Episode 6 is my All-Time Favorite Radio Show By Bill Anderson Length: 2 hours 41 minutes.I have been listening to the Powder River series since I first stumbled upon the production at the Colonial Radio Theater web site. I have loved each and every season, including the three spin-offs: Guns of Powder River, Mountain of Gold, and Morgan's Town.Indeed, I am such a fan of PR that, when Sirius XM discontinued Book Radio (on which CRT series frequently aired) I let my subscription lapse. Fully 80% of my time tuning into Sirius was devoted to Book Radio and/or Radio Classics. You would think after some 120 episodes, the writer might run short of ideas or slip into a repetition, but not Jerry Robbins. He waits until you get settled into a comfy listening mode then throws a new curve at you. What I mean, and bear in mind I do not give spoilers in my reviews, is that Robbins is in that class of writers who knows that powerful writing comes when you're willing to kill your darlings or write of those deep, dark secrets you work so hard to keep hidden from the world. Then, just when you least expect it, the guy does something that totally worms its way into your subconscious. Well, for me anyway. The last episode in Season 10, Volume 1, astounded me so that I teared up just as if I was again reading, or listening to, Old Yeller or Shane. For me, at least, this episode, while based on fictional characters, was so compelling that I felt as though these characters were actually representative of people who actually did exist. I know it is an odd statement, but, spiritually, I do feel connected with the four people drawn by Robbins. That genius is what marks this writer as gifted.Of all the episodes I have thus far listened to, the concluding episode of this volume is not only my favorite, it is by far the best writing and production I have ever witnessed. That should be viewed as especially noteworthy, for I have the entire Jimmy Stewart series, Six-Shooter, and most all episodes of Dragnet, Gunsmoke, plus several dozen other Radio Classics radio shows. The only avocations I find more enjoyable than audio theater is reading or listening to audiobooks, or, traipsing out among nature on the prairies, in the mountains, or in the deserts.Normally, when experiencing fiction, one either is able to suspend disbelief or the story is a failure. There are no other options. With this latest Powder River production, however, we go beyond suspending disbelief. We approach that other-world status and travel back and forward through time.Although it is not absolutely necessary to listen to all the other seasons before Season 10, it is highly recommended. My one regret is that I cannot give this volume a rating higher than 5 stars.

I started listening and could not stop until all the episodes were listened to. The Colonial Radio Theater continues to do a great job with their stories that seem to come to life. Thank you for all the wonderful years and stories.

Many Wisconsin voters glossed over Scott Walker's first book, Unintimidated. They wanted more insight into what made him tick on a political level.

For the first time, listeners are offered a sequel to his previous book, as the governor explains how he made the transition from being unintimidated to being uninhibited.

As the very tight governor's race grabs headlines in Wisconsin, it's important for voters to know why he is running again and what sort of competition Mary Burke can expect in November 2014.

This classic Western story takes place on a cattle ranch. When a mysterious stranger comes walking into town seeking employment at the Cross-Triangle Ranch, life changes for these simple country folk. The stranger goes by the name Honorable Patches, and throughout the book his tumultuous past and his intentions for coming out West are revealed. Patches is put to the test many times by the other employees, including the caretaker, Phil Acton, and the owner, Dean Baldwin. As Patches continues to prove his worth, the ranch employees learn the importance of a natural life and its role in what it means to be a man.

