"Joi Lansing: A Body to Die For colorfully chronicles personal and intimate details of the last four years of the talented ‘50’s “blonde bombshell” star’s fascinating life. After three decades of successful TV and movie appearances and Vegas singing stardom, Ms. Lansing died far too young at just 43. Though her funeral was attended by luminaries of the day (Frank Sinatra sent a huge floral display), her light went out relatively unceremoniously. Always just on the verge of “making it big,” Joi packed them in with standing room only in Vegas, but when the curtain came down and the audience was gone, who was she? Sadly, the one relationship where she was loved for the sweet, gentle woman she really was, the friendship that might have given her the strength to finally cross the finish line for that one moment of glory for which she had run since she began in show business as a little girl of 14, was ended at her death from breast Cancer in the arms of her dear friend, “Rachel.” "Author Alexis Hunter (“friend/baby sister”) was the only person who really knew Joi and knew how she struggled with a suicide-obsessed self-image and deadly drug problem after being a child star at MGM where “uppers” were a common way to keep the kids working 20 hour days. “Stunning black and white photos of Lansing by Maurice Seymour, the era’s Superstar Photographer, make this book a collectors dream.” —Kate Porter-Avery

I remember Miss Lansing from TV shows when I was growing up, so was quite interested in her story. It was a hard story to read, leaving me in tears more than once. She lived in an age where staying young and beautiful was how you survived. An age where some doctors only cared about making money and not how their treatments effected the body. Between silicone and Premarin, she didn't stand a chance. This story tells of her love for a woman, who was introduced as her sister, and her husband who stood by her during her struggle to live. To me it was a beautifully written story portraying a warm and loving woman who anyone would have been privileged to know. It tells of the resilience needed to cope while having to watch a love one fade away and the joy you experience when good days occur. I hope the author went on to experience a good and happy life. Thank you for your story.

Joi Lansing was one of those vavoom actresses of the '50's who showed up a lot in B movies but really made her mark on TV. That is primarily where I remember her from. Incredibly gorgeous, she unfirtunately died from cancer in 1972 when she was in her early 40's.There were some thumbnail bios on the internet that weren't exactly accurate as I was to find out as I read this book. While this book is not comprehensive in terms of covering her entire life and career, you do get some information in passing. Primarily this book written by her lover covers the last four years of Lansing's life and the good times, but also looks at her prolonged and painful death and the toll it took on both Lansing and those close to her.Sad but also funny, it provides a poignant account of a life ended to soon and the unfortunate use of silicon injections in a search for prolonged beauty.

Alexis Hunter gives us a window into true partnership and devotion. Though I’ve never had a romantic relationship with another woman, I have a new appreciation for how intimacy knows no gender. Joi’s short life didn’t have to end so soon, and this story begs the question, “When Doctors play God, who’s watching?”
