One of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, George Szell led the Cleveland Orchestra from 1946 until his death in 1970. A meticulous perfectionist, Szell was known to be an autocratic taskmaster who wielded total artistic control. Under his leadership he transformed the orchestra into a world class ensemble. Tales From the Locker Room gives a rare, honest, humorous and at times brutal look at this musical genius through first hand interviews, stories, and anecdotes by members of the Cleveland Orchestra who served under him.

Dunlap Very enlightening, often entertaining stories that open windows into the mind of a musical didact who shaped one of the world's great orchestras for nearly half a century. Szell's tremendous genius and his impact on 20th Century music has long been evident to critics and other listeners. This volume, however, goes beyond simple praise to showcase how a master's passion and unflagging demand for quality reached into hearts, minds and souls of his musicians in a way unmatched by Bernstein, Ormandy, Ashkenazy, Toscanini and other great conductors of his era. Angell provides his lay readers the opportunity to peek "into the locker room" and gain insight into the power of great, if sometimes terrifying, direction to form a collective whole that rises above the sum of its individual parts. Bravo, bravissimo.

Some great anecdotes of the laugh out loud kind but many passages are sort of marking time. There is no real continuity and some of the comments are so brief as to be almost meaningless. The book does quote a number of musicians who played under Szell and while there is total respect for his musicianship and conducting brilliance, many are still in thrall of his dictatorial ways, which still grab their psyches a full forty plus years after Szell's death. There is widespread awe of Mark Lipshey's brilliance as an oboist, worshiped by his colleagues, many of whom never really recovered after his departure when he couldn't take Szell's barbs any more. All feel Szell changed their musical lives forever - and for the better. In sum, for the Szell completist and for those who know/knew many of the players who were in the orchestra "second to none" during the time it was created.

Haub Anyone interested in the Golden Age of conducting, and this legendary conductor in particular will enjoy this quick, easy read. It's entertaining and enlightening. The book could certainly have used the sharp eye and critical pencil of a good editor. "Coronet" several times. It's David Oistrakh, not Oistrach. There are other errors. But it still serves as a useful and interesting book to read along with Charry's more forgiving biography. Musicians and non will enjoy it.
