Mike Brearley is one of the most successful cricket captains of all time, and, in 1981, he captained the England team to the momentous Ashes series victory against Australia. In The Art of Captaincy, his treatise on leadership and motivation, he draws directly on his experience of man-managing a team, which included a pugnacious Ian Botham and Geoffrey Boycott, to explain what it takes to be a leader on and off the field. Giving an insight into both his tactical understanding of the game, as well as how to get a group of individuals playing as a team in order to get the best out of them, The Art of Captaincy is a classic handbook on how to generate, nurture and inspire success. With a new introduction by former England player and BBC commentator Ed Smith, to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of its first publication, The Art of Captaincy remains urgently relevant for cricket fans and business leaders alike. Covering the ability to use intuition, resourcefulness, clear-headedness and the importance of empathy as a means of achieving shared goals, Brearley's seminal account of captaincy is both the ultimate blueprint for creating a winning mind set, but also shows how the lessons in the sporting arena can be applied to any walk of personal and professional life.

Excellent insight into cricket captaincy By A Customer I don't have much to compare against (as it is the only cricket-related book I've read), but it makes an excellent read. Most of Brearley's arguments are based on sound logic, and he relates some pretty interesting anecdotes to back it up. A lot of these are however from English county cricket, and many readers may not be able to relate to them. The book is still a very compelling read and I would highly recommend it to anyone who's involved in playing the game, or interested in reading about it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Dying Art ? By tommy g What strikes readers of Brearley's treatise on captaining a cricket side is its relevance so long after it was written. Though it deals with a dying era of wildly eccentric English cricketers the likes of which we will never see again (Close, Dexter, Underwood, Cowdrey et.al) and the golden era of county cricket that professional sport finally replaced, his thought's on the game still hold as true as the day he penned them. Captaincy is still all of the things Brearley discusses and very little he doesn't. Even his predictions seem to be by a man who had seen the future. His discussion of the new trend of 'sledging,' the over aggressive nature of the modern players and his distaste for them seem more than justified today. With England coming to realise in recent times that a side will only be as good as the commitment the team shows, leadership becomes ever more prized. Recent sides have rallyed round a strong leader and become greater than the sum of parts because of it. That having been said, it is Brearley's point that the Australian's have always selected a team and then picked a captain from amongst them that seems to reveal a much deeper issue for the English game. Afterall, Brearley only averaged just above 20 for his country, yet still had a safe pair of hands in the field, something the present side still lacks. It is no coincidence that the Australian side fields as well as its best does. Ponting just happens to be the player the selector's picked to captain. In the end Brearley makes the point clear that a captain leads by example, certainly thought needs to behind his actions but his deeds stir the team to act.The Art of Captaincy points to strength of conviction, always back the hunch style cricket that the Australian game has always played, as the key to sucess. England are still looking to get back that sense of belief that deserted them somewhere in the summer of 1989. Reading this book only helps to remind us of a time when England were Kings. Surely they must rise again?

Muir Although this book will be primarily of interest to cricketers, it's a mistake to regard it just as a cricket book. Brearley's profession enables him to write authoritatively on captaincy as one aspect of the broader skills of leadership and motivation. Anyone interested in management would find this book as helpful as any of the reference works available on the subject.Brearley was one of the finest captains I have seen in over 50 years of watching cricket. Richie Benaud and Imran Khan, in different ways, were as successful in lifting their teams to great performances, but they were both great cricketers in their own right. Brearley was the weakest player in the side for most of his career as a test captain and the success of the team when he was leading it is testament to how important leadership is.Thoroughly recommended. I wish he'd write an autobiography!

