Ebook PDF A Special Relationship: Britain Comes to Hollywood and Hollywood Comes to Britain, by Anthony Slide

A Special Relationship provides not only a historical overview of the British in Hollywood, but also a detailed study of the contributions made by American individuals and companies to British cinema from the beginning of the twentieth century onwards. The story begins with Ohio-born Charles Urban who came to London in 1898 and deserves credit for major involvement in the creation of a British film industry. While Ireland was still a part of Britain, the New York–based Kalem Company made films there from 1910 to 1913. British producers realized the importance of American stars, and many actors, beginning with Florence Turner (who was arguably also the first American star), made numerous British films. In the 1920s, such Hollywood stars as Mae Marsh, Betty Blythe, and Dorothy Gish remained active in Britain. In the 1930s, as their careers came to a halt, more than one hundred former American stars made the trip to England, partly as a vacation and partly in the hope of reenergizing their careers.

Chapters discuss American cinematographers at work in Britain in the 1920s and 1930s and the introduction of Technicolor to British films. Diversity is represented by African American performers (most notably Paul Robeson), the Chinese American star Anna May Wong, along with female filmmakers from Hollywood. With Britain’s declaration of war on Germany, there were Americans who stayed, such as Bebe Daniels and Ben Lyon, contributing to the war effort. America became actively involved in British cinema after World War II, with many Hollywood studios producing films there. As the years progressed, the British film industry became an international film industry. The book concludes with the Harry Potter and James Bond series, indicative of a new international cinema, with financing and behind-the-camera talent coming from the United States, but with British locales and British stars.

This deluxe, oversized monograph offers the most comprehensive collection of British photographer Richard Learoyd's (born 1966) color studio images to date--mostly portraits, but also including a handful of exquisite still lifes. The color images are made with one of the most antiquarian of photographic processes: the camera obscura, literally translated from Latin as "dark room." Learoyd has created a room-sized camera in which the Cibachrome photographic paper is exposed. The subject is in the adjacent room, separated by a lens. Light falling on the subject is directly focused onto the photographic paper without an interposing film negative. The result is a perfectly clear, entirely grainless, larger-than-life image. Learoyd's subjects, composed simply and directly, are described with the thinnest plane of focus, recreating and exaggerating the way that the human eye perceives; the images recall Dutch Master paintings in tone and composition. This volume includes more than 150 images, reproduced with the utmost care to capture the luminosity of the originals. It also includes an artist statement by Learoyd; a statement by Nancy Gryspeerdt, one of his subjects; and a text by Martin Barnes, curator of the first solo exhibition of the artist's work at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Huge book, beautiful production, lacks editing. By nerose Huge book from Richard Learoyd, and quite an impressive production, which must have been subsidized heavily to be for sale at this price. Seems to have every image he ever made in it, which is one sense is great, but in another, a failure of editing. Clearly nobody is saying 'No' or 'Enough'! Mr Learoyd has perfected a dream of photographers: immaculately detailed direct from camera unique color prints, without negative or film. The prints are amazing artifacts of light, emulsion and chemistry - truly wonderful and alluring. He has made the most of his exceptional craftsmanship, but the big question is what he does with this wondrous technique. However, transferring this to a printed book is hard, as that quality is largely lost, and we see content more than form. So far that 'content' amounts to a lot of alluring young ladies, often naked or lightly clothed, with the odd male and not so successful still life thrown in. (Note the red 'Belly Band' placed high on the cover to blindfold the young lady '50 Shades of Grey' style. Cheap.) I'll happily keep this book, but wonder where he's going to take this exquisite technique to say something powerful about the the inner life of human beings.

