Steal billions. Satisfy your every desire. Wreck the lives of millions. Never see the inside of a jail cell. It used to be a pretty good life ... in finance. Entire floors worth of corrupt investment bankers and hedge fund managers are being wiped out, one gore-spattered evening at a time. A costumed serial killer, known only to herself as The Figure, has begun pushing back with crowbars, claw hammers, and whatever else is at hand. What The Figure held was a two-foot length of six-inch pipe. On one end, there was ring after ring of lug nuts, soldered on to add weight and bulk. Poking out from between the rings were blades taken from short carving knives that had, in turn, several fishing hooks welded on in all the right places to up the odds of them catching something. The whole thing had been spray-painted matte black, as if for greater contrast with the fluids it would be freeing. Waking up in a hospital bed after The Figure rendered most of his workforce extinct, investment magnate Gerald Byrne finds himself blind. Worse yet, his father, Derek Kruger, The Nightmare on Wall Street, is urging retaliation against the madwoman. "She'll really prevent you from achieving your goals if she returns to finish what she started." Kruger put his hands back on Gerald's shoulders for emphasis. "Far as I know it wasn't anything specifically targeting you, but you should really consider slowing down and-" "I'm not going to sit around waiting for the change I want in the world to just happen." Gerald added, tossing off Kruger's hands, "She certainly isn't!" After a lifetime of anxiety-ridden mental health, Mary has begun waking up feeling calmer, more self-assured, and just plain able to breathe. She was able to get that job at a junkyard and might even ask out that good-looking barista, maybe. She doesn't know why and doesn't care to work it out; the benefits are too welcome to risk scaring away with questions. Questions like "Why are my muscles sore as if I've been jogging all night?" "Where did these cuts and bruises come from?" or even "Why is there a lock on my bathroom cupboard that I don't know the combination to?" It was that moment where realizing you're in a dream is the thing that wakes you up, pulling you toward consciousness. Mary was drawn to the surface as if her body had all of a sudden been strapped with several life preservers. No matter how hard she fought this, she came closer and closer until- The media have been told to keep quiet by their revolution-fearing owners. But they can only do so much as the ripple effects of the Figure's actions draw the attention of police, private security, would-be copycats and conspiracy theorists; some wanting to stop her, some wanting to join her, and all speculating on what motivates this mysterious murderer. Mary? Just a costumed killer butchering bushels of bankers. She only wants to be happy.

Brackenbury's concept in this book is interesting -- and somewhat cathartic. This book is fun and easy to read, but more cerebral than your average thriller. A great introduction to Brackenbury's work.

Looking forward to diving into this.If this is your first exposure to Oliver's work, take a chance. At this price, he's practically giving it away.