By jessicahkiefer As with every Amazon writer I've never heard of or read a book by, I read this free book with hope and a grain of salt. Hope that I would find a new author to enjoy and a grain of salt to give me patience when I see what this author has done to her "book". This first offering or free part is 46 pages, an average amount of pages to get the reader interested in buying the rest of the book. But, buyer beware!!!!! This book is a rip off in the most sneakiest of ways...let me break it down for you, my fellow readers, what this author has done....She wrote a book and split it into 7 parts. If you take the seven parts in this series and add the total pages together you get 368 pages... all for the price of 18.00 dollars by the time you pay 2.99 a part for six parts, remember the first bit is free. I looked at actual "publishing house" published authors works of the same page number and the average cost for their books was $6.99. Those authors are on the New York Times best selling books pages and have won awards for their writings. Why is their work only 6.99 a book and this authors books are 18.00 for the same amount of pages? Why? Because this author cheats her fans. It is highway robbery to pay 2.99 for 48 to 56 pages of writing and if you buy this story, that's exactly what you'll be doing!!!! And to top it all off...The free bit of this story was lacking and predictable, the characters flat and unimaginable. Definitely not worth 18.00 dollars!!!!!! We need to support the authors who give us a great read at a reasonable price point and not this type of telemarketer sales ploy. You know the one, "We'll give you a diamond bracelet free if you sign up for a four year contract with our company." Sound familiar? It should...This author gives you the first few chapters free then charges you 2.99 for the other six parts. My book club, ninety six women, are boycotting this author for this type of marketing on Amazon. We as readers deserve fair treatment and honest business practices, this isn't it my fellow readers. No story is worth this amount!!!! Food for thought... Terminator 3, a new movie release with tons of computer animation involved in the making, just came out on DVD this week at Walmart... its cost was $19.99. This book costs $18.00 dollars......Hmmmmm.... you decide.

Sophie is one of twelve human women who have been kidnapped and taken to Wolf Island to partake in a ceremony that pairs them with a werewolf mate. Erik Greenwood is the only son of the ruling house of the werewolves. He had declined partaking in the ritual however by as of yet unrevealed ways he was chosen as Sophie's mate.I found Sophie to be a strong, smart, protective, capable woman with a good head on her shoulders. I liked that she put the welfare and safety of others above herself. Erik I thought was a selfish, arrogant but sexy hot jerk. However we haven't really learned anything about him so I'm sure he will become more likable as the story plays out. I loved the secondary character of George. He seems like he will be a fun character in the series.I enjoyed the book and look forward to the nest one. I recommend this book to all paranormal and shifter lovers.Received ARC copyL.

It's obvious the author is passionate about the plant too. A much needed book that helps point to the necessity for a paradigm shift in cannabis. Hopefully this author will write more.

The ultimate critical biography of the King of Pop: a panoramic, vivid, and incisive portrait of Michael Jackson that explores and celebrates his influence in music, dance, and popular culture, drawing on 400 interviews. From the moment in 1965 when he first stepped on stage with his brothers at a local talent show in Gary, Indiana, Michael Jackson was destined to become the undisputed King of Pop. In a career spanning four decades, Jackson became a global icon, selling over 400 million albums, earning thirteen Grammy awards, and spinning dance moves that captivated the world. Songs like “Billie Jean” and “Black and White” altered our national discussion of race and equality, and Jackson’s signature aesthetic, from the single white glove to the moonwalk, defined a generation. Despite years of scandal and controversy, Jackson’s ultimate legacy will always be his music. Rolling Stone contributing editor Steve Knopper delves deeply into Michael Jackson’s music and talent. From the artist’s early days with the Jackson 5, to his stratospheric success as a solo artist, to “Beat It” and “Thriller,” “Bad” and “The Man in the Mirror,” to his volatile final years, his attempted comeback, and untimely death, Knopper explores the beguiling and often contradictory forces that fueled Michael Jackson’s genius. Drawing on an amazing 400 interviews—ranging from Jackson’s relatives, friends, and key record executives to celebrities like will.i.am and Weird Al Yankovic—this critical biography puts all the elements of his career into perspective, and celebrates his triumph in art and music. This is a rare and panoramic view into the genius and influence of an incomparable talent.