Harold Bell Wright (1872-1944) was a Disciples of Christ minister. He traveled extensively and wrote about the goodness of mankind. After authoring That Printer of Udell's - a book that inspired Ronald Reagan - he wrote The Shepherd of the Hills, which has sold more than one million copies. Wright's ongoing battle with tuberculosis led him to settle in Imperial Valley, California, where he wrote The Winning of Barbara Worth. The following books are published by Pelican as a set: A Harold Bell Wright Trilogy: The Shepherd of the Hills, The Calling of Dan Matthews, and God and the Grocery Man.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Can't Buy Me Love By Lee Armstrong Harold Bell Wright was a popular writer. The advertising at the back of this 1916 edition boasts that nearly seven million of his books had sold, which I assume was big business. "When A Man's A Man" is set in Arizona among ranchers. A city slicker wanders onto the scene and searches out the Cross-Triangle Ranch. Not knowing how to ride a horse, he walks, which several passers-by point to as unusual behavior. He meets the foreman of the ranch, Phil Acton, who he then asks for a job so that he can learn how to be a man. Asked his name, he quickly stumbles for an answer and names himself "Honorable Patches." The romantic storyline has Phil's love for Katy Reid who has been to college, comes home and dismisses Phil as a cowpuncher. As the story unwinds, we have numerous episodes of Patches learning how to rope, shoot and excel at all aspects that show he is truly a man's man. There is also the wrinkle of the gang at the Tailholt Ranch who go around trying to steal the other ranchers' calves that wander the open range. Yavapai Joe is an interesting character, a weak easily dominated follower of the abusive Nick Cambert from Tailholt. About two-thirds of the way through the book, the mysterious identity of Patches is revealed as is his romantic past. After 93 years, the book is a quick read from what seems a more simple time. Wright's themes that money can't buy love and that intellectual snobbery does not indicate depth of spirit ring true today. Enjoy!

Real Men Read Harold Bell Wright By Steven Fantina With its testosterone-sounding title, one might expect this book to be a tale of priaptic exploits. But when realizing it's from the pen of master scribe Harold Bell Wright-once described as "the apostle of the wholesome" a more realistic plot comes to mind. This enjoyable adventure does take place on a ranch and pays apt tribute to the cowboy way but it is as unadulterated as the prairie sky over the Arizona mesa where its action commences. The tale of an overly cultured gentleman who escapes to the untamed Southwest in an effort to become a true man lacks the trappings of modern tales of machismo. Rather it details the meatamorphasis of a citified plebian who follows his heart and embraces true responsibility, probity, and duty. Along the way he osculates the exciting episodes found in HBW's books and is influenced by the genuine characters who populate his oeuvre. It seems every move that Mr. Wright ever made yielded a vibrant novel and fortunately his pereginrations took him far and wide. Few litterateurs have possessed a gift as keen as his in terms of creating a written diorama. When the book's action takes place at the rodeo, readers feel an impulse to get out of the way of charging steers. When Honorable Patches (a character's spur-of-the-moment pseudonym that sticks) gets into a fight, we duck his punches as a tropism. And in a later chapter as a careening car heads toward a trapped child, many readers will need to pause and catch an escaped breath.A hagiography was published about Mr. Wright that bore the natural title "Storyteller to America." He conveyed the rudimentary as magical and invited readers to take part in daring quests from the safety of our easy chairs. "When a Man's A Man" is another one of his books that prove a grown-up allegory filled with suspense, romance, and excitement can be as pure as the desert air.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Classic Western Novel By D. W. Miller This book is a classic western novel that prizes moral integrity. It is historically and geographically accurate. The ranch headquarters portrayed in the novel is today the headquarters of the Las Vegas Ranch in Williamson Valley just outside Prescott, AZ.

"A peculiar thing happens to people after they turn forty; inhibitions fall away faster than hair follicles. Self-discovery becomes the rage, and formerly sane people run out to get tattoos, climb mountains, and traverse the country by motorcyle. The search for our hidden selves may lead to a career change or simply be for our own fulfillment, but one thing's certain: if anyone thought we were crazy at twenty, take a look at us now..." Everyone dreams of finding their soul mate and experiencing the type of timeless love affair that can happen but once in a lifetime. For those that do, it's more than just a relationship, it's The Relationship. Here's one man's story: When a forty-something lifelong bachelor meets his equal in forty-something, Kathy, he finally learns the meaning of love, but this former lone wolf has a lot of catching up to do in the romance department, and it won't come easy! "Sometimes, I went to bed with Brooke Shields and woke up with Burt Reynolds. It was nothing a single blade razor and a shot of Bailey's in my coffee couldn't rectify, but temporarily disconcerting nonetheless." Told in linear fashion, The Relationship humorously chronicles a single couple from first meeting through the distant future, but primarily focuses on a month by month replay of their first year. Equal parts humor and romance, it's a modern romantic comedy and a love story for the ages. To the reader: There are no explicit sex scenes, nor is there foul language. There is pleny of innuendo though, and the book contains adult situations. This is a stand-alone piece, and probably best suited for Gen. X'ers, especially those that found love or are looking for love later in life, although I believe that both young and old will also enjoy it. Please read the sample chapter to get a feel for the story and the characters. Thank you. Rob Semple

