Twists, turns, grins and guffaws By AftonE There are more plot twists than a Belgian Pretzel in this new and captivating novel by John Hewitt, his best yet (IMO). The plot makes you feel like you are on a giant roller costar. As soon as you finally reach the top of a climb, you are propelled down the other, curvy side. You descend with gut-tightening speed. The thrill of the ride is peppered with humor at every turn.While you are being catapulted from one curve onto another, Hewitt’s characters stay with you. You become involved with this odd lot of personalities as they slowly transform into your friends. You recognize these people. You want to see the good folks succeed and the bad apples get their just desserts.The author has an obvious deep knowledge of how the media operate. He nails the behavior of the fresh-out-of-school, got-the -job-because-of-her-father TV correspondent and as well as that of the well-seasoned professional camera man who accompanies her.The setting of this extraordinary novel takes place in California foothills near the 1849 California gold rush. And gold retains its lure even if you have to find your nuggets in a washateria.

In the great farcical tradition By Reader In the great farcical tradition, the author deliberately seeks to stress in hiscreations bizarre contradictions which exemplify an unpredictable world.But even at his most fantastic, Hewitt never loses his remarkable gift for accurate characterization of many dreamers or loonies attracted by the foothills and anarchic desires for skewed grandiose. The book is a page turner, a real fun read with many grotesque riddles to solve.

About the Author Angela loves all sorts of things, business, music, general knowledge, literature (obviously), cycling and her retired greyhound, Sean. Everyone needs a sidekick. She decided on a greyhound because one always ends up looking like one's dog - and he has a fast metabolism and amazing thighs. He also doesn't like the cold, getting his feet wet, or spending prolonged periods not wrapped in a blanket. Being thoroughly modern, she has more than one degree (and therefore more than one student debt - hurrah!) and more than one career; starting off with a degree in anthropology, she then worked in an art gallery, trained as a journalist, and retrained as a nurse. Nursing now takes up less time, Angela spends most of her working hours marketing Fox Cycling. But the journalism thing never quite left, and so she has now relapsed into writing. It's like a disease. Or a filthy habit. Let's shrug, and raise a quizzical eyebrow at the world. Come on, it'll be a lark.

Interesting collection of rare gems all in one volume By Lord Heath THE FACTSThis is the first of many paperbacks showcasing the films of Laurel and Hardy. Each volume focuses its attention on an individual film and has pages of publicity material used to promote the film during its initial run (and often re-releases).Swiss Miss, a feature-length film with Laurel & Hardy, was one of their last to be made with legendary film producer Hal Roach. This booklet (it wouldn't be fair to call it a book) features re-printed posters, newspaper clippings, lobby cards, interviews and adverts which were published in 1938 when the film was released.Each issue has a glossy cover, and approximately 11x8.5" in size.This volume is 56 pages, of which 43 pages are used for actual material from this film.THE OPINONSThe work herein has been collected over a long period of time by a dedicated author, whose previous works are moulded in the same style of presentation. To have so much information about one film all in one place may be a little overwhelming for some, but for the true die-hard Laurel & Hardy fan this is an interesting and quite enjoyable offering from Hyatt. As the set of issues continues to be expanded, this would make a nice addition to the bookshelf of any fan.

An Extra Perspective on a Movie's Theatrical Run By Eric Schultz The author has long been a collector of all sorts of items related to the great comedy team of Laurel & Hardy. In this book, he shares with us the promotional materials which were used in 1938 to advertize this L&H feature.These are from official "pressbooks", which were sent to movie theaters, for their managers to use locally to advertize the film and hopefully to bring more people to the theatres which were showing it. Many of these items were used for a theater's newspaper advertizements for that week. Looking through these examples of artwork, and reading the various "write-ups" gives us a more complete perspective on the time when this film was first released to movie theatres. It is interesting to see the styles and "angles" which were used to try to attract more people to come and see "Swiss Miss"

The truth is that though you might not have a clue who I am-unless you watch cable very late at night-there are countless working stiffs like me out there, grinding away every day at the wheel of fortune. If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor documents my time in blue-collar Hollywood, where movies are cheap, the hours are long, and the filmmaking process can be very personal. To keep up with the times, I've digitized Chins. It was originally published in hardcover/analog fifteen years ago, which is a vast amount of time in the evolution of books and technology, and it was time to get current. The advance of technology is great for a book like this, which is jammed full of pictures. When it came out originally, the photographs all had to be black and white and moderately sized on the page. Now, any photo that was originally taken in color can strut its stuff. Overall, the resolution of the images is off-the-charts better than the first go-around. This is one "sequel" that I'm happy to be a part of, since we could make so many technical improvements. The process was very similar to restoring an old movie.Since I knew that it was going to be reissued, I also had a look at the story being told and decided to condense, move, or clarify some chapters, all or in part. I also tried to add a hint of historical context, since it has been a decade and a half since Chins first came out.I hope you enjoy it. Regards,Bruce Campbell