MJ: The Genius of Michael Jackson, by Steve Knopper

Review “Veteran journalist Steve Knopper balances the musical and the personal, packing the 400 pages of The Genius of Michael Jackson with fascinating anecdotes, covering every stage of the singer’s career in vivid detail….The section on Jackson’s childhood is especially gripping….an authoritative account of a world-changing force of nature.” (Rolling Stone)"Steve Knopper has done something very difficult: He's written a fair-minded, musically comprehensive biography of the weirdest superstar in pop history. This is the clearest, most objective portrait of Jackson I've read." (Chuck Klosterman)"A rich and thorough examination of one of music's most riveting, mystifying, incandescent figures. Steve Knopper brings insight and clarity to the chaos of Michael Jackson's tragic final years, but—maybe more importantly—fleshes out the powerful and brilliant performances that transfixed the world." (Alan Light, author of "Let's Go Crazy: Prince and the Making of Purple Rain")"Tracing Jackson's life and career, from his upbringing in Gary, Indiana, to the Jackson 5, solo fame, and through his death, [Steve Knopper] reveals a complicated, workaholic, tortured, sensitive soul, a peerless performer... Knopper writes with verve not only about the music business, but also about music and performance." (Kirkus Reviews)"Very powerful." (Booklist starred review)"The first narrative biography to deconstruct Jackson's inimitable dance steps, live performances, songwriting method and studio sessions in fine detail." (RollingStone.com)"A fascinating account of the tortured artist’s tumultuous life that will be an invaluable resource to music historians and fans alike." (Publishers Weekly)"Knopper rewards readers with surprising, apt, and copious details...Knopper handles his prodigious subject with a reporter’s imperative of impartiality but a music fan’s spirit of appreciation." (Boulder Daily Camera)"Reminds us why Michael Jackson was, indeed, a 'genius' entertainer." (Newsday)"A book on Jackson that treats him fairly and shows his life wasn't black and white." (Examiner.com)"More than rehash the well-known arc of the dysfunctional Jackson clan, Knopper targets the details that turned a child star into the King of Pop." (5280: The Denver Magazine)"Amazing." (Maxim.com)"Superb... [a] fascinating, fair-minded account of Jackson's dazzling rise to the pinnacle of pop music and his ignominious fall. We learn the backstory of the moonwalk, the military jackets, white socks, glove, plastic surgery, skin whitening and more, all of it scrupulously documented with multiple sources." (Associated Press)"The definitive Jackson biography." (The Denver Post)“Steve Knopper is on a rescue mission: To restore Michael Jackson’s legacy as a significant artist….Through reminiscences and observations Knopper gathers from more than 400 interviews, MJ deftly recounts the familiar aspects of the story…Knopper shows similar critical and reportorial savvy in assessing Jackson’s creative peaks and valleys….Among the book’s many answers that can’t be questioned is the resonating impact of Jackson’s boundary-shattering talent.” (USA Today)“Extensive interviews with the multitudes who crossed Jackson’s path, from record executives to studio personnel to video directors, set Knopper’s effort apart, and the portrayal shies away from sensationalism. What emerges is a thoughtful look at an artist who grew up in a segregated mill town and who, for the rest of his life, made music to bring down walls.” (Chicago Tribune)"[Knopper] takes a journalist's approach to the story, chronicling M. J.’s journey from a working-class family, in Gary, Indiana, to unequalled fame and riches." (NewYorker.com)“Michael Jackson’s story is well known, but journalist Steve Knopper’s meticulously researched book avoids sensationalism and hyperbole to create a rich, fair-minded portrait of Jackson and his unique artistry.” (Buzzfeed)