LARRY J. DUNLAP DELIVERS A FAST-MOVING, romance-filled memoir of a young singer and his friends search for success in the 1960s music business of California and Las Vegas - if you liked memoirs from Carly Simon, Keith Richards, Patti Smith, Tommy James, and "The Wrecking Crew," you're sure to enjoy Night People."Instead of sharing a life with the woman I'd expected to be married to forever, my friends and I shared a dressing room, divided by thin wallboard, with a covey of topless showgirls and dancers."In 1965, when Larry's scattered-to-the-winds, Indianapolis rock and roll vocal group is improbably reunited in distant San Francisco, they barely survive their clumsy transformation into entertainers in a rock and roll nightclub band. As their fortunes change, Larry and his band are plunged headfirst into an adventure that lures them into mob-run nightclubs, Las Vegas showrooms and backrooms, famous Hollywood night spots and recording studios, celebrity managers, and passionate romance--and the sacrifices it demands. It's the West Coast in the mid-Sixties: a historic era of tectonic cultural, political, musical, and sexual upheaval--and the draft. The band scrambles to overcome, or at least endure, every obstacle in its path. But in the tumultuous nights the band inhabits, where things and people are too easily found and lost, everything Larry thought he knew about life, love, and himself is being challenged.PRAISE FOR NIGHT PEOPLE"Dunlap's sense of transcendence is similar to the sensation Keith Richards describes in his memoir, 'Life: ' ...you leave the planet for a while...' Dunlap is an incredibly entertaining biography that reads like fiction. Who wouldn't get lost in a real-life story that comes across more like a movie script (this should be a movie script)? The storyline is not so far-fetched that you can't fathom that any of this took place, though. In fact, it has the perfect balance of excitement because you know this all happened, yet it's not rehashed stories and scenarios that make you lose interest. This book is authentic....the real deal. Larry Dunlap has a way of turning written words into actual emotions, feelings and passions from that period in time. I do love music and history from this era, so it was even more hypnotizing to immerse into a book that talked of the hits and groups that were filling radio speakers at the time. But, aside from being drawn to those parts of the book, the extreme detail regarding relationship dynamics, the Vietnam war and all of the emotions that charged that era--it all made me unable to stop thinking about and wanting to read more about the book. It's not a traditional coming-of-age story, yet that theme is peppered throughout the book, and woven throughout various stages of many lives that Larry is part of, including his own, of course. What I found equally intriguing was the tale of Mr. Dunlap's rock-and-roll career, from the eyes of someone who had a small taste of mild success, but never climbing the charts as he'd hoped. I have read many biographies from musicians, particularly from this time period, and for some reason, hearing such a detailed account from someone whose "happy ending" I wasn't already aware of was absolutely fascinating. This is how the "other" bands lived during that era. This is how it impacted their families, their choices and their futures. One final piece of praise: I received an ARC (Advanced Readers Copy) of this book, which can mean the book is plagued with typos and, at times, still unorganized, as it's going through final edits yet. Night People was better written than some final copies of books I've read, and edited nearly flawlessly, which pleased the grammar nerd in me to no end.I cannot wait to read the next part of this story, the second book, that Larry Dunlap has promised to release. Do yourself a favor and grab this read. You'll find yourself looking up band names, smiling, laughing, worried about outcomes and people, and wanting more. Larry J. Dunlap may have been a fantastic singer and performer, but he was meant to be an author. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Rock Your Summer Reading By Thw Wood Elf Things We Lost in the Night (Book 1 of Night People), A Memoir of Love and Music in the 60s with STARK NAKED and the CAR THIEVES by Larry J Dunlap took me spiraling back to my youth in Indianapolis in the 1960s. Dunlap and I are connected through North Methodist, where he sang in the adult choir while I wore the children’s robes, and through North Central High School, where he sang for Don Martin and graduated 9 years before I did.Memoir is a difficult genre, but Dunlap avoids the pitfalls of tedium and pitiful life excuses by giving us a compelling story, told in the engaging voice of a reflective narrator. His dialogue and scene structure give genuine depth and detail. We come to know the boys in the band and the girls that flit in and out of the flame around them.Dunlap builds suspense with a plot rich in the twisting reality of life on the road for a 60s rock band. He invites the reader in, and before we realize it, we find that we care very much about these boys, their families, their lovers, their rivals, and their success. This is a memoir that reads like a novel. The ultimate test of a writer’s achievement is the feeling within when the final page is turned. I closed the book with a sigh of contentment, knowing that there will be a Book 2 soon. This story brings the 1950s and 1960s culture to life. I recommend it as a great destination for summer reading.

