About the Author William Shakespeare, also known as “Bard of Avon”, is regarded as one of the greatest writer in the English language and the finest dramatist of the world. Book One of the Falstaffiad By Paul Frandano What's left to say about the greatest of the Bard's "histories" and a play some commentators, such as Mark Van Doren, believe Shakespeare's greatest, period. It's certainly one of his most interior, with all the deep motivations, human calculation, rationalization, and layers of personality distributed across its characters.And here's another pitch for the Second Series Ardens, which I enjoy immensely (and am delighted I can obtain easily online, without having to crawl through university-town used book stores). They're old-fashioned scholarly, with commentary that generally illuminates the text and its origins and that seldom descends into deeply arcane scholarly territory (where the Third Series literally dwells).That said (and, I grant you, it's not much of saying), every time I read this Henriad (as distinct from the early Henry VI-iad), or, perhaps more correctly, Falstaffiad, I feel I have to make up my mind again on Falstaff, as in "Falstaff: Rotund Socrates or Base Knave? Or Both? Neither? Something Else?" And I inevitably follow Professor Bloom, who leads the pack of Falstaffolators, and opt for omniscience - indeed, a huge, omniscient "bombard of sac...(and)...stuffed cloak-bag of guts," a philosopher of the lived life, the Elizabethan Socrates of this bottomless play, a bottomless character with the superpower of "seeing through," whose sole commandment is "live." And live he does, in prose that is as majestic as the verse of anyone else in the play's dramatis personae.Viva Falstaff! (And Viva Hotspur! Viva Glendower!)And viva the Bard, whose 450th birthday we celebrated last week.