PROLOGUE

The trouble began when a janitor forgot to unlock the auditorium doors at Emerson High School, in Gary, Indiana, on September 26, 1927. A crowd gathered in the hallway and waited for first period to begin. Then two African-American students walked by. A white kid blurted out: “Let’s get out of here until they get rid of the niggers.” Within hours, six hundred white Emerson students, some on the football team, were parading down the streets of northern Gary, chanting, “Strike! Strike! Strike!” and “We won’t go back until Emerson’s white!” Strikers in cars drove in circles, honking horns, disturbing the peace, frightening passersby. The local Post-Tribune sensationalized the crisis, printing bold headlines: ‘E’ STRIKERS VOTE TO REMAIN ‘OUT.’ It seems William A. Wirt, the superintendent who had run the Gary schools since the city had opened for business twenty years earlier, had miscalculated. Before the semester began, he realized Gary’s black schools didn’t have enough space to accommodate the three thousand African-American students enrolled in the fall, so he relocated fifty of them to a handful of white schools. Emerson received eighteen. (It wasn’t Emerson’s first influx of black students, but school officials had carefully screened the few earlier kids for what they considered high intelligence, good manners, and light skin, so as not to attract too much attention.) The superintendent insisted segregation did not belong in Gary, but he took no action against the strikers. The students’ ringleader, Winfield “Junior” Eshelman, was a member of the swim team who wore a blue-and-white athletic sweater and calmly delivered his demands to the press and school officials. “The strikers are firm in their belief that a colored line must be drawn, and Emerson made a white school,” Eshelman said. Facing mayoral pressure to resolve the problem, Wirt and Gary’s city council compromised. They granted the strikers “excused absences.” They transferred fifteen of the eighteen black students to temporary schools. They set up a temporary school facility for blacks with $15,000 in city money. And they agreed to allocate $600,000 to build a permanent all-black school, far away from Emerson. The Post-Tribune was euphoric: STRIKE OFF; ALL HAPPY. Gary, Indiana, had not been built for African-Americans. Once a region of swampy marshland and sandy dunes, Gary’s location on the lower shore of Lake Michigan attracted oil and steel companies at the turn of the twentieth century. In 1907, oilmen bought nine thousand acres of land and announced plans to spend $65 million on massive plants. U.S. Steel would provide living quarters for loyal workers. The steel giant’s Gary Land Company built 506 houses and quickly added more, but at fourteen dollars per month, even the cheapest homes were too expensive for the mill workers, who made 16.7 cents an hour. By 1911, overcrowding was a problem. Garbage was everywhere. Barely born, Gary was quickly segregating into two cities, for rich and poor. The former, on the north side, contained tony establishments such as the Binzenhof pub and the Hotel Gary. The latter would attract two hundred saloons over three years, with names like Jack Johnson’s Gambling Joint and the Bucket of Blood. Executives and skilled workers called this southern part of town the Patch, or the Other Gary. The all-black Roosevelt High School, created from segregation, opened in the heart of the Other Gary on April 19, 1931. Eighteen years later, across a narrow alley from Roosevelt’s track field, a one-story house would appear on the corner of Jackson Street and West Twenty-Third Avenue. It was roughly thirty feet long and twenty-five feet wide, with ten tall windows, impeccable white siding, and a brick chimney at the top. The address was 2300 Jackson Street. Within a couple of years, Joseph Jackson, a construction worker, would use his savings and some money from his new wife’s stepfather to buy the tiny house, as well as a refrigerator, a stove, and a bed. Joseph and Katherine would raise nine children—six boys and three girls. The oldest boy would play baseball for Roosevelt High. He and four of his brothers would sing “My Girl” at a talent show in the Roosevelt auditorium. One of the youngest brothers would spin around and around and around, mesmerizing the audience. *  *  * Years later, Michael Jackson argued with Rupert Wainwright, director of one of his short films—a teaser video for the HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book 1 album. Michael wanted to display a four-hundred-foot statue of himself in the film. Wainwright gently pushed back: “Some people might think it’s slightly vainglorious,” the British director told him. They went back and forth. “Verbal fisticuffs,” is how Wainwright describes it. He assured MJ he’d be happier if the image were abstract, as opposed to the King of Pop celebrating his own legend. Michael disagreed. It had been thirty years since Michael had been the kid from the segregated Gary neighborhood who’d barely seen Chicago, much less the rest of the world. He’d spent his first five or six years on the planet with nothing but walls and boundaries, and by 1995 he wanted no limits at all. He refused to let race, gender, musical styles, family, even his own facial structure constrict him. Every time somebody tried to define him, he literally shifted his shape, altering his music, his clothes, his image, his nose. On albums, he wanted sounds that had never been made before. He wanted to sell more records than any musician, ever. He could heal the world, make it a better place, comfort the sick, save the environment, bring the children into his home, turn their fears and anxieties into joy. “With These Words,” he wrote in the liner notes to HIStory, “I Lovingly Dedicate This Album Of My Music To All The Children Of The World.” The capital letters were not vainglorious. They were just how Michael Jackson thought. He was bigger than the world, and he used his powers for good. Why not a four-hundred-foot statue? Jackson told Wainwright the statue wasn’t so much a representation of himself as it was a “symbol of music.” Wainwright said that was worse than a statue. Michael called him dumb. Wainwright said maybe he was. How many records had Wainwright sold? “You have lots of statues where you’re from,” Michael finally told the director. “I live in LA,” Wainwright said, confused. “In England, you have statues. You have statues of that woman all over the place.” “Which woman?” “The queen.”

