Gilly Hartoonian is puzzled when a car crashes into her bookshop—it's also happened to two other stores on her block this week. Turns out, she's not the only one knocked about by crazy coincidences. They're spreading across New England like Chia Pets at Christmastime. Has somebody figured out a way to meddle with the laws of chance? Julio and Shingles, enforcers for the Aphrodite Association, slither onto the scene to find out. They zero in on people with one degree of separation from Gilly, a group that includes Peter, a priest with a past; Ruby, a colorful customer; Alain, a student anarchist; Nate, a physics professor; and John Woo-Hoogenstyn, one of the men who woos her. The owner of a New Hampshire book store meets a host of colorful characters through these events, and it keeps you wondering if/how each is involved in the strange happenings. Just when you get used to the coincidences and start to take them for granted, the book ends with another surprise. An engaging and funny book!