“This is deeply personal, classic adventure at its finest. It is also historically important work inside the world of newspaper comics. Above all it is moving and deeply beautiful art illustrating stories of risk, choices, loss and life.” - New York Journal of BooksThree amazing firsts hit the newspaper strip pages in January 1929: the introduction of Buck Rogers as a Sunday, the debut of Edgar Rice Burroughs's Tarzan as a daily strip, and the first newspaper strip art by Hal Foster. It was Foster who illustrated all 60 episodes of ERB's seminal Tarzan of the Apes. And now LOAC Essentials brings you all of Foster's first comics work, reproduced from ERB's syndicate proofs. In addition, this book includes The Return of Tarzan, Beasts of Tarzan, and Son of Tarzan, each drawn by Rex Maxon. All together the first 300 daily Tarzan comics ever produced, all together in a single, affordable package!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Foster's Tarzan is great, the book is good. By Jerry The Foster work is great to see, and the strips were printed from syndicate proofs, so it's likely they're the best reproduction we'll get.But buyers need to know, of the 300 strips included, only the first 60 are by Foster. Maxon getting the majority of the collection is not a fault (it's the reality of the first year), but buyers should be aware. And this is a Maxon collection in more ways than one.Foster drew 5 panels per strip (Maxon only drew 4), and as a result, each Foster strip is reproduced smaller, each panel approximately 2" tall, (each Maxon panel is 2.25" tall). I suspect that is a reduction from the original print size. But whether it is or isn't, isn't the point. The size of the Foster strips is simply too small to do his art justice.2" Is the size Peanuts was printed for years. 2" Works great with a big round headed kid, not so well with Tarzan battling an ape. The Foster panels are beautiful mini illustrations (Foster left the strip because he was so in demand as an illustrator), but because the reproduction is so small, they read like thumbnail sketches. The slightly larger Maxon panels look like he was doing sketchy thumbnails. There is simply more to be seen in the Foster dailies than 2" allows. Times changed and strips changed too, but the size reduction certainly helped kill adventure strips. The format is cutsey, and little more than that. The single strip per page reproduction adds nothing. Let me repeat that:The single strip per page format adds nothing. And the long oblong of a book detracts from ease of use. The long pages attached pull down on the spine. The long pages must also be more carefully handled to prevent folding. This format brings into question the physical longevity of the books themselves, it makes it questionable whether book stores and libraries will want to stock these on open shelves, where accidents will happen (Books have been being printed for 550 years. Does the publisher need to be told that this format isn't going to be well received? Even the comic reprints of the 1960's that used a horizontal format never made the books so long and skinny.)This awkward format is advertised as allowing readers to enjoy the strips as the early newspaper readers did, reading one strip a day. In fact it was the bugaboo of readers that they had to wait to read the next day's strip. Printing daily strips wasn't invented to improve the quality of the strip, it was done to sell papers. To use an advertising technique used to sell papers to package "essential" collections of comics, seems misdirected. If the books were printed three strips a page, I could do the same thing and just read one a day. And if the books were printed 3 per page I'd be able to see more clearly what the artist saw in his studio-- How the dailies interact with each other, and how the story progresses. The paper is soft and off white, very reminiscent of newsprint. That's a plus and a minus. It allows me to see the strips as they might have originally looked, but I'm curious if the paper isn't too thin, too soft (is it acid free?), for the long oblong format.Overall I'm happy with the collection, but mostly because it's the only one I have of these first Foster strips. I'm hoping a larger more essential collection comes along.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Very Rare Tarzan Strips Collected By Stephen Vincent Kempton Thank you Library Of American Comics for this volume. While I have the early Sunday strips in collections from three different publishers , I have yet to find a collection of the dailies. This is a fantastic collection of the very first adventure newspaper comic strip. These strips first appeared over 85 years ago in 1929 and 1930. The original plan was for them to adapt each Tarzan novel separately and sell them each as unique series. The plan included each novel would be adapted over a period of 10 weeks or 60 individual strips. Later in fear of exhausting source material it was decided that they might stretch out continuities past the ten week limit. This volume features the first four novels of Tarzan collected or about a years worth of material. While the Library Of American Comics Essentials was launched with much bravado , I wonder about it's continued success. The wait time between volumes has increased and no future volumes past this seventh have been announced. Also we have gotten two price increases. The list on first volumes was $19.99 , then it was $24.99 , now they are $29.99.Well even at that price I still think they are a perfect format to display an older strip which needs the space. One daily strip to a page is like reading a Hard Cover Collection in which some collector has found pristine original strips and cut out each one and carefully bound them together. The nine page illustrated introduction by Burroughs expert Henry G. Franke III is worth the price of the book alone. He is very insightful and I learned a lot.If I have one complaint with this volume is that it could have been enlarged even more. Each daily was composed of five individual panels each with a paragraph of text under each one. The text is really small by current standards. Just to clarify these early strips just like the Tarzan Sunday's and the Prince Valiant Sunday's feature no word balloons, just text beneath illustrations. Starting with the second novel only 4 panels were used, this made it easier to read. The first adaptation of Tarzan Of The Apes is adapted by Ralph W. Palmer . Palmer in fact adapted all the stories included here. The art was by Hal Foster, who was at the time just another advertisement artist and this was just another assignment. Foster had no realization he would later become the premiere action adventure comic strip artist in the field and it would bring him fame, money and recognition. The 300 panels Hal Foster contributed to the first novel's adaptation are brilliant and rich in details. But since Foster had other advertising work to do another artist was chosen for the second story. The Return Of Tarzan followed after a three month gap. Like the first story it is 60 strips but now a reasonable 4 panels a page. Rex Maxon was the artist selected. If you are familiar with Rex Maxon you have probably have heard stories vilifying him. Poor Rex Maxon was actually a pretty good artist and this volume should rectify that impression. First off he had to follow in the shoes of now legendary Hal Foster and then second because Maxon was not immediately available an artist named Hugh Hutton ghosted the first strips. Burroughs and his artistic son Jack hated these first strips and would spend a lot of time trying to get Maxon removed from both this and the later Sunday Tarzan strips. Neither realizing that their initial impression was based on art that was not even Maxon. The introduction says Maxon tried to correct Hutton's art. The first daily to carry Maxon name was episodes six.Maxon art continued to improve on the third and fourth novels adapted here. It should be noted that from Maxon's start there would be no more three month wait between adaptations. One would finish on a Saturday and come Monday a new adventure would start. With Burroughs permission The Beasts Of Tarzan was 84 dailies while The Son of Tarzan ran 96 dailies. With this volume finished we still have decades full of Tarzan dailies that deserve to be reprinted. I have high hopes for the success of both the LOAC Essentials format and the continuation of Tarzan. My Highest Recommendation.