58 of 59 people found the following review helpful. A Grade-A Look at B-Movies and More By C. T. Mikesell Bruce Campbell's autobiography is an immensely fun read. Written conversationally (admittedly one-sided, unless you're given to talking to inanimate objects), the book provides a frank and surprisingly objective look at Campbell's life and career.The book begins with Campbell's childhood in rural/suburban Michigan and the transformation that took place in high school when he met the Raimi brothers. How Campbell's career intersects time and again with the Raimi's and other high school cohorts is presented throughout the book. When one thinks of Hollywood bigshots, backstabbing and betrayal come to mind before lifelong friendships. Perhaps that explains why Bruce Campbell isn't a Hollywood bigshot - but why he has a huge fan following nonetheless.In detailing the blood (Karo syrup-based and real), sweat and tears that went into making the first Evil Dead feature, the book presents scenes that are as horrifying as anything in the movie itself (it also provides the best tangential recipe I've come across since I read Clifford Stoll's The Cuckoo's Egg), but it also makes it seem like a ton of fun. Probably a quarter of the book is devoted to the Evil Dead process: conception, prototype, capital-raising, filming, editing, distribution, etc. Even with the documentary features on the Evil Dead DVDs, there's plenty of new information here. If you're not aware of what goes into making a feature film, this is an eye opener.Campbell doesn't go into as much detail about what goes into TV production, but he does share some interesting and amusing anecdotes (including details of David Duchovny's embarrassing flatulence problems).Perhaps the most interesting part of the autobiography deals with the impact the 9/11 attack had on the promotional tour for the first edition of the book. Three years later, when most discussion of the event involves finger-pointing and blame-placing, it is interesting to read Campbell's take on how he and his wife did their best to keep their lives on course in the days and weeks after the WTC bombings. If you hadn't already gotten that Campbell is a do-whatever-it-takes trouper in the main body of the book, it becomes eminently clear in the appendix.If you're a Bruce Campbell fan like I am, buy this book. Even if you don't want to make it big in the film industry, you'll find yourself yearning for a digital camera and a couple gullible friends by the time you finish reading it.

Bruce Campbell, cult hero (and actor), wrote the perfect book for his fans - it drips with charisma, his clever and self-depreciating humor, and a genuine personal and honest touch you rarely find in your run-of-the-mill, ghost-written Hollywood memoir. And it has everything a Deadite could want - very amusing anecdotes of his early childhood and teen years, tons and tons of photos, fascinating behind-the-scenes info about the making (and funding) of the Evil Dead movies, and tons of valuable insight into the Hollywood system, from the point of view of the low man on the totem pole.I found his casual, anecdotal writing style really fun, although I agree with critics that he doesn't get too detailed or self-analytical about his personal life. He also breezes over his television work, which might frustrate Brisco and Xena fans. But in general, Bruce Campbell - an extremely likeable guy - succeeds with this extremely likeable book.Hail to the king!

By A Customer This book is just plain fun to read.Okay, sure... you get some interesting insight into the struggles it takes to be a working actor in Stage, Film, TV and that spore-infested place called Hollywood. I certainly enjoyed anecdotes about the Evil Dead films, Brisco County Jr., Congo, Hercules, Xena, the X-files and more... But lets face it, Bruce Campbell brings one thing to his roles that got me interested enough to buy the book in the first place: a sense of fun. And *that* is represented in his writing in spades. For proof, I merely had to catch my wife (whose usual reaction to any Bruce Campbell masterpiece is to groan in despair) happily reading this book herself... This turned out to be fairly easy, since every other page had her laughing out loud.I didn't complain, since I had already finished it... I read the entire thing cover to cover (a fairly meaty 300 pages) the same day it arrived. It's written in such a lively, engaging style that it was never put down for long.If you're interested enough to read these reviews, then you're interested enough to buy the book and enjoy the heck out of it.

First "Love Child" and also "Child No More". Her stories are both exciting and intriguing. I purchased this book weeks ago and i thumbed threw when i received it. The mysterious cover attracted my attention at that time. Bits and pieces were enought for me to stop people from telling me what was going on with Tommy Hulette in this part of the story. A.M is a wondrrful author. This is a great book to add to my collection. Buy it now you won't regret it!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. come for the jokes, stay for the demonstration of the value of a liberal arts education By Bruce Simon This much-anticipated sequel to Vanishing in a Puff of Logic keeps you guessing until the very last page (and beyond). You don't have to be a Nethack fan to appreciate the mind games between ChattyCatty (the pebsak/lich) and his creation RegretMeNot (don't call her an elfmaid) as they attempt to outwit her patron deity Anhur (who's a bit distracted by teh intertubes, as well as maybe high on the pebsak's spine, which he ate in the previous novel). But Nethack veterans will certainly enjoy their unorthodox gameplay tactics during RegretMeNot's quest for ascension. The rest of us can focus on the dialogue, the puns, the double entendres, the action, the pranks, the parodies of paranormal romance, the allusions (which range widely from Tom Petty and Bob Dylan to Wallace Stevens and George Bernard Shaw to dozens of internet memes), and especially the closing courtroom drama (which features Daniel Webster the master mind flayer, Robespierre, Goya, and Tywin Lannister along with a gaggle of gods and goddesses) and its cataclysmic aftermath. I recommend reading this novel with a google search window open and upon finishing it, petitioning Studio Dongo to get to work on a sequel. I move for Everquest!