It's a riveting time capsule of four young men in a home-grown Indianapolis vocal group desperate to catch a toehold in a land where dreams can become reality. Overcoming homelessness and inexperience, the author and his friends transform themselves into a rock and roll band barely good enough to survive in scruffy dives in San Francisco's East Bay. Surrounded by danger and temptations, they shoulder a punishing schedule the author calls 'a crucible to toughen and discipline us into pros.''Stark Naked and the Car Thieves' roll into high gear at the height of San Francisco's naughty-but-nice, Paris-style topless phenomena in mid-60s North Beach. For a year they star in a mob-owned nightclub filled with unforgettable characters and experiences. In nearby Haight-Ashbury, ground zero to the Hippie Generation, Dunlap shows us a 'A tie-dyed circus of hallucinogens,' where artists like The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, rise.We are swept with Dunlap into life at the 'epicenter of the greatest seismic cultural shift of the 20th century'—the sexual revolution: the birth control pill, and evolving social mores that will change America forever, an overarching story of cultural revolution sparking Vietnam war protests, civil rights, and the women's movement. In flashes, Dunlap contrasts his earlier life of discovering a passion for singing, his high school sweetheart, and unexpected passages to young husband, father, and tragic divorce. The band shares Hollywood stages with many of the most popular recording artists and musicians of the era. Discovered by celebrity managers and agents, they alternately suffer and succeed in the machinations of the 1960s music industry. Inexplicably, the band is booked to join a bill of well-known acts to kick off an intimate, state-of-the-art mini-showroom in the new, but already legendary, Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. The four week opening of the new Nero's Nook lounge is the hottest ticket of Las Vegas' 1966 holiday season. And they will be the first rock artists to play a Las Vegas Strip hotel—the catch? perform only ballads and soft pop featuring their vocals, and—under a name chosen by the hotel. What lingers with me is Dunlap's indelible description of the band breaking their constraints, as true artists will, to release their rock and roll ferocity to a crowd of A-List stars. Their reward: resounding ovations that continually bring the audience to its feet. At the final curtain, they stood panting, depleted, jackets rumpled on the stage, ties strewn, dripping wet, engulfed in thunderous applause.Dunlap's sense of transcendence at a moment of achieved excellence is similar to the sensation Keith Richards describes in his memoir, 'Life,'—" ...you leave the planet for a while... ." Reliving his rock and roll years memories in 'Night People,' Larry Dunlap, must have left the planet for a while, too.As their popularity continues to grow in Southern California and other venues, the band's recording career gets underway. Dunlap narrowly avoids induction into the Army, and being shipped to Vietnam, in a harrowing induction center incident. In an endearing scene, Dunlap's father sees his son's group perform for the first time at the famous Pussycat A' Go Go in Las Vegas. This reader was brought to tears and perhaps Dunlap was, too, when in his dad's embrace, his father tells him how much he loves him.As 'Stark Naked and the Car Thieves tumultuous upward climb continues, the author's moving introspections explore desires for love, companionship, family, and the solace he finds in books, his powerful love of music, and abiding love for the band brothers he leads. Recording success seems guaranteed and the author's personal life takes a twist. Readers must wait, however, for the concluding book of this beautifully crafted memoir to discover what the future will hold. It's a wonderful memoir. I loved it, and highly recommend it.Kiana Davenport, author, THE SPY LOVER, SHARK DIALOGUES

By PappaWildcat The concept of authorship in popular music has become paramount since the mid-1980s: Just think of the "Blurred Lines"/Marvin Gaye case or the continued contesting of "Happy Birthday to You" as not in the public domain to cite just two recent examples. But as Moy convincingly shows in this sweeping study, there is more to authorship than who wrote a song: The role interpreters make in a cover version, the distinctive sound space of a studio, the contributions of session players--all are different forms of authorship. What I especially like about this book are the issues it raises and the variety of the examples used. This is a very interesting read for pop music fans, and it would be a great resource for a graduate college course in popular music studies. Very highly recommended.