The author conveys almost no sense of the genius of Michael Jackson, despite the book's subtitle, and virtually nothing of his personality. The author interviewed over 400 minor players in Jackson's life and none of the major players. The result is accounts of petty rivalries between studio technicians, gripes from record company executives about cost over-runs in the making of albums and short films, and other stories that say little about Jackson. The author also consistently views Jackson's actions in a negative light, where there is easily another interpretation to be made. For example, the high cost of some of the short films he portrays as the indulgence of a spoiled rock star, rather than the perfectionism of an artist whose results, in the end, justified the cost. The author fails to take a fresh look at Jackson, falling back instead upon the by now tired view of Jackson as a weirdo who is beyond understanding. The writing has a hurried feel, as if the author didn't fully consider what he was writing. Some of the sentences were puzzling, needing further explanation, and some of the facts were wrong. One day a good, or even great, biography of Michael Jackson will be written, but this ain't it.

This book is NOT By Laurie Solomon I have read EVERY book ever written about Michael Jackson. Ninety-nine percent are worthless. Several have been written since he died and are very good. This book is NOT.The title is very misleading and really the only reason I bought it. It implies that Knopper will focus on Michael Jackson's GENIUS. He doesn't. Instead he fills the books with "anecdotes" about Michael's "weirdness" as if we haven't gotten enough of that from the tabloid (and mainstream) media for years now. Almost everything in the book was taken straight from other books written about MJ. I felt that the author does not like Michael Jackson. And that he took every opportunity to diminish his talents and again, just focus on stupid, irrelevant and mostly NOT ACCURATE so-called "incidents" involving Michael being strange.Mr. Knopper we all know that MJ was a genius. There is so much to say about that. Why didn't you focus on that and why did you mislead us with that title? I found that very offensive and if there was a way to contact you and give you a piece of my mind trust me I would. Please don't do this again. Fans and even non-fans deserve the TRUTH about Michael Jackson. There was very little of that in your book. Nice try.

As such l have to read every new book l can find on the man. That's why l read The Genius of Michael Jackson by Steve Knopper. Ironically Jackson's genius is not explored in the book. A psychological profile and examination of his talent is null. It's a misleading title and It's a stretch to call the book The Genius of Michael Jackson when it only raises questions. It's based on the things producers and other people in the industry have to say about him. It clearly doesn't delve into Michael Jackson's story you think it would.Sometimes it seems an inordinate amount of time is spent on an event or detail that would seem relatively minor. By comparison, some content that you'd think would have more weight is only covered sporadically. For instance it's 1984 on page 152 and a mere 10 pages later it's almost 1988. Don't you think more happened during Michael Jackson's life during the years 1985-87 than comparisons to Prince? The author apparently doesn't think so other than a few demos made during this time for the Bad album. I feel there was a lot more to be told about Michael and the author didn't care or research this specific time period. It starts with a passable depiction of Joe Jackson's story and Michael's childhood. From then on the book is written in chronological order. The obvious problem with the book is it doesn't tell us anything we don't know, it merely retells the story in different words. It'll add interesting quotes from people who but very little else. There's no new insight or perspective. It doesn't paint a picture, it doesn't distinguish itself. Other books have done a far better job years ago, making this one look like the unimportant manuscript that it is. The book seems big but you have to consider there is literally 50 pages of sources and lengthy index. Why does the book fail? It treads on old ground and offers nothing new. The post death part felt rushed. An incredible amount of books have been written about Michael Jackson, especially following his death in 2009. Some of them are worth reading and have an angle that makes them worth reading (the financially driven Michael Jackson lnc. for instance). This one is not. I won't go as far as giving it one star, l think some amount of work went into it. It's a passable but forgettable biography with a few interesting quotes. However, there is no clear focus and lot of of content is stories from other books (no wonder the source/reference list is so big). It's unoriginal and any hype this book might have had is not worth it. 2 stars.

