Excerpt from A New Variorum Edition of Shakespeare: The Tragedie of Anthonie, and CleopatraIt must be a source of gratification to all lovers of Shakespeare that the discussion in regard to the superiority of this or that Text is gradually declining, and that what, in the time of our forebears, was a furious ebullition, is now subsiding into a gentle simmer, whereof the murmur is soothing rather than exciting. It must be acknowledged, however, that the flames burned about certain plays more fiercely than about others. And it was those 'stolne and surreptitious copies,' the Quartos, that supplied the fuel. Undoubtedly, the Quartos have at times yielded valuable assistance, - notably in Hamlet and in Richard the Third, - more emphatically, however, in supplying deficiencies than in elucidating the Text. As to the Text, it is doubtful that any very pronounced superiority can be observed in those plays whereof we have Quartos over those whereof we have none. There have been times, I confess, in this present play, when I have been tempted to sigh for a Quarto; but the sigh has been stifled by the reflection that, in all probability, instead of one point of discussion, we should then have several points, and that there would always be disputants ready to cast up to the Quarto the stigma of its birth and refuse to accept its testimony. Whereof, in scanning the whole horizon, I have concluded that mankind is, in general, happier under the grey authority of the Folio, and of the Folio alone, which is nearer to Shakespeare than a stolen Quarto, and that'Calm pleasures there abide, majestic pains.'In this present play of Anthony and Cleopatra it is the Folio that, I must say happily, furnishes our sole Text. There is, to be sure, an entry in the Stationers' Registers which warrants the supposition that a Quarto, if it did not actually appear, was at least in contemplation.

About the Author KENNETH TREISTER 1-06-2015 Kenneth Treister, FAIA, has spent a lifetime creating art In addition to being an international architect and a Fellow in the American Institute of Architects. He is an accomplished painter, sculptor, photographer, author and lecturer. Kenneth Treister’s art has been exhibited in galleries and fine art museums throughout the world. He is a member of Real Academia de Belles Arts de Sant Jorge, Barcelona, Spain, established in 1849 by Elizabeth II as the Provincial Academy of Fine Arts. He was awarded the Silver Medal and The Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Institute of Architects, Miami and in 2013 the Gold Medal from the American Institute of Architects, Florida, their highest honor. Triester has lectured at Universities in the United States, Chile, China, Israel, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, and Bali to name a few. William Blake was an English poet, painter, and printmaker. Largely unrecognised during his lifetime, Blake is now considered a seminal figure in the history of the poetry and visual arts of the Romantic Age. His prophetic poetry has been said to form "what is in proportion to its merits the least read body of poetry in the English language". His visual artistry led one contemporary art critic to proclaim him "far and away the greatest artist Britain has ever produced". While Blake had a significant role to play in the art and poetry of figures such as Rossetti, it was during the Modernist period that this work began to influence a wider set of writers and artists. William Butler Yeats, who edited an edition of Blake's collected works in 1893, drew on him for poetic and philosophical ideas, while British surrealist art in particular drew on Blake's conceptions of non-mimetic, visionary practice in the painting of artists such as Paul Nash and Graham Sutherland. His poetry came into use by a number of British classical composers such as Benjamin Britten and Ralph Vaughan Williams, who set his works. Blake's thoughts on human nature greatly anticipate and parallel the thinking of the psychoanalyst Carl Jung. In Jung's own words: "Blake a tantalizing study, since he compiled a lot of half or undigested knowledge in his fantasies. According to my ideas they are an artistic production rather than an authentic representation of unconscious processes." Similarly, although less popularly, Diana Hume George claimed that Blake can be seen as a precursor to the ideas of Sigmund Freud.

A Rare Find and Wonderful Discovery By A Customer Never having read any of William Blake's works, I was entranced by this intriguing edition of his satirical fantasy. I was drawn into the story, not only by the text but by the evocative and inspired illustrations and overall rendering of this unfinished piece. Gavin O'Keefe, an illustrator whose work I admire greatly and am familiar with, adds a new dimension to a strange and wonderful text. The overall presentation, decoration and editing makes An Island in the Moon a pleasurable journey into Blake's imaginary world. Well worth the price and a tastefully done small press publication.