Think Pink! The Depatie-Freleng Story In 1963, Warner Bros. closed down their long-running cartoon facility that had produced such memorable merrymakers as the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons. Director/producer Friz Freleng and executive David H. DePatie faced unwanted early retirement. A generous parting gesture from a Warner executive allowed Freleng and DePatie to lease the former Warner cartoons studio on California Street in Burbank, complete with equipment and supplies, for a few dollars each year. They teamed up to create animated cartoons for advertising, but not everything behind their enterprise was enchanting. They struggled to keep their small animation studio running against odds and obstacles such as rising costs, heavy competition, outsourcing of labor to other countries, strikes, death, changing directions, and buyouts. They never anticipated how they would soon style a series of cartoon characters that would paint memorable colors over movie animation history. When director Blake Edwards produced The Pink Panther starring David Niven, Peter Sellers, Robert Wagner, Capucine, and Claudia Cardinale, he envisioned a cartoon character of the same name to illustrate the opening credits sequence. Edwards hired Freleng and DePatie, together with artists at their DePatie-Freleng Enterprises studio, to design the animated sequence. The crafty magenta furry feline minced his way into moviegoer’s hearts. The inspiration behind the ink was the people that worked at the DePatie-Freleng Enterprises (DFE) animation studio. Their hilarious cartoons caused a generation of moviegoers to rock theaters with laughter. Author Mark Arnold returns you to the nostalgic memories of the exhilarating Pink Panther series and other cartoons DFE created. Discover the craftsmen behind the cartoons in an exciting exploration of the Pink Panther, Inspector Clouseau, Ant and the Aardvark, Cat in the Hat, The Grinch, The Lorax, Doctor Dolittle, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, Mr. Magoo, The Fantastic Four, Planet of the Apes, Doctor Snuggles, Baggy Pants, The Nitwits, The Barkleys, The Houndcats, The Grump, The Super Six, Super President, Spy Shadow, Hoot Kloot, Blue Racer, Crazylegs Crane, Misterjaw, Tijuana Toads, The Dogfather, The Oddball Couple, Charlie the tuna, David DePatie, Friz Freleng, Blake Edwards, Peter Sellers, and various animators. Over 400 photos and illustrations. Indexed. Appendixes. About the author: Mark Arnold is a comic book and animation historian. He has written for various magazines, including Back Issue, Alter Ego, Hogan’s Alley, Comic Book Artist, and Comic Book Marketplace. He is the author of seven other books, including two about Harvey Comics, two about Cracked magazine, one about TTV (Underdog), one about The Beatles, and one about Disney. Arnold’s efforts help the reader to further connect the dots from Yosemite Sam to the Pink Panther to Spider-Man.” – Bryan Stroud, writer, Back Issue magazine.

A superb book about a classic animation studio By Robert A long overdue tribute to the animation studio founded by executive David DePatie and animation director Friz Freleng. Arnold's work is thorough and well written with multitudes of interviews, artwork, merchandise and everything else related to the studio best known for the Pink Panther--but over the decades they also did many memorable cartoons for theaters and TV (including commercials and specials). They did works inspired by Planet of the Apes, Jaws, All in the Family and the Odd Couple and worked with Bing Crosby, Dr. Seuss, and Flip Wilson. Artist Art Leonardi, music composer Doug Goodwin and Depatie and Freleng themselves offer stories. This is as cool as the Panther himself and readers will find many other great cartoons highlighted here!

