These comics, which are being beautifully reprinted by IDW, go for $4 each. So you could get these five issues separately for $20. Even at Amazon's great price, this collection costs slightly more than buying the individual comics. But when it arrived, I couldn't believe I ever hesitated. Because it's an 11" x 9" color hardback an inch thick. It's a known fact that Craig Yoe and his platoon at Yoe Books/ IDW are bringing back dazzling collections of forgotten, comics for which the word "classic" is hopelessly inadequate, but this one pegs the meter. Why get paper comics of Sagendorf's amazing art and story, when you can get this archival edition? I'm asking me that, not you.So why did I get volume five, since, being retired, I can only afford one? Because it's subtitled "Weed Shortage?" Nope. "Weed" in the subtitle, by the way, refers to spinach. The reason is because I leafed through the loose comics, and starting with issue 26, there's a series about two robots, Axle and Cam, which continues through all the issues in this collection (I don't know how long after that) and I love robots. Needless to say, there's lots of other good stuff with Popeye and the cast of E.C. Segar's "Thimble Theater" characters, but those delights are yet ahead, as this volume just arrived from Amazon.One more thing. Up in the right hand corner of the cover is a little icon which reads "Adult and Kid Friendly". I certainly appreciate Craig putting that up there, because the spate of graphic novels coming out these days could not make that claim. Notice too, it's not either/or. Not just "kid friendly", but also for Adults. That means unlike the ghastly things being pandered off today as "kid friendly", with their blah stories and worse "art", you could read this with your kids, and both enjoy it, not unlike, if you were robots, Axle and Cam.