38 of 40 people found the following review helpful. The artist is wonderous, the reproductions atrocious. By A. Mirecki I haven't got the book with me so I can't point to the page that truly defines this effort but the painting it obliterates is Ivan the terrible and his son. Here is what they do: First it is important to remember that this is Repin's best known painting, thus it gets a two page spread! On this two page spread there are two margins of about an inch, on each side of the painting. The key point, the focus for the entire painting is the face of Ivan and his son. This focal point is square in the middle of the binding, completely cut from view unless you want to tear the book out of its bindings (not a bad idea). Had they moved the painting off center by... say 3/4s of an inch either left or right they would have had the focal point in view. They could have also made it a one page picture and used close ups to see detail. Unfortunately, it doesn't actually matter because the reproduction is so dull that the blood, yes that is blood, is a rather bland greyish red. I understand that Repin was working from a limited palatte here and that the remainder of the painting is rather bland but not those reds. Now the written portion of this book is well done as far as I have read, so this isn't a complete loss but for good reproductions of Repin's work the wait continues.

Hanson This work covers an area that is neglected by Art historians in most publications, if not all publications, in the United States. The leading Art Historians may mention icon painting in Russia and St. Basil but that is the extent of their coverage.The period of the Wanderers is probably as interesting and revolutionary as is the artistic movement in France with the advent of Impressionism. Ilya Repin was a leading artist in this movement. In simple terms the movement involved social realism. Prior to this movement the Russian Artist had no oppotunity to explore those things that were Russian. The artist now found that there were Russian subjects that demanded their attention. The Western European themes were discarded and Russian genre painting was the aim. The artist now saw beauty in the life of the peasant and in the history of Russia. The author has not just touched on this subject but has in exploring the life of Ilya Repin covered the subject with clarity and verve. It must have been a labor of love.The author has an in depth review of Ilya Repin's life and an extensive collection of the artists work. He paints word pictures that add to the enjoyment of Ilya Repin's masterpieces. The quotes and biographic statements show an in depth study of the life and times of Ilya Repin.One star is lacking because, even though I do crossword puzzles, there were times when I had to go to the dictionary. It is too bad that authors of Art Books try to impress the reader, when in fact they do just the opposite.For any art lover and especially for lovers of realism this book is a must. If the reader is looking for a history of the evolution of Russian painting he or she will not be disappointed in this volume.I am not a critic nor am I an artist, and I certianly do not "want-to-be". I am a person who does enjoy art books and I found this book to be informative, enjoyable and interesting. It is a must on that art lovers shelf.Ilya Repin's experiences with art in the United States which is covered in the latter part of the book will give the reader an idea of why the United States has not seen many works by Russians.If this was a critical review the book would get a big thumbs up.I hope to find a book on Ge that is as well done.

A keystone of Russian Art By Vic Ridgley Westerners have little cultural exposure to Russian art, which is extremely unfortunate since there are several naturalist painters - Aivazovsky, Levitan, Repin and Shishkin come to mind - whose works should be widely known and appreciated for technical execution, even if the viewer is not a particular fan of representational painting. I was introduced to the painters above through a chapter in Paul Johnson's Art: A New History (a 5-star book), and based on the limited samples therein, I set about acquiring one good book on each of them.The specific painting chosen by Johnson to celebrate Repin's skill is "The Return," a dramatic evocation of the family turmoil and shock created by the unexpected release of a political prisoner from a labor camp, and his entrance into the family sitting room. This painting is so compelling that acquiring a Repin book became a high priority. I had especially wanted to see other examples of his work detailing the environment of Russian political repression. After several years of false starts and trying to order books on perpetual back-order, I succeeded in locating this volume, which probably ranks as the definitive Repin book available in English.It is true, as another reviewer stated, that the color reproductions leave something to be desired - and may even be atrocious - but the book showcases Repin's development as a painter, and his historical importance as a member of the Wanderers school. In particular, it demonstrates his mastery of many themes going far beyond the scope of "political repression," which is what Johnson's example and text discussion had led me to expect.My quibble with the book is the dearth of color plates. Given that Repin's oeuvre is so inaccessible to Westerners, the more that could have been stuffed in the book, the better.