Illustrated Retelling of First Four Novels By David Swan At 320 pages it probably sounds like a lot of material but given the dimensions of the book I was unsurprised to find but one single strip per page. If Russ Manning is the Omega of Tarzan comics Hal Foster and Rex Maxon are the Alpha. This collection goes all the way back to 1929, the very first Tarzan strips, and it’s quite a bit different from what I had expected regarding content. At the beginning each strip consisted of five 2 1/8” panels that sit above a paragraph of text. There is never any text within the illustrated panel itself. It’s basically an illustrated story rather than a comic strip that most people think of. When Rex Mason takes over in June 1929 he switches to four larger panels but continues to add illustration to a block of text. These are not original stories but are rewritten versions of the first four Tarzan novels including Tarzan, The Return of Tarzan, the Beasts of Tarzan and the Son of Tarzan. I have read all four novels and besides the first they are not among my favorites. Burroughs hit his stride a little bit later in the series and I consider the Beasts of Tarzan and the Son of Tarzan to be two of my least favorites. The art here is extremely rough and I know that Foster and Mason are capable of cleaner images. Part of it may be the antiquity of the drawings and I have to wonder if they are reduced in size. Both Foster and Mason went with a very realistic style which I appreciate. Although rough both artists do an excellent job on drawing animals and forest including an impressive usage of light and shadows. All in all you get a little over a year of comics including complete retellings of the first four novels. I would consider this more of an historically significant collection rather than a source of great enjoyment. This is near the dawn of newspaper comics and the awkward storytelling is more of an artifact of the period although by this point other comics like Gasoline Alley and Popeye and adapted to the comic strip medium much better. As someone who owns the Russ Manning collection and the Tarzan comics of Burne Hogarth I don’t regret getting another take on Tarzan and I think the current price is reasonable for what you get.I’m not deducting a star for this but I really wish Amazon would stop being so damn lazy with their packing. I appreciate the low prices but when you throw a loose book in a box and deliver it hundreds of miles it’s going to get wear on the edges.