An insightful look at the creators of the Pink Panther, Classic Saturday Mornings, and Timeless Specials By Dunestar If you were a child of the Sixties or Seventies, you probably heard about The Pink Panther, but not so much about the creators behind it. Whenever you think of Saturday Morning, you probably think of Warner Bros., Hanna-Barbera, Filmation, Ruby-Spears and Rankin-Bass. But there was also a major contributor to Saturday Mornings which first began their start with theatrical shorts about a rose-coloured feline.Think Pink! The Story of DePatie-Freleng is an intensive look on how David H. DePatie and Friz Freleng established their animation studio and began their success with the Pink Panther as well as other staples within animated television. Mark Arnold gives us a wonderful foray into the people and creators of such works as The Pink Panther, The Houndcats, The Barkleys, Doctor Doolittle, Here Comes The Grump, Timer Specials, The Cat in the Hat and others. As I enjoy reading this book I learned about the successes of DFE and the not so-successful moments such as Super President and Spy Shadow.Currently I'm at the chapter over the most sought after DePatie-Freleng production, Luvcast USA.The funny thing about this show--which was a part of the Saturday Superstar Movie on ABC--was I do recall Ranton Rave who kept setting us up for 'Love Potion No. 9,' and the one episode which stuck out in my memory was the one called, "Moonlight Does The Strangest Thing to Me."Basically it was about two seemingly average boy and girl going out on a date, where everything goes wrong, until the moon comes out and reveals he's a vampire and she's a werewolf (Note: if I'm incorrect, remember I'm going by my child memory, I was about five when it aired). And the hilarious moment was when they were playing the song, the monsters go to the Moon Drive-In Restaurant, and everyone quickly departing and the restaurant closing. But one of the more fascinating articles within the book itself was "A Pink Christmas." Mainly because it was the first time the Pink Panther didn't resort to the typical antics you saw in his theatrical shorts. And it was the first Pink Panther animated tale to be adapted into his comic book form.Basically I recall what made this exciting back then was, this was during the time, 1978, this was before VHS became commonplace, and there was no such thing as DVDs or streaming videos (except possibly for the Jetsons). So if you missed a special back then, you were pretty much SOL (Strictly Out of Luck) and had to wait an entire year to see it again (or by some fortunate miracle, the networks would rerun it for an animated block). So when Gold Key (who had been publishing the Pink Panther comics since 1971) brought out this adaptation, it was real treat because if you missed the animated version, you still had a hard copy to go on.Back then, however, as with most adaptations, there were two subtle differences between the comic and the animated special. (1) As most Pink Panther fans know, though he never talked in the classic cartoons (except for two shorts), as with Tom & Jerry and the Road Runner, the comic version Pink Panther could speak; and (2) Whereas the animated special is based on an O. Henry tale, thus the setting is at the turn of the century, the comic version somehow mysteriously puts the story into the modern times. Though it really never hurt the story itself, because hey, the Pink Panther was just as cool and popular in the comics as his animated shorts, back then it sort of felt a little out-of-place.[Sidenote: Harvey Comics did reprint 'A Pink Christmas,' when they obtained the rights to re-publish the comics during the 90s. So if you have difficulty finding the original print, you can always search there.]Overall, Mark Arnold does an excellent and informative job with the book itself because as I'm reading it, not only do you learn more about the people behind DFE Studios and the characters, but you get to learn about how the classic shows came about and get an insightful look on why we going back to the days of Saturday Morning with a Pink Panther and friends.I definitely recommend picking up Think Pink! The Story of DePatie-Freleng, since I feel it's truly an invaluable component to any animation collector's library.Excellent job on the book, Mark!

The author Mark Arnold has accomplished a wonderful and amazing work of research with it! To put it bluntly, it is just mind boggling to think of the amount of hours he must've spent reading and classifying material for the book! But the end result is truly worth it! Everything, and I do mean everything you wanted to know about the Pink Panther and the DePatie-Freleng studio, is right here at your fingertips. It is nothing short of incredible! Mr. Arnold deserves all kinds of credit for doing the footwork and research for all of us Pink Panther and Depatie-Freleng enthusiasts! It is a reference book to be cherished and consulted time and time again! The book is chockfull of tidbits and never before revealed pieces of information that every fan will undoubtedly relish for many years to come. If you like The Pink Panther, the Inspector, the Ant and the Aardvark, and all the other DePatie-Freleng cartoons, then this book is a must. If you just simply love animation, more so. The book covers everything from comic books, to theatrical cartoons, feature films, TV specials, merchandising, unrealized projects and inside stories on the people who created the cartoons. Lots of pictures illustrate the extensive oeuvre, and a full filmography and bibliography complete this lavish edition. You'll be glad you got it! Think Pink: The Story of DePatie-Freleng

I really want to give this book 5 stars but it doesn't have references and I wish it either did or had a link to the original sources for the material. That being said, what I read here appears to be true. I was aware of some of their listed facts but certainly not all. This is a book for someone who enjoys Jeopardy or trivia games. This is also great for conversation starters, discussion among friends or light reading before bed. It is short and sweet, written in a fun and easy to understand prose I thoroughly enjoyed. And now I think I know why fingers wrinkle in the bath. Without references though, I have a hard time saying I know for sure.

