A mammalian monologue By The Diesel-Electric Elephant Company Actually performing the act of reading A Reptile Dysfunction is a short-lived experience in the way that watching one of the old Cunard liners sail swiftly past is a short-lived experience when undertaken in salty rags from a small desert island. ‘Oh look – there’s a ship...’ just doesn’t cover it. Similarly, ‘oh look – it’s a collection of five short-stories’ doesn’t express the breadth of the experience, the depth of the ideas or the mass tonnage of the political, sociological, existential and simply funny notions in the collection. With both experiences what you have seen is not a ship or a book, but another id. I saw an id that looked worryingly similar to my own, an id floating past and every bit as lost and as found as I imagine myself to be.In A.R.D., A.D. cocks a snook at human parochialism, sums up the absurdity of partisan politics, kicks causality and the paradoxical consequences of time-travel to one side like a football and ends on a note of deliciously bleak and reassuring realism regarding life, death and everything.In the very best, most positive sense, this cameo collection is a book that sheep would enjoy if sheep were in the habit of reading, because, rather like green grass, you may rip it up in a lunchtime but the real enjoyment comes in then chewing the thoughtful cud all afternoon. Baa, yep – he’s right, you know, he’s not wrong. Baa, aha, yes, that about covers it as I see it too. Baa, that sounds plausible to me. Baa, I can identify with that notion... At just twenty pennies a pop I recommend that you splurge, find a comfortable spot and then chew each story at least thirty-six times.The author’s style is highly approachable and easy on the fore-lobes, the formatting is without error and the spelling and grammar are of the “A+ See me” variety. There are a couple of Anglo-Saxon expletives in the narrative, but only a couple and this scarcity restores their power and position very nicely indeed.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. ~~Five short stories~~ By Off Grid..and Loving it! Five short stories comprise this book with quite the variety of subjects. There are two that are about politics; one involving time travel; one in which a comedian dies on stage and one which features a new hire at Monkeyworld.I enjoyed all of them but with the political climate heating up in the US, I found the two about politics in the UK refreshing. Yes, most refreshing.Nice short read that will make one laugh. Doesn't get much better than that, does it?Highly recommended.