By Liz :) ARC for author (first book I've read)Nora Ash you blew me away with the plans for this story.We are first introduced to Kathryn who is at a coffee shop when a robbery happen when one of the robbers asks for a cappuccino this causes Kathryn to look up and almost get herself killed if not for Lightning a superhuman cones to save the day.Meanwhile Kathryn is shocked back with the realisation that she could use Lightning saving them for her blog, as the robbers have finally be dealt with Lightning notices that he is being fixed and starts to talk to Kathryn but when it doesn't go the way she is expecting she decides that she will go as far into depth with her blog about Superhumans and even goes as far as saying that the major could be into more than expected.Lightning turns up later that night to give a warning that she could hurt or even killed if she doesn't stop searching, this gets Kathryn freaked out and she pleads for his help. Lightning decided he will mark her to protect her (or so we think ;) ).A couple of days go by and after talking to her closest friend the previous day who is a reporter Kathryn decides she will do some more searching and goes to another city in St Anthony and here the trouble starts and she gets attacked, as luck would have it (or maybe not) her saviour arrives in the form of The Shade.The Shade is known as the bringer of death and surrender and also the enemy of Lightning.Shocked at being saved by him Kathryn says asks there is anything she can do to pay him back.What will he ask?Will Kathryn accept?What will Kathryn find out?

I enjoyed how tenacious Kathryn is about uncovering secrets about the sups and the mayor. Even when she has two sups telling her to back off and keep her nose clean she is still compelled to keep looking. Her first article got her claimed by Lightning and then she got claimed by The Shade when she went looking again. I enjoyed how dangerous The Shade is, such a skilled killer and a very passionate lover. I enjoyed Kathryn’s reaction to meeting Lightning and how she thinks he’s a jerk. By Casie L My Thoughts - 5 out of 5 Unicorns - I loved it!!!***Received a copy of the ebook for an honest reviewThe cover is awesome, she looks like the rope to me :)This is a new author for me :) This is the first part in a novella serial. This is for adults only due to the very steamy content. A serial is a book that is published in part to get into the readers hands more quickly. While getting to read each part is quicker than waiting for the whole book, it means that each part usually ends in a cliffhanger and is not a whole story by itself. If this bothers you, collect all the parts and wait until it is whole before reading it.This world that Nora Ash has created is pretty cool and action packed. Her writing style is fun, and it is easy to picture everything in my mind as I read which makes connecting that much easier :) Kathryn is a blogger, so I definitely connect with her, and the fact that she is not a skinny little twig too. I’m not sure what to think of the two supes we are introduced to because I find myself liking the bad guy more than the cocky good guy. But maybe we are tricked by putting labels on people and that is what is happening here, I have to wait to find out though and it might just kill me because this story rocks!!I think if you love superheroes, action, bad guys, and steamy scenes then you will love this story :) I can’t wait for the next part!!!

The book is also full of photos from the films being quoted which is sort of a nice touch.Be warned though… I think it goes without saying but quite a few of the quotes that Danny has chosen are off color and full of NSFW language and concepts. For me that makes these quotes all the better but some may find them offensive. For those of you that find that sort of stuff offensive I’ll leave you with the immortal words of Clark W. Griswold: “I think you’re all f***ed in the head. We’re ten hours from the f***ing fun park and you want to bail out? Well I’ll tell you something, this is no longer a vacation. It’s a quest. It’s a quest for fun.”Strong recommend.

By crista dix This monograph belongs in every photographer's collection, as well as those who collect and covet photographs. Everything about the book is well crafted, the design is superb, luscious color and rich black & white images look back at you as you lovingly finger each page. Both of the texts from Karen Sinsheimer, Curator of Photography at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art (that has one of the significant collections of photography in the country), and Paula Tognarelli, from the Griffin Museum of Photography lend credibility and background to Aline's contributions to the craft of photography. Aline's introductions to each of her unique series inspires us to want to explore more, learn more about the people she has captured on each page. This book should be required reading for any collector, student, artist or admirer of photography.