Steal billions. Satisfy your every desire. Wreck the lives of millions. Never see the inside of a jail cell. It used to be a pretty good life ... in finance. Entire floors worth of corrupt investment bankers and hedge fund managers are being wiped out, one gore-spattered evening at a time. A costumed serial killer, known only to herself as The Figure, has begun pushing back with crowbars, claw hammers, and whatever else is at hand. What The Figure held was a two-foot length of six-inch pipe. On one end, there was ring after ring of lug nuts, soldered on to add weight and bulk. Poking out from between the rings were blades taken from short carving knives that had, in turn, several fishing hooks welded on in all the right places to up the odds of them catching something. The whole thing had been spray-painted matte black, as if for greater contrast with the fluids it would be freeing. Waking up in a hospital bed after The Figure rendered most of his workforce extinct, investment magnate Gerald Byrne finds himself blind. Worse yet, his father, Derek Kruger, The Nightmare on Wall Street, is urging retaliation against the madwoman. "She'll really prevent you from achieving your goals if she returns to finish what she started." Kruger put his hands back on Gerald's shoulders for emphasis. "Far as I know it wasn't anything specifically targeting you, but you should really consider slowing down and-" "I'm not going to sit around waiting for the change I want in the world to just happen." Gerald added, tossing off Kruger's hands, "She certainly isn't!" After a lifetime of anxiety-ridden mental health, Mary has begun waking up feeling calmer, more self-assured, and just plain able to breathe. She was able to get that job at a junkyard and might even ask out that good-looking barista, maybe. She doesn't know why and doesn't care to work it out; the benefits are too welcome to risk scaring away with questions. Questions like "Why are my muscles sore as if I've been jogging all night?" "Where did these cuts and bruises come from?" or even "Why is there a lock on my bathroom cupboard that I don't know the combination to?" It was that moment where realizing you're in a dream is the thing that wakes you up, pulling you toward consciousness. Mary was drawn to the surface as if her body had all of a sudden been strapped with several life preservers. No matter how hard she fought this, she came closer and closer until- The media have been told to keep quiet by their revolution-fearing owners. But they can only do so much as the ripple effects of the Figure's actions draw the attention of police, private security, would-be copycats and conspiracy theorists; some wanting to stop her, some wanting to join her, and all speculating on what motivates this mysterious murderer. Mary? Just a costumed killer butchering bushels of bankers. She only wants to be happy.

Brackenbury's concept in this book is interesting -- and somewhat cathartic. This book is fun and easy to read, but more cerebral than your average thriller. A great introduction to Brackenbury's work.

I bought this small calendar for my cramped cubicle at work and it fits perfectly. My only complaint is that it doesn't show a preview of the future month down at the bottom like most calendars do. It would be really helpful for work but I have a computer right in front of me too so it's not a huge deal. The shoes pics it has are so cute and unique. This would be a great gift for the shoe lover in your life

It also has picture breakdowns of all the steps, but unlike the Anatomy for Comics, it touches on more advanced techniques.Manga is the Japanese style of comic books, and they tend to exaggerate their features and actions, creating drama and tension by looks alone. In this book, Stan teaches us how to draw the exaggerated features of the manga, showing us the difference between the distorted features and the traditional features. He teaches us how to make the traditional manga eyes and hair, two of the most recognized features of a manga character. Within this book, you will also learn about draping clothing, creating defining poses, and the difference a little motion will make. There is even a section on scenery, and how to best utilize the foreground, middle ground and backgrounds of your manga scene. As someone with no drawing skills at all, I was pleasantly surprised at how easy these guides were to follow! The steps were very easy to follow, and I believe that anyone looking to draw manga characters could benefit form this book!

