"The New World is beautiful thanks to your self-imposed Government. Thank you for being a USER! Remember you MUST use your personal A.I. aka Anicor to be a certified user. Stay tuned for more endless entertainment!" Robert Thorns minimized the screen playing Honky Dory on his i-Top, a device worn on the cornea like a contact lens. He was staring at his audience before standing at the center of the stage, where he would slip into character and become The Actor. He had been entertaining humanity for almost five years and now, at the zenith of his career, had begun doubting the motives of his employer. Rebellion was a new word in his personal dictionary. Something had to change. The New World was wrong. There had to be another way.

By WriteKnight Classic novel, "1984," gets an upgrade for iPhone users in this skillfully inspired quick read. The pages may be slight in this little book, but the impact is mighty. The book is small, but dense and intriguing. And Paul Wunderlich's florid and rich language create an impressively vivid future world. We're uploaded to a world where technology is king, and government is its conniving concubine with the king's ear. The government of Texalifornia uses technology as emotional control to subjugate its citizens to the point that "trying to kill yourself was like trying to steal from the government." Human beings are regarded as lowly as cattle to be fed, maintained and profited off of by the food and medical corporations. In our dystopia, language is superfluous, emotions are literally worn on your sleeves, and thoughts and intentions are transmitted brain to brain like text messages. The parallels between overbearing government control and society's overabundance on technology in "The Actor," and the state of today's affairs are so striking. "We give in ever so lightly to the controlling mechanisms of pleasure," as one character fatally observes.Mindless Consumerism is an overarching theme of the book. Government controlled consumption of food, drinks and entertainment, and even human health, will make any reader think twice the next time they sit down in front of the flat screen to unload their DVR of network TV shows with soft drinks and pre-packaged snacks."5.0 stars - [I'm excited to have won this as a Goodreads First Read – so thanks, Paul!]

Wunderlich, born in Guatemala, is currently in Residency training in Internal Medicine have completed Medical School and electing to specialize. How he finds time to pen such imaginative novels as his debut novel ETERNAL REDEMPTION: DARKNESS WITHIN and now THE ACTOR (DISPOSABLE HEROES TRILOGY BOOK 1) is mind boggling, but he writes so well that the time element is obviously not an issue. His choice of genre of sci-fi, dystopia, and satire – a difficult combination of subjects to stir together, yet Paul succeeds. When asked about his subject choices, Paul replied: ‘It all began when I thought: what if a popular soft-drink/ junk-food chain also owned the pharmaceutical companies that created the medications to treat diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease? It was an idea both brilliant and horrible. It would be dystopia… I then proceeded to think, what if in this world there is also an overwhelming amount of entertainment? Why would anyone want constant distraction? What could you possibly ignore if you’re constantly distracted? Poverty. Crime. Injustice. I then connected both worlds. Distraction through constant entertainment and unlimited sweet food. Wouldn’t that be tormenting? What if, instead of writing about this world from a user’s perspective, I wrote it from the entertainment provider’s point of view. This is how The Actor came to be.’The synopsis of the short book reads, ‘Nuclear winter roars after WW3 left the world in ruins. Protected under a nanobot cloud, a new world order thrives. Its citizens are called users, and each one is heavily monitored by a super intelligent, personal AI. In this dystopian world, people are controlled by endless amounts of sweets and entertainment. The propaganda machine is the stage presence of The Actor. He is famous, wealthy, conflicted and depressed. Arriving at the end of his career, The Actor will strive to "awaken" his followers from the obsessive control of the government. He will find, however, that awakening people from the trance of pleasure will be near impossible.’Paul is able to immediately draw the reader magnetically into his book with the opening paragraphs: ‘A heavily armored scout patrolled the northern borders of Texalifornia, its radar scanning the wastelands beyond. Random radio signals could mean the presence of rebels, who almost always used this old technology after WWIII devastated the earth. The scout was just off the cornfields, at the brink of entering the banshee-like wails of the barren land. Ash. Dust. Death. The world was a petrified carcass, the earth a caked, solid paste of flesh turned into dust, with many a shadow engraved in it after the Great Battle of Atomic Bombs. The sentinel was a full-fledged Mechanized Warrior, a robot the size of a three-story building, with two arms and two legs. Its right shoulder was armed with a missile silo holding sixteen warheads, and its left shoulder held a plasma repeater. A micro-rail gun was equipped in the left arm, and the right arm had powerful claw with which it could either dig deep into the earth to find a buried enemy silo or create a path where stone or dead ships blocked its way. The cockpit was empty, sealed to the main hull. The Mech moved from side to side as it patrolled the border. It continued marching, ever watchful. Each of its steps was accompanied by a heavy thud, shaking the dead earth underneath it: thak, thak, thak while its gears and bolts moved in perfect synchrony.’Try to avoid moving on through this well paced, extraordinarily imaginative story and you most assuredly will find yourself pulled back in. In a situation that could be silly, Paul makes satirically terrifying when you consider the totality of the imagery. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, September 15

Reading and writing are no longer required as all citizens interact with AI to keep them alive and part of the flock. The Actor takes center stage both literally and figuratively as he is the main character - famous with wealth, conflicted and depressed. His high-profile role is about to expire, compelling him to get through to the masses of ignorance and complacency. This short, speculative science fiction story actually has a broad target for readers. Yes, it is Sci-Fi, but it is more about a philosophical position than anything else. Oh, there are NO magical beasts in this dystopian, post-nuclear war setting. UniCorn is the company that provides modified corn-based food for Texalifornia.I didn't connect so much with the characters, but the underlying theme resonated loud and clear. I too can speculate on the future of humanity. With our booming technological advances (and perhaps because I love Sci-Fi), I can see human-tech integration becoming possible in my lifetime and AI becoming a reality in my children's' later years. Not tin-foil or Sky Net thoughts, but the foundation for the potential will come to fruition. So, the position in my personal summary: If humanity had computers to monitor all the import aspects of life (health, education, food, etc) and provide a collective, socialist setting in which entertainment, mindless or otherwise, was provided to occupy the minds and lives of society, would individual thought cease to remain? This was a quick read, but the thoughts should stay with you for quite some time. I enjoyed the theme and setting, but like I said, I really didn't connect with the character.