No longer can we count on some magical wand to get our work published or purchased. We have to do most of the heavy lifting ourselves. Self & Others was funded on Kickstarter last year and allowed Aline to produce a book that should be at the top of every reviewer’s list as far as content, quality, layout, and design are concerned. At 12x12-inches this hard cover book is at once luscious and lovingly executed, with gilt-edged pages, by an artist whose name and talent are synonymous with success.With a background in painting and fashion she captures the ethos of childhood, and the surreal reality of family life. As I turned each page, and I assure you I didn’t rush through this book, I was greeted with a surprise on each and every page. From the opening of black-and-white photographs to the last section of color photographs to everything in-between, I was a captive audience. Each section is thoughtfully fronted with text by Aline that sets up the experience. Each image holds our attention and compels us to continue… and continue we must!All photographs are given equal “time” and displayed full-page, except for the exquisite fold-out collection of scenes from, “Arrangement in Green and Black: Portrait of the Photographer’s Mother.” We see the Asian Mother, the Witch Mother, the Convict Mother, the Animal Trainer Mother, and (of course!) the Elvis Mother, and the list goes on and on. There is no way I could have imagined my own 85 year-old mother being patient enough to sit through this process.In an age when digital image-making is the presumptive mode of capturing images, Aline’s only digital “camera” is her cell phone.“The only digital camera I use is my phone. I just love the older analog cameras too much. Though I own several Hasselblads and Mamiyas, I keep returning to my first love, the twin-lens Rolleiflex. I’m breaking out my Pentax K1000 again, just to see what I can do with it these many years later. My favorite series is the pull-out containing 20 hand-painted photographs of her mother. Seated in the same position as Whistler's iconic portrait of his mother, Aline Smithson's mother is dressed in a variety of costumes to portray her as a horse rider (with reins leading to the horse in the picture on the wall), a witch, a convict (with blood hounds in the wall picture), a bride (her groom is on the wall), woman confined in a straight jacket (with a blank wall), even as Elvis. Whistler hated the sentimental reactions to his painting. Aline Smithson preempts any such response with her ironic sense of humor. This combination of familiarity, inventiveness and sheer imagination is representative of this collection as a whole. The book includes masked black and white portraits of her children, a series titled "Recreating History" in which she creates a fantasy family history more exotic than the reality, and a series "Hollywood at Home" where she transforms friends and family into skillful allusions to earlier staged stills of movie stars, using color photography to bestow celebrity status on them. There are other equally interesting series such as "Revisiting Beauty" that offer hauntingly beautiful images of women. Seeing that she has dressed them and made them up, they come to reveal indirectly an inner vision of beauty that reveals to us, as portraits invariably do, the artist's own self. Anyone who collects books of photography should possess this gorgeously produced book.

In Uplift Cinema, Allyson Nadia Field recovers the significant yet forgotten legacy of African American filmmaking in the 1910s. Like the racial uplift project, this cinema emphasized economic self-sufficiency, education, and respectability as the keys to African American progress. Field discusses films made at the Tuskegee and Hampton Institutes to promote education, as well as the controversial The New Era, which was an antiracist response to D. W. Griffith's The Birth of a Nation. She also shows how Black filmmakers in New York and Chicago engaged with uplift through the promotion of Black modernity. Uplift cinema developed not just as a response to onscreen racism, but constituted an original engagement with the new medium that has had a deep and lasting significance for African American cinema. Although none of these films survived, Field's examination of archival film ephemera presents a method for studying lost films that opens up new frontiers for exploring early film culture.

Scholarship as creative adventure By Kevin McMahon Like an archaeologist—or, more precisely, a philologist—Allyson Field has sought out and examined all the extant evidence of the very earliest African American films—most of which have been lost. The book is a detective story as much as a work of scholarship. But the legwork and industry wouldn’t amount to much without judgment, critical acuity and imagination. Field brings a lost body of work back into focus.