By JohnRGT I'm not big on this sort of book anymore because so much info, pics and videos are available on the www. But the subtitle got me. I assumed evo would tap into their massive talent and experience base and provide us with the sort of insight only time behind the wheel of such cars can enable. Best Ebook American Boy: The Class of '69, by Al Haeger

American Boy, The Class of '69 chronicles the true life adventures of a young man coming of age in the midst of the chaos of the Vietnam War. Waking up in a rural cabin deep in the Canadian Northwest, the hero relives the events that led to his nocturnal flight north of the border to escape the draft. Full of fun loving, live for the moment adventure, the saga paints the story of randy male testosterone with a pointed irreverence for the political powers of the day. Al Haeger's breakout novel, it was inspired by his appreciation for the laughter-rich works of Kurt Vonnegut and Tom Robbins.

By Bill Stewart Al Haeger has captured the tangled, twisted and highly emotional times that made up the Class of 69. It is a riveting time capsule that we would all love to step back into, willingly. American Boy had me yearning for that turbulent time of free love, political awakening, spiritual chaos and music that has defined a generation. If you were there, or wanted to be there, this is a must read in the vein of Tom Robbins meets Ken Kesey meets Hunter S. Thompson. It's a gas!!If you have ever wanted to better understand your parents of that generation, this will give you insight as to why they are the way they are! If it didn't really happen, you wouldn't believe it was possible. Karmic Hootenanny!

Central Park is “one of the greatest works of art in America” and it has inspired many of America’s greatest painters. Among the major figures who have depicted the park’s landscapes and activities are Bellows, Chase, Glackens, Hassam, Henri, Hopper, Prendergast, and Sloan, as well as living artists like Christo and Estes. Their work shows early views of the park in construction, its major landmarks, the evolving vistas of the cityscape, and the park’s human element—scenes of crowds at play and people in solitary contemplation. Painting Central Park provides a rich and varied visual history of this urban oasis, reflecting much of the American social experience in the quintessential American park.

Review “A treasure for all those who know the park and an eye-opening experience for those who have yet to discover its wonders. This book can be read many times, and as with the park, new treasures will always be found.” (Library Journal, starred review)“Central Park has inspired so many painters over the years and bringing them together in this beautiful book is a brilliant way to tell the story of this iconic space. . . . If you love New York, American history or landscapes, Painting Central Park is a treat.” (From the Right Bank blog)“Finally there is a new book that depicts my real backyard. It’s by Roger Pasquier, a lifelong New Yorker who has done a distinguished job—including going through decades of American painting auction catalogs in the library of the Metropolitan Museum of Art—of tracking down works of the park. . . . The accompanying text is almost as illuminating as the art. I knew I was going to enjoy the book as soon as I saw its cover.” (The Wall Street Journal)“A book sure to further enchant anyone who has ever enjoyed the multifarious charms of Central Park. . . . It is an engaging study of the way artists have seen and represented the beloved park, touching on social history, landscape architecture, and city planning while also celebrating the endurance of New York’s foremost living monument.” (The New Criterion)

About the Author Roger F. Pasquier was born in New York City and grew up playing in Central Park. He studied art history at Columbia and the University of California, Berkeley. A lifelong birdwatcher, Pasquier spends hours in the park all through the year. He has written several books on birds and one combining his interests in birds and art, Masterpieces of Bird Art: 700 Years of Ornithological Illustration. Amanda Burden is the former director of the New York City Department of City Planning and chair of the City Planning Commission.

