4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A fascinating look at the film that tried to destroy cinema By SpiesLLC Casino Royale was called "The film that tried to destroy cinema" by one movie critic, and the insane production elements (5 directors, a legion of screenwriters, a pantheon of stars, a hemorrhaging budget, multiple studios, etc.) give some credence to that statement.Michael Richardson sets out to document the chaos with this well researched and footnoted book, using interviews, previous Bond histories, biographies, US & UK trade publications (Variety, Today's Cinema, etc), magazines, newspapers, fan sites and other media.Richardson's efforts to cover this often neglected and dismissed piece of film history should be applauded. While CR 67 stands far outside the "official" Bond movie canon, the film is entertaining and hilarious, the women are gorgeous, and the music spectacular. Thankfully Richardson does not waste time trying to convince the reader of the film's merits or weaknesses, instead presenting the story as a neutrally as possible.Richardson's digging uncovered all sorts of interesting information, including plenty of fascinating bits about scenes that never made it to the screen (David "Darth Vader" Prowse was originally going to play a gigantic pooh bear??), as well as scenes left on the cutting room floor. The real meat of the book details just how high a price producer Charles Feldman paid with a Faustian bargain to get Peter Sellers to star in the film, and the chaos, heartache, personality clashes and schedule changes that resulted. Quite the cautionary tale.My chief complaint about the book is that there are no photographs. The film featured some of the most gorgeous women in the world, was beautifully shot, and received award nominations for its attractive and intricate costumes - it's such a shame to not showcase those facets. That quibble aside, I highly recommend this look back at the madcap high point of 1960s spy mania.Join the Casino Royale Fun Movement and pick it up today!Charles HelfensteinAuthor of The Making of On Her Majesty's Secret Service and The Making of The Living Daylights
