His poems are wrought of wry wisdom and wonder and an immense spirit that soars beyond the page. Light humor, dark humor, tall tales, short tales, folk tales--he dazzles on a high wire without a net. His words-- acrobats on a trapeze. A risk taker, who mostly leaving himself out of the picture, swings freely, almost invisibly, between the lines as he bonds with that meaningful something-or-other that pulls it all together. With a sense of the ridiculous, the profane and the profound, he is, above all an entertainer. One who imparts meaning with an authentic voice even while engaging us in flights of fancy. His own love of discovery apparent in every verse. In one of the few poems where he makes an appearance, Wild Geese (his"traveling show") he finds himself lifted into the airThen I awakenedWith a sudden shock --I found myself at the head Of the flock. The air my wings strummed With fierce conviction. honked the sacred words Of an ancient benediction.Much of his work smacks of irreverent reverence. Stretching himself as well as the reader between two poles seems an intelligent and practical device to get at some kind of truth. Born in the Bible Belt, reared in Tennessee, his Law of Pie is a slice of down home flavor. In this sphere, pie is squared and only as easy as ,,, for the God-fearing. I went back for a second helping. I was also tickled pink by his Little Piggy Everything Oh, now there secretlyonce stuffed a black kerchiefdown can't tell you's mouth --and who'll ever guesswatched little piggy everything,in waistcoat and trousers, lug that heavy I tell you, with Love's dead bodysnug in a bag of why nots, upstairs where can't tell youwaited in the long, thin darkof a last believe what you wish Some of his offerings are very short, indeed, leaving one with just an impression like the flash of the camera that offers the perfectly framed snapshot. Others beckon you to the dark room where you may find yourself still-- the magic of the image slowly coming to light. Light plays an important role in his work. And, with his musings of shadowy reflections--Spirit held in the balance--one cannot help but wonder about the possibility of an Afterlife.Refelctions in a Full Length Mirror ...And why are we all mysteriously soothed by the emptinessThat swirls around us, behind us, the many scented roomsFilled with flowers and endless permutationsOf tenderness and surfaces flickering,A good portion of ours souls missing, misplaced--A limb taken by surprise, our head lopped off,The disappearance of ourselves entirely,And yet we can see someone there." Of couse, as Slyman's use of metaphor is ever brilliant even the dark is likely to sparkle. He observes his subject from many different perspectives leaning toward the ironic, the paradoxical and eternal. Making use of the unexpected, the non sequitor, he defamiliarizes the reader..rendering the image original and fresh, all of which sparks are own imagination. On occasion his poems shock, sometimes they atonish often they surprise, delight, amuse and endear one. But, always they are imaginative, explorative, insightul departures into other worlds that by their very foreign misadventure and mysterious nature shed new light on just how extraordinary ordinary life is.

In this day of fast, robotic and commercialized literature...lol...well I just want a good giggle. So buy the book. I do not have kindle because I am a damn snob and insist on real books I can hold. But buy all those as well. Love this.

Beautifully written , as though all the poets in history had had a hand in the making of this book.Don't be out off by the presentation. This is not amateur work but great work. Just don't expect to laugh a lot, you'll also weep for humankind and cheer us on.
