Interesting Shakespearean psuedo-history: By James Yanni This is hardly one of Shakespeare's better-known plays, and I can't say that it is under-rated as such; there's a reason that this one doesn't get the attention that Hamlet, or King Lear, or Julius Caesar, or any of the plays that you're likely to have seen or read get. Other than "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers", there aren't many memorable lines to be found here, and the history is just as dubiously historical as in most of Shakespeare's histories. The language, while still prettily Shakespearean, doesn't rise to the heights of his best works, and the plot is no better than one expects. Still, there is interest to be found in the machinations of York, Queen Margaret, Beaufort, and the rest. The political manuevering is effectively plausible, which makes the characterizations rather more interesting than in some of Shakespeare's works. So the three stars that I've given it rate it against other Shakespearean plays; if one ranked it against the general run of books in existence, it would doubtless get a fourth star just for being as prettily written as all of Shakespeare's works are.

Early Shakespeare play has a good plot and signs of genius By Amazon Customer I have decided to read all of Shakespeare's theatrical works, and started recently with Henry VI part 2 and the Tempest. My thinking was I would start on the earliest, and the last works, and then meet in the middle to keep it interesting. This history play is one of his earliest works, if the experts are to be believed, and it shows in the writing to some extend. Not as advanced as Hamlet or Macbeth, or certainly the Tempest. But still, it's Shakespeare. Superb use of the language in the then evolving Early Modern English language. And how do you rate Shakespeare, really? I liked the plot. Henry VI Part 2 is bloody violent, with lots of heads rolling everywhere. And continued back-biting and dissension in the ranks of the upper classes, which are continually at war in France, if not with each other.
