toll Collectors working for the New York State Thruway Authority. It primarily spans the years of 1970-2010 and answers the readers' question of-who are the men and women I see standing and collecting money while encased and ensconced in a small rectangular exhaust fume- riddled tollbooth? It is for the licensed driver who has fumbled for exact change while approaching the majestic toll barrier and paused to wonder, exactly what goes on in that toll station? The late actor and television game show host of "What's My Line" Larry Blyden said on air, "...It(Toll Collector) must be the most dullest job that I can think of." This book answers why it isn't, by vicariously allowing the reader into the toll lane to share the sights, sounds, smells, fun and misadventures of two teenaged Toll Keepers. The book covers some of the history of turnpike roadways across the United States, the newer modernization of electronic toll collection, poignant toll plaza love stories as well as famous celebrities stopping by the lane to pick up their toll tickets. It also has the actual letters of complaint filed by roadway motorists against abusive toll collectors in the past decades. . The book's authors are Lewis B. Zimet, M.D. a temp-seasonal part-time toll collector in the mid 1970's. Lewis made the "What's My Line?" television appearance in 1974 as a Pre-Med Toll Collector on the New York State Thruway( the panel didn't guess his occupation but did ask him If he worked with animals?). The video is currently available to be seen on www.youtube.com. He later completed college and graduated medical school and became a Physician of Diagnostic Internal Medicine. Lewis did get the itch and hankering for his old job and made one spontaneous rare appearance at the Toll Plaza. He actually went back outside to his old toll booth after 20 years to collect tolls in 1995. During that reunion stint, a thruway motorist asked him "Is this your full-time Job?" Lewis politely handed back a toll receipt and said "No Sir. I am actually a Medical Doctor." The book's co-author Lee D. Babbin has the seniority and insight and experience necessary for this project. Lee worked as a Toll Collector for the NYS Thruway Authority from May 1972- December 1997. Although currently retired from the tollbooth, he is now hard at work in his auto-service industry career. His mind is a vivid storied recollection of the events that transpired along the Thruway during his 25 years of active service to the roadway. So come along for the ride and be sure to pay your toll.

This book takes you to that place again. The reader is traveling through time. Not just watching individual film frames from a silent movie, but watching a vast number of actors and characters streaming in and out. The road you travel in your mind is a microcosm of life. You will meet famous people that you never would get to meet and talk to. Sports writers and sports players. Politicians of all kinds. Good mannered people and not so like able people. Saving an infants life in the arms of a distraught mother crying for help. Calling a trooper to watch for a DWI passing through your gateway on their way to meet his or her own demise. The officer calls to report the DWI is off the road and safe, to return to their loved one and kids one more time. There are jokes and laughter throughout the book that allow the gatekeepers to endure toxic air, long lonely cold hours, sweat box...and well, you need to read this book to find out about the "rest of the story".
