By Cathode Ray Shadow If you love the ORIGINAL 1980 FRIDAY THE 13TH and stories of independent filmmaking, you will enjoy this book. It also helps if you're a diehard Friday the 13th FRANCHISE fan and really just want to know about every thing that happened during the making of these films.This book covers primarily the making of the original Friday the 13th, the one that started it all! Having read the author's OTHER Making of Friday the 13th book twice (yes, he has done one before that covered the original film extensively then all the other F13 movies, you know I'm a diehard fan!) I loved reading this new edition of the making of FRIDAY THE 13th---Mr. Grove did indeed add a lot of meat to how the movie was made and there's plenty of new stories to read, with the addition of words and reflections from pretty much the entire cast & crew that made the movie.If you like books like...THE JAWS LOG...The Making Of Wes Craven's LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT...and these sort of books, you know what you're in for. Just a very in-depth look at how the movie was conceived from beginning to end, from when it was just a concept in the director's mind all the way through Paramount picking up the movie, releasing it wide, and making it a big hit with audiences.Now, I've also read CRYSTAL LAKE MEMORIES, the coffee table book AND the "uncut" e-book Kindle edition, and if you've read that, you still know almost all the info this book has to offer. As a matter of fact, sections of CRYSTAL LAKE MEMORIES (and the booklet in the recent FRIDAY THE 13TH CD soundtrack box set release) go into MORE DETAIL than this book, especially on postproduction and music. The ending to this book seemed a bit rushed, like the author was on a deadline. What was missed was how Harry Manfredini scored the movie in his basement with just a few orchestra members and how he overlayed it to make it sound like a "larger" score with more violins playing---granted, the story has been told, but all of this info should have been re-told in a nice edition like this.Still, this book is most satisfying and inspiring, the author is obviously a die-hard FRIDAY THE 13th fan and knows his subject, and loves it (though he does not "worship" the movie through fandom eyes, he just tells the story of how the movie was put together and lets the creators and cast do the rest).I do think one of the books "revelations" is a bit questionable, and that is that the director was having an affair with the leading lady---sounds more like a crew member or two that was upset that the movie was so successful and that they didn't share in the profits that the big creators did. I mean, because it was said, it does belong in the context of the book, but since the director was staying at a hotel with his wife and son...I'm not so sure HOW the logistics of such an affair would have even worked with the director being so busy and all, trying to cast his name actress (Betsy Palmer), make sure funds were forthcoming, and coordinating all else...There's no way to tell on this for sure, but having been on many film sets myself over the previous decades, this kind of accusation is common on movie sets, and most times...it is just a rumor!Still, interesting and relevant, as this whole book it! There's other things in here that will be of interest to fans who wanna know every little nitty gritty thing that happened in the course of making this classic horror movie, and I have to say, this book made me turn the pages!Now, again, if you've read CRYSTAL LAKE MEMORIES and don't need to know about every wart and viewpoint (most which echo what has already been covered) from the catering lady on up on the making of this film, you honestly won't be missing a lot. But if you're like me, a person who's devoured every article on the making of my fave films from the beginning, and one who re-reads the books on the making of these films over and over, you will be blown away by this book! It's seriously great to have NEARLY all the stories from all the publications and viewpoints assembled in one nice, big book. So even though it kind of skimps a bit on post production and making the music, it delivers in all the other areas. No stone is left unturned.Another area that is a real treat to read about is how many people take credit for the ENDING of Friday the 13th---two writers (one not credited until Part 2),an effects man, the producer/director, and the main investor ALL take credit for coming up with the ending, or the "gag" where Jason jumps up out of the water and grabs Alice out of the canoe. Trying to figure out who actually thought of it is...mind-boggling, the waters are so muddy there!The book does have a few annoying parts---where actors reflect back on something where a picture was taken and...there is no picture representing the event in the book! That seemed incomplete, as did many bits where "something crazy" happened and it's never elaborated on what happened. For example, Steve Miner is down in Miami filming some softcore porn movie with director Sean C. and somehow ends up in JAIL, and just as they're getting to the juicy details as to WHY or WHAT happened...the book drifts off somewhere else! Ahhhh, inquiring minds wanna know, and there's a few places where things like this are brought up and ultimately, you're left with a cliffhanger that will probably receive no answer. And once again, the "stalker" story that haunted lead actress Adrienne King after F13 was finished is touched upon, but never given the depth and detail that fans would like to know about it---same as in CRYSTAL LAKE MEMORIES. Who knows, maybe this person has been released from jail and they don't want to rile him up? But it would be really interesting to know, in greater detail, what happened and how it was all resolved. I've been reading about this for years now and was hoping to get a fuller picture of what went down...The only other thing I'd like to mention is the fairly [shocking!] cheap quality of this book. I guess I may have been spoiled with the deluxe treatment FRIDAY THE 13th has received with the coffee table book CRYSTAL LAKE MEMORIES and all the awesome box DVD/soundtrack sets, but wow, they really skimped on the quality of this book with the paper stock, photos, and cover. The mail man actually was able to roll the book up in my small mailbox in its envelope to get it in there like a magazine! While the book is thick, it's just...a paperback on very cheap paper stock. Even self-published books on Amazon have a much better quality. The photos, while awesome, are very grainy and not the best quality, compared to the pristine coffee table book CRYSTAL LAKE MEMORIES. This book is published more in the style of Chas. Balun's DEEP RED magazine, which he self-published back in the '90's. Once I got used to this quality, it was fine, but after the deluxe treatment that Author Mike's [the publisher] Kane Hodder book got, I was expecting more of the same here. So while this was initially very disappointing, the almost "coloring book" quality, it was something I got used to. So anyway, if you order this, maybe you won't be surprised. I wish they had it on an e-book edition, I think that would have been the better buy, all things considered, from a collectible standpoint. Skimp on the quality of the spoiled fans, and...we will notice!!! LOL!Anyway, all this is minor quibbling in a book that I found to be an exciting, fun read about one of my favorite slasher movies. I thank the author for the read and for dedicating so much time to a subject that is now just a large, obsessive niche market, despite some minor shortcomings---I did love it! If only a few more of my fave classic films would get this treatment, like HALLOWEEN and THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (although Gunnar Hansen does have a book out now on the film, maybe this is what we've been waiting for!).FOr DIE HARD 'FRIDAY THE 13th 1980' fans...I surely do recommend this book, though! I'd love to read a book like this on the making of at least each of the first 5 Paramount movies, yep, I'm that obsessed! Bring more on, pleeeeze! Despite some shortcomings, you will not be too disappointed with the content in this book. Sadly, some of the juicier tales that have been touched upon for decades now just don't seem to ever get their full telling!