By Kevin Lintner "30 Quirky and Interesting Scientific Facts" could never be accused of having a false or misleading title, because it delivers exactly what it promises. Keydezer offers up facts that are, for the most part, light-hearted and fun. I don't want to give away too much, but I never knew that lobsters didn't die of old age or that human beings used to have four eyelids instead of two. This book would be a fantastic way to introduce younger children to science. (It's never too early!) It would also be great for trivia buffs or trivia hosts to come up with some really obscure questions to stump others. The best kind of learning is the fun kind and this really makes it fun.

However, he can’t deny that the sexy southerner is in over her head when her tycoon cousins try to hire him to make sure Emma doesn’t find out the truth about what really caused her sister’s murderous actions. As they begin to uncover the truth together –and get to know each other intimately – it becomes clear that the more answers they get, the more danger Emma is in. Jace is determined to protect her, but how can he keep her safe when her whole family is in on the conspiracy?

With this being #4 in the series, I'd be hard pressed to say which one I enjoyed the most. All of the books have been a lot of fun to read. That being said, I do think this one was probably my least favorite so far. I felt like this book ended rather abruptly. I didn't feel that way with the first three books. The danger also seems to be increasing with each book. While this isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's notable and makes me wonder what will happen in book 5.Something I'd really like to see is more interplay between characters from past books, as they are all connected somehow (there currently isn't much interplay at all). It'd be nice to see how the previous relationships are progressing, but they are barely mentioned. In other words, this book could maybe be read as a stand alone if you aren't interested in the whole series. The only problem would be the following:The reader never actually finds out who Emma is in danger from. The mystery hangs over the reader's head the whole book, building anticipation, only to let them down at the end. While Dave may be the one doing the dirty deeds, we never find out who his boss is or why they wanted Emma dead in the first place (aside from wanting the USB drive and laptop, which is incredibly vague). The reader never finds out what information on those two devices was so important that it was worth killing someone over. The reader never finds out exactly why Emma is suddenly no longer in danger at the end of the book or anything about what the heck her cousins did to 'fix things'. The reader is left hanging in a way that they haven't been with any of the previous three books. Hopefully book 5 will clarify all of this, but I'm worried it could end up being too little too late.

Enjoyable Read By Amazon Customer in SF I received this book for my honest review. This is the 4th book in the series, and although each is a standalone book, some of the characters from the previous books do appear. This story features Southern debutante, Emma Devereaux, and Jace Lance, security/bodyguard specialist. We also meet Emma's cousins, Luke and Michael, who play a secondary roles, but are crucial to the story line. Others have provided a more thorough synopsis so I won't.go into great detail. The main premise of this book is Emma trying to find insight into why her sister, Joslyn, would attempt to kill Victoria Green, billionaire CEO of a hardware company. She meets Jace by accident, likes him, but later finds out he was present when her sister was arrested. She hires him anyway to help her sleuth out clues. At times, I find Jace's decisions/actions inconsistent with that of a SEAL and security expert, like when he agrees to also work with Emma's cousins, to prevent her from finding out certain information, and especially at the end. I guess because this is an ongoing story line, there are certain events that occur without depth of explanation. I enjoyed the flirty banter between Emma and Jace, and the way Emma confronted her cousins. There were some loose ends that weren't really wrapped up, and the ending seemed rather sudden. I look forward to reading the next book to see how the story progresses.