If you've ever loved Central Park you must see this book By Miles Chapin An artistic overview of one of our most treasured works of public art; New York's Central Park as seen through the eyes, and by the hands, of a multitude of America's greatest painters. PDF Ebook The Record Store of the Mind, by Josh Rosenthal

"Josh Rosenthal is a record man’s record man. He is also a musician's record man. He is in the line of Samuel Charters and Harry Smith. In this age where we have access to everything and know the value of nothing, musicians need people like Josh to hear them when no one else can.”  T Bone Burnett

Grammy-nominated producer and Tompkins Square label founder Josh Rosenthal presents his first book, The Record Store of the Mind. Part memoir, part “music criticism”, the author ruminates over unsung musical heroes, reflects on thirty years of toil and fandom in the music business, and shamelessly lists some of the LPs in his record collection. Crackling with insightful untold stories, The Record Store of the Mind will surely delight and inspire passionate music lovers … especially those who have spent way too many hours in record stores.

Celebrating ten years in 2015, Rosenthal’s San Francisco-based independent record label Tompkins Square has received seven Grammy nominations and wide acclaim for its diverse catalog of new and archival recordings.

By Stuart Jefferson This book has already been reviewed but it's so good I had to say something--but I'll keep it short.Of all the recent books about music/musicians, Josh Rosenthal's book is one of the best. It's obvious he's a deep fan of music and the recorded album. His writing style makes you feel like you're having a friendly sit-down conversation about music and albums from someone with a real feel for his subject(s). But not just any musicians/albums--these are (for the most part) albums made by relatively/totally unknown people. Sometimes a larger label issues their work, sometimes they appear on small/self-released labels you've never heard of. But no matter.Rosenthal's view is pretty wide--taking in all sorts of genres. But along with shining a light on albums we've probably never heard he also writes about musicians like Harvey Mandel, or Eric Clapton, Alex Chilton, or The Youngbloods and their Raccoon Records--but not in the usual way we've all come to expect. And that's what makes this book so interesting and good. There's a chapter on a number of acoustic guitar players, that unless you're a fan of that music, you might not know of. Included are players like George Cromarty, Harry Taussig (his album, "Fate Is Only Once" is pretty fantastic), Steve Mann (who influenced Jorma Kaukonen who recorded "Pride Of Mann"), Mark Fosson (his first album is for Fahey fans), and a number of others like Robbie Basho, Peter Walker, Michael Chapman, and Sandy Bull, all who gained some notoriety in the guitar world. But known or not, Rosenthal writes succinctly and intelligently about each one. There's a chapter devoted to jazz that's equally interesting--bringing in several jazz musicians and albums worth knowing about like Andrew Hill, Mal Waldron, Charles Gayle, Giuseppi Logan, and others worth hearing, plus Rosenthal's Uncle Moe who influenced his jazz tastes. Plus chapters devoted to people like Charlie Louvin, Smoke Dawson, Bill Fay, and Mickey Jupp. Fay has gotten some publicity in the last few years with his albums, but when was the last time you heard anything about Jupp? He also includes a chapter titled "Start A Label If...", that's pretty funny and enlightening. And that's just a small look at what's here.Along with all the albums and players the author also includes asides on his own life and how it connects to music. His warm, organic style of writing makes this book both interesting and a joy to read. Plus you'll come away with some good information on some pretty interesting people and their album(s). This is far from a dry treatise on musicians and music genres. It's a book about perhaps lesser known artists and albums with a nice dose of personal observations from the author woven into the text and in later chapters--"1989-1997", and "Gigs"--which includes a list of ticket stubs from shows the author attended.I was pleasantly surprised at just how much I liked this book. Get a copy for yourself and give one to a music loving friend. And if you're really into music don't be surprised if you find yourself hunting for albums you come across in the book.

