A new version of the Greek classic play. The ancient world is gripped by a long and futile war. While the men of Athens fight in a foreign land, the women of Athens can take no more. Lysistrata, the play’s heroine, persuades the women to barricade themselves inside a building and refuse to give their husbands sex until they negotiate an end to the Peloponnesian War and secure peace. She also persuades the women of Sparta, the enemy, to join her cause and refuse sex to their husbands until they too agree to stop the war. The men eventually give in, peace is agreed and the women go home to their husbands.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. The bawdiest anti-war play ever. By Jeffrey J. Greene Aristohanes had the perfect solution to stopping war. And this is it. All the women of Athens lock themselves into the temple of Athena and refuse to come out until their men stop their war.The troupe I was with were criticized severely for presenting this ancient comedy. It's as funny and as bawdy as anyone wishes. Many of Shakespeare's plays are as bawdy if presented that way. it good adult fun if produced correctly, and a great read.

In the original, Norman Lindsay's illustrations are "anatomically correct," but here are reproduced from a visually expurgated edition, leaving the characters as anatomically incomplete as Barbie and Ken--though, make no mistake, this is still NOT suitable for children. Also, footnotes confusingly appear in the middle of the page and in the same font as the text. Dodo Press, you could have dood it better!

The book itself is beautifully produced. The art, by Picaso, is outstanding. I would like to order another copy for my library. Thanks,John Parkinjohn@jpscicom