Faltys As a reader unfamiliar with the Billionaires in the City series I was worried that not reading the previous installments would detract from my enjoyment of this story. I'm happy to report though that this is a fun and flirty read with a nice bit of suspense that can definitely stand on its own.In the aftermath of Joslyn Devaroux's attempted murder of wealthy businesswoman Victoria Green, heiress Emma Devaroux and security specialist Jace Lance are brought together under a veil of deceit that could destroy their burgeoning relationship before it's barely begun. Throw in a bit of suspense courtesy of the machinations of Emma's sister Joslyn and her hired thug David and you have the impetus that binds Jace and Emma together despite her anger at his perceived betrayal. Told in alternating POVs readers are given a glimpse into both of the main character's lives which had me finding them likable and enjoying their increasingly steamy romance.Emma could've lived up to the stereotype of the snobby rich girl but she was anything but. She was determined and strong-willed and gave as good as she got when it came to Jace. With his military background Jace was a loyal man, torn between his initial duty to Victoria and later on to Emma's cousins. Ultimately, as his feelings for Emma grew deeper, he became her champion protecting her from Joslyn's manipulations. Jace and Emma might've started off adversaries but with the danger increasing their interactions became crackling with fun and flirty banter leading to steamy interludes.Overall this was an entertaining story with appealing characters that made for an engaging and suspenseful tale from start to finish. Though there were some plot holes, some silly choices made by characters, and a few unanswered questions at the end, Ms. Crowe's writing style fully immersed me in the story and pulled me along every step of the way. Readers looking for a sexy read with a bit of intrigue will want to add this to their bookshelf.

Toward the end of the twentieth century, science fiction television took a dark turn. Series like The X-Files, Millennium, and Dark Skies wove menacing technologies, paranormal forces, and shadowy government agencies into complex tales of corruption and cover-ups. Mind control, alien abductions, secret government laboratories, and implacable “men in black” moved from the fringes to the mainstream of American culture, making weekly appearances in living rooms everywhere. Other series that played on fears of new technologies—such as virtual reality—set the stage for unfamiliar kinds of exploitation, while Dark Angel offered glimpses of a near-future wasteland devastated by a technological catastrophe. In The Paranormal and the Paranoid: Conspiratorial Science Fiction Television, Aaron John Gulyas explores the themes that permeated and defined science fiction television at the turn of the millennium. The author traces the roots of this phenomenon in an earlier generation of series including The Invaders, Kolchak: The Night Stalker, and Project U.F.O. and examines how changes in the cultural landscape led to the proliferation of these types of shows. This book delves into the internal mythology of shows like The X-Files, resurrects now-forgotten series like Wild Palms and VR.5, and provides an important glimpse into American culture at the close of the twentieth century. While exploring the pervasive grimness of these shows, Gulyas also examines how they offer hope in the form of heroes—like agents Scully and Mulder—who relentlessly dug through the tissue of lies and distortions to find and expose the truth. The Paranormal and the Paranoid will appeal to scholars of media studies, sociology, and science fiction—not to mention fans of these programs and even conspiracy theorists.

Review The book should be a treat for people who love science fiction television series . . . It contains a wealth of facts and interesting contexts. . . .[This book] is recommended for anyone who wants to understand ufomytens [UFOs] development. (UFO-Mail)This book explores a genre of American science fiction television which emerged in the 1990s—that of conspiratorial science fiction. These shows blended traditional science fiction, fantasy, and horror tropes with a strand of cultural thought which became prominent in the 1990s and into the twenty-first century: an assertion that shadowy figures within the US government were responsible for a massive cover-up of the “truth” about a wide variety of things from alien abductions to secret weapons programs.

About the Author Aaron John Gulyas is associate professor of history at Mott Community College, Flint, Michigan, and also serves as a Faculty Technology Consultant for the college’s Center for Teaching and Learning. He is the author of Extraterrestrials and the American Zeitgeist: Alien Contact Tales since the 1950s (2013).

This is a great resource for workshop facilitators and collage artists who are looking for images. The doorway images come from all over the world, mostly India, Italy and Mexico. These photographs can be cut out and used in art journals, collage art, or even as writing prompts. Doorways are symbolic images which open up our imagination. The images are printed on both sides of the page, and most of the doors are double-sided, so when you cut the doors open, the back of the door aligns with the front of the door. You have permission to create your own art with these images and share them online.

A super read By Nicole I found this a very informative read, clearly people are buying this on the basis of thinking it's an official book, which it isn't. It also was one where fans who responded got the chance to have their favourite episodes included. The purposes of a companion/guide book is to include what the episodes are about and to review them. Adding other bits of info if relevant. At least it wasn't "ripped from the Internet" as the other book floating around and was the author's own work. Contrary to the previous review, it was not written by watching DVDs!!!!!!!! Infact the author has been inundated with e-mails full of praise from fans and critics alike.Think people need to understand what these books are about and what they entail before making their comments!