Funny and thoughtful music memories By Paul The owner of an independent record label reminisces about some of his favorite musicians, mostly those he’s worked with and reissued on his label. There’s some intriguing stories about how he meets them or is introduced to them, and if you follow on his website he’s got a playlist of the songs he mentions. After the first chapter I have to say this author’s musical tastes are way different than mine. He talks about modern singer-songwriters lacking “authenticity,” whatever that means, but so far I find his selections lacking spirit. He calls his choices “simple” like it’s a good thing. Our tastes in vocals also differ. It’s different when he’s talking about more famous people, the first—getting his own chapter—being Eric Clapton. He makes Syosset, Long Island with Billy Joel and Lou Reed sound like Jersey must’ve been with Springsteen. There’s also a piece on his friendship with Judd Apatow. Throughout the book I had to keep reminding myself that I wasn’t going to review his music picks; just because his taste is different than mine, especially in vocalists, didn’t mean this isn’t a great book full of reminiscences about real musicians, those who make music rather than a spectacle on stage. Still, I had been hoping to make some discoveries, but since I didn’t, I forced myself to concentrate on thinking of this as a biography. For instance, there’s a hilarious note about the author with a musician visiting a dilapidated venue where he’d played over 50 years ago. When they see an old bathroom they muse “Elvis likely pissed in there.”There are some chapters at the end that might be better described as appendixes. When he’s talking about concerts he’d attended and reached the indie part, I was hopeful he might mention some I knew; didn’t happen. I did find some commonality on more famous acts we’ve both seen live, like Rush, The Police, Tom Petty, and U2. And I happen to be wearing an Alice in Chains shirt when he mentions working with them. . . There’s a great chapter at the end on why you should—really shouldn’t—have your own label. He’s also a huge proponent of naps.3.5 pushed up to 4/5

A Wonderful Read from a Man Who Knows By Amazon Customer I've always had great encounters with Josh, but never knew the extent of his musical knowledge and background. It was really nice to dig into his world more. This is a wonderful read from so many perspectives. He's lived an amazing and fulfilling musical life and gives it to the public through his record label, which is one of the most diverse out there, and through this book.

From School Library Journal Grade 6 Up?To most modern kids, classics may be great, worthy, even exciting stories, but they were written in and for their own times and the context can sometimes be obscure. Using the visually irresistible printing techniques popularized by the "Eyewitness" series, these two books, when prominently displayed, will probably attract more impulse readers than some of the dustier editions. But do they accomplish their stated aim? Direct textual illustration is plentiful, lively, and useful. The reproductions of prints, photographs, and maps that pepper each page and are intended to enhance readers' grasp of the times, however, are a mixed success. There is a sameness to them and an arbitrary feel to their use. Pirate buffs will find Treasure Island's variety of ship drawings, details of sailing minutiae, and photographs of pieces of eight or guns and swords quite satisfying. Verne's work is less enhanced by its graphics. This episodic travelogue would be best served by lots of clear maps with the route well marked. But the few maps shown are so small that the legends are unreadable and country and city names are blurred. Limitations aside, the initial appeal of this fresh approach may serve to attract some new readers to these enduring stories that have managed without any help for this long.?Sally Margolis, formerly at Deerfield Public Library, ILCopyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews Around The World In Eighty Days ($23.99; $15.99 paper; May 1996; 296 pp.; 0- 670-86917-1; paper 0-670-86793-4): An entry in The Whole Story series, this is an annotated edition of the 1873 classic, printed on coated stock and enhanced by both atmospheric new paintings and hundreds of postage-stampsized 19th-century photos and prints. The explanatory captions (credited to Jean-Pierre Verdet only on the copyright page) accompanying the latter are largely superfluous, although they do add random snippets of historical background to the journey. It's the views of old ships and trains, of costumed natives, and distant ports of call--from Port Said to San Francisco--that evoke the tale's panorama of the exotic, just as the many lurid Verne trading cards and other spinoffs capture the plot's melodramatic highlights. A good way to put both book and story in context for young armchair travelers. (Fiction. 11-15) -- Copyright ©1996, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Review Praise for Classic Starts™: “The books have won the praise of a number of educators. Peggy Charren, a visiting scholar at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, an advocate for higher-quality children’s media, and a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, said she has read several {and states}’they’re terrific.’”—The Wall Street Journal. “Where abridgements are useful in introducing literature to grade-schoolers not equipped to handle the real thing, books in this series will fill the bill.”—Booklist.  “Large print, short chapters, and an abundance of white space provide an attractive, more-accessible option for readers who are not ready to handle the originals.”—School Library Journal  “Even those who dislike adaptations will find much to admire in this retelling…”—School Library Journal (for The Adventures of Tom Sawyer) “This…retelling will be appreciated by readers not yet ready for the original work.”—School Library Journal (for Anne of Green Gables).