By Grady Harp Stan Bendis Kutcher has created an exceptionally complete drawing book that may be focused on artists who create `manga, but is so well written and filled with a plethora of visual diagrams that it could just as easily be a textbook for basic figure drawing classes in art schools. As Kutcher introduces his book, `Manga is in essence comic art or characters done in Japanese way and style. Anime is the sequential `animation' of imagery which would include many of these eastern Japanese stylistic elements found in manga. Unlike more traditional western comic art and animation, manga and anime have many characteristics in common which consistently makes the style recognizable. In manga the backgrounds are often more luscious and realistic wile the actual figure may at times be more stylized. But comic art is the goal here and Kutcher states that goal well: `Comic art or sequential art is a means to capture a sequence or moment in time by telling a story. The aim of this book is to advance your understanding of anatomy so that your overall quality will improve in both the short and long term.' From that statement of definition of this art form Kutcher proceeds to share the materials needed for creating manga drawing and form that point the lessons are on!He divides his book into chapters that slowly advance the reader form the materials to the completed drawing: Drawing Materials - Drawing Manga Eyes, Drawing The Nose, Drawing The Mouth, Drawing The Ears, Dynamic Manga Hair, Drawing The Complete Head, Facial Expressions, Drawing Hands, Body Proportion Basics, The Basics Of Clothing And Drapery, How Perspective Works, The Essence Of Backgrounds, and Putting It All Together - Start To Finish. The illustrations of each phase are very clear and easy to decipher and understand, and as usual Kutcher is a fine teacher. And in addition, the non-student will discover the intricacies of manga and enhance the pleasure of seeing the secrets behind the magic. Grady Harp, April 14

Best PDF Ebook Talking $hit, by Penny L. Samms

Talking $hit is a comedic book that combines booze and food pairings with anecdotal stories about booze and food pairings, relationships, observations, and general stream of consciousness thoughts. The gift for someone who has everything. Perfect for people who have reached a certain age but have managed to maintain a certain level of immaturity. Bad language and general gibberish are common themes and this book fits on every coffee table, in every trailer and cottage, and especially, on the back of everyone's toilet. This book has not been edited. Nor will it ever be. If you are the type of person who offends easily, buy this book for someone who doesn't. :D

Spike Lee’s film Bamboozled, released in 2000 to controversy and mixed reviews, follows a frustrated black TV producer on his quest to create a show so offensive it will get him fired. The result is a modern-day minstrel show that, contrary to expectations, becomes a massive hit. A satire of race, media, celebrity, and American history, Bamboozled has conventionally been regarded as one of Lee’s lesser efforts, though it now appears to be one of his most prescient and radical. In this reappraisal of the film for its 15th anniversary, film critic Ashley Clark makes the case for Bamboozled as one of Lee’s most rich and enduring works, and as one of the most important satires of American culture in this young century.

This is essential reading for anyone interested in black film, black history, or America's dark past." - Kaleem Aftab, author of Spike Lee: That's My Story and I'm Sticking to It

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. a critical companion for a tricky film By Amazon Customer "Bamboozled" is a difficult film to watch, to put it mildly. A bourgeois black TV exec (Damon Wayans) pitches a show to his black-appropriating boss (Michael Rappaport) called "The New Millienium Minstrelsy Show." It features black actors blacking up and shucking and jiving (Savion Glover and Tommy Davidson, with the Roots as their backing band), and its surreal, satirical success can only lead to a tragic ending for the film's black characters. It's a 'feel-bad' film, and is largely dismissed as one of Spike Lee's 'interesting failures.' But Clark's close-reading of the film argues that it is prescient and still relevant to black representation in the media today. (Think of "The Help," "12 Years a Slave," and "Precious," to name a few.) I think his book is challenging yet readable, and is immensely helpful for anyone who has seen the film, or is interested in black satire.

Mike Drake has done it again, offering the off-center and oddball with a goodly dose twisted humor!

There are lots of full-page beautiful illustrations, with a wide range of art styles, and some really excellent artists! I wanted to hang some of these pictures on my wall. This is a must-have for any Krampus fan, and anyone who'd like to see the work of new and talented artists.

Beautifully haunting illustration and exquisite tales of many. The story caused goose bumps on both of my arms, yikes! The illustration maybe was the culprit for such a reaction, ahh . . . yep I confirmed it. How can you like something so demonizing but gravitates you to it, hmm . . . Both pictures and story worked well and made me believe and of course caused a reaction. Written well and convincingly, no qualms. I received a free book, winner Goodreads First Read Giveaway. Thank you Darlene Cruz
