Between 2011 and 2014 PJ Harvey and Seamus Murphy set out on a series of journeys together to Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Washington, D.C.. Harvey collected words, Murphy collected pictures, and together they created an extraordinary chronicle of our life and times. The Hollow of the Hand marks the first publication of Harvey's powerful poetry, in conversation with Murphy's indelible images. It is a landmark project and will be published internationally in autumn 2015.
As PJ Harvey says:
'Gathering information from secondary sources felt too far removed for what I was trying to write about. I wanted to smell the air, feel the soil and meet the people of the countries I was fascinated with. Following our work on Let England Shake, my friend Seamus Murphy and I agreed to grow a project together lead by our instincts on where we should go.'
Seamus Murphy adds: 'Polly is a writer who loves images and I am a photographer who loves words. Our relationship began a few years ago when she asked me if I would like to take some photographs and make some films for her last album Let England Shake. I was intrigued and the adventure began, now finding another form in this book. It is our look at home and the world.'
The Hollow of the Hand will be available in a hardback edition with highest quality photographic reproductions, as well as a reader's paperback version.

About the Author
PJ Harvey has released eight critically acclaimed albums. She is the only artist to have twice been awarded the Mercury Prize and has been nominated for six Grammy Awards. She also creates visual art and writes poetry. In 2013, she was awarded an MBE for services to music.
Seamus Murphy has documented conflict around the world. His photography from Afghanistan won him the World Understanding Award (POYi) and was published as a book, A Darkness Visible: Afghanistan. Murphy lives in London.

20 of 23 people found the following review helpful. Two quite different editions (Deluxe and Reader's) published simultaneously By Ellen Etc. There are two distinct versions of this book: the "art" version of the book, The Hollow of the Hand: Deluxe Edition, and a simultaneously published, more affordable edition, The Hollow of the Hand: Reader's Edition. Sadly, Amazon's policy is to consolidate reviews, even when the editions are quite different. Check out a classic like "David Copperfield" and see that critical editions with essays and beautifully illustrated editions are lumped together with cheap mass market versions in the reviews. I had hoped to review and rate the editions of this book separately, but, alas, I cannot.The two editions share the same content, but the Deluxe edition is larger and more rectangular, allowing the poems to "float" more on the page. The paper on both books is lightweight and textured; at this price, I do wish the Deluxe edition has been printed on glossy paper. Harvey's poems, which brought my attention to the project in the first place, are more like "snapshots" of particular moments than fully developed poetry. Murphy's photographs show day-to-day life in an unvarnished, insightful way. A more knowledgeable friend of mine who flipped through the Deluxe edition was impressed with the artistry of the photographs.As a coffee table book for fans of PJ Harvey or Seamus Murphy, the Deluxe edition is a treat, but for the money, I'd stick with the Reader's Edition.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Greater than the sum of its parts By James Kelly The combination of words and pictures works well here, adding up to more than the sum of the parts. Harvey is a decent, though not exceptional, poet and the visuals make up for some of the weaknesses of her writing. The project captures the daily life of people in these places, particularly those where war has had a huge impact on the routines of life.