The story features the height of late 1800 steam technology and a couple of heros who want to circumnavigate the earth in 80 days to win a bet. The characters are surprisingly likable and the action is just GREAT. Put this at the top of the queue for great free reads and you will get a wonderful easy read and a brilliant view of the world.

McDonnell The story is about an eccentric Englishman named Phileas Fogg who makes a twenty thousand pound bet with five of his rich country club friends to travel around the world in eighty days with his trusty servant Passepartout a Frenchman. Along the way they have to overcome many obstacles. Fogg spends most of his fortune overcoming these obstacles and if they don't win the bet he will be ruined. There are some things however that even money can't overcome and several times Fogg is faced with a moral decision that if he pursues the right thing to do will significantly set him back on time.Their travels take them through England, Paris, the Suez Canal, Egypt, India, Hong Kong, Japan, America, and Ireland. In India they rescue a princess who stays on with them throughout the rest of their journey and a love interest grows between her and Fogg. There is also another subplot involving a bank robbery in England where 55 thousand pounds have been stolen, and Fogg is considered to be the main suspect. A detective Fix is assigned to follow Fogg and to arrest him once he sets foot on English territory. This book seems to be split into two parts. During the first part of the book when things are going smoothly the servant Passepartout seems to be the main character. At each port Fogg stays in his cabin and just focuses on the next leg of the trip while Passepartout ventures out and gives you a description of the land. It would seem a shame to travel all around the world and not pause to take in any of the sights as Fogg does. I found most of these early chapters pretty mundane and uneventful. The subplot with Fix at times becomes annoying, and it isn't until they are all working towards the same goal, that this line of the story improves. I also found the exchange rate between dollars and pounds confusing at times. The pound must have been about four or five times greater than the dollar at the time this story was written. Fogg leaves England with around twenty thousand pounds and spends it seems over a hundred thousand dollars on the trip.Later on as the story progresses and things start to go wrong the focus changes over to Fogg. Passepartout still does some heroic things, but Fogg takes charge and shows some redeeming qualities. The pace of the story quickens and becomes more enjoyable with a few skirmishes taking place in India and America. Fogg seems a different person upon returning to England, and his life is changed forever. My wife has a framed poster that hangs on one of our walls with a collage of all of the movies that have won the best picture of the year award. "Around The World In Eighty Days" won the award in 1956, and the picture is represented in the collage with the main character Phileas Fogg and his trusty servant Passepartout taking a balloon flight. Based on this picture for years I always assumed the book was about a trip in a balloon around the world. I was surprised then to find out once I finally got a chance to read the actual book that they travel by boat, train, car, sled, and even elephant, but that they never travel by balloon. It turns out that the most memorable scene from the movie was made up by the director and added on to the story. The director seemed to have come to same conclusion that I did, that the written story itself was very good, but I was expecting something a little more. The book was written in 1873. Jules Verne the author is a Frenchman. In this day and age it was pleasing to see both England and America looked upon in such a favorable light. Englishmen were portrayed as noble and Americans were portrayed as wild and adventurous.

This book is about a man named Mr. Phileas Fogg, and his faithful servant, Passepartout, that wager a bet that They can travel the whole world in eighty days stopping at Suez via Mont Cenis and Brindisi, then to Bombay, then Calcutta, Hong Kong, Japan (Yokohama), San Francisco, New York, back to London, all within eighty days, and by steamboats, and trains. However, a nosy detective, Detective Fix, tracks them down, and tries to arrest Mr. Fogg because he believes that Fogg stole fifty-five thousand pounds. As one may guess, this greatly detains Mr. Fogg, and it seems like he may not make the trip around the world after all. However, the Fix never seems to catch up with Fogg, and Fogg triumphs over most of the obstacles that come his way, like missing boats, missing trains, missing people, and Fogg even meets and rescues a beautiful Indian Princess called Aouda. However, Fix finally catches up to the detective, and everything seems lost for Fogg until Fix discovers that Fogg was not the robber, and Fogg is released. Even so, Fogg is one day late, and in doing so, misses the train that would have taken him to London precisely to win the bet. He ordered a special train, but even in doing so, still misses the bet...or so he thinks. The ending of the book is a very unexpected one. Read this book and find out!
