At the age of twenty-one, Prince Philip wrote to a relative: 'I know you will never think much of me. I am rude and unmannerly.' Prince Philip probably never managed to change the opinion of his relative... This affectionate compendium brings together both the best and a host of less well-known stories about the prince, giving an insight into the royal world where he 'traipses around' as a 'fella who belongs to Mrs Queen', rather than being 'professionally qualified in something'. From Prince Philip's blunt speech making, to his fearless mocking of officials and captains of industry, to his fond teasing of Her Majesty herself, here is a truly regal celebration of the unusual daily life in royal circles.

Barrett I enjoyed this collection of Philip's verbal indiscretions, and thought it was well worth the three dollars it cost me. It is not history or biography or in any sense a serious book; just light and amusing entertainment. The editing of the Kindle edition is exceedingly poor, and at times distracting. In some places words, punctuation, and whole ends of sentences have fallen out; in other places they are repeated. In a couple of places they are just odd, and it's hard to tell what happened. At one point, the book even refers to its subject as "Prince Philip, Duke of York." (He's the Duke of Edinburgh; the Duke of York is his son.) The editing problems seem more pronounced toward the end of the book. I'm not sure whether the editor was getting tired or I was just getting tired of the editing. If the editing had been better, I'd have given the book four stars for being exactly kind of the light reading I had expected it to be. If it had been a serious book, the editing would have taken the rating down to one star.

Carmichael Absolutely full of egregious editorial errors (did no one proof this book!?!)! Very, very irritatingly distracting. That said, an interesting brief look at an interesting man, who has a difficult role to play in life -- I think he has been an admirable support to a gracious and wonderful monarch. He can be (sometimes quite understandably) curmudgeonly but his remarks are often what many of us would wish to have said.Prince Philip must give Her Majesty headaches at times, but he must also have been a marvelous and loving lifetime partner in one of history's most difficult fishbowls. Few could have handled such a task as well.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Amusing afternoon read. . . By CalNative Very amusing, as far as HRH's quips and quotes are concerned. Prince Philip has never pretended to be anything other than he is - outspoken, sometimes rude, but rarely purposefully hurtful. When I read the criticisms written about him, I wonder if anyone has tried to imagine being in his position and remaining serenely and sweetly passive. Doubt it.What is NOT amusing is the horrible lack of editing done for the Kindle edition of the book. That was the very worst "writing" I've seen outside of a half-educated teen-ager's post in Facebook.

Gray I’ve always had an affinity for gambling but I never considered it to be something I could transition into a full time affair. From my local horse betting down at the casino to playing some tennis odds, I relegated myself to enjoying some random opportunities that weren’t so risky that it would affect my financial affairs. I picked this book up because it seemed intriguing and I thought it may illuminate me on the ways someone can further involve themselves in the sport without losing their shirt. Now that I’ve completed this guide though, I now realize that I can actually gamble full time without a concern for losing everything! I know that anyone reading this may see that as impossible given the word “gambling”, but after reading this material I understand that the word “investing” is more appropriate for this style of betting. Once you read the work and understand the author’s teaching, you’ll see, just like I have, that this can turn into a full time job if you want it to. Also, the author has really provided everything necessary for one to do this; he even has added websites and instructional tools to make it as easy as possible. Now with this guide at my disposal I can’t wait to start making money with this fun and lucrative method.

The author barely mentions horse racing in the 40 pages of text and when he does he assumes a person can get different odds on the same horse. Here in the US all betting pools in the country are centralized meaning there is no such thing as "bookies" anymore. You get the same odds regardless of where you live or place your bets. I suppose you could use and illegal gambling site and get different odds. This book is a "one trick pony". A simple math formula you can use assuming you can get someone to give you different odds on the same horse.

Years ago, Christina Blackburn posed for a scandalous painting that rocked the Victorian art world—and nearly ruined her life. Now a proper antiquarian for the National Museum, Christina hides her smoldering beauty behind an icy façade and prim spectacles. When the museum sends Christina to examine an ancient Highland treasure, she comes face-to-face with the same notorious painting—and its dangerously handsome owner. Sir Aedan MacBride knows that a local legend of a sleeping maiden says the estate's heir must never fall in love, which suits him fine—until he meets Christina Blackburn. Convinced that the painting's beautiful model is the key to saving his threatened lands, he is desperate to discover what she knows about the old legend—yet he never expects love to interfere. Waking the Princess (The Scottish Lairds Series, Book 2), by Susan King

From Publishers Weekly An ancient Scottish legend about a beautiful maiden asleep in a rose bower and the laird of Dundrennan, for whom true love can have tragic consequences, plays out in the second installment of King's Victorian-era trilogy (following Taming the Heiress). When Sir Aedan MacBride of Dundrennan discovers historic ruins on his land, he's forced to notify the National Museum. The museum sends prim, bespectacled antiquarian Christina Blackburn, the model from Sir Aedan's most treasured painting. Since the revealing portrait reminds Christina of unhappy times with her late husband, she buries herself in her quest to unearth the ruins, which may be remnants of an early Pictish civilization. The past has made Christina close her heart to love, and the legend has made Aedan leery of it, but still the two are drawn to each other. Before they can find happiness together, however, they must circumvent the briar legend and its supposed curse and outwit a stock villain. This romance starts more slowly than King's medieval-era novels, but her fluid prose and engaging central characters weave a subtle spell. Well-researched details about Victorian archaeology and a sensational, swashbuckling climax make this Sleeping Beauty story a treat for King's fans. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist After her late husband created a risque portrait of her as the famous sleeping princess of Dundrennan, Christina Blackburn has lived with scandal and notoriety. The painting hangs in the bedroom of Sir Aedan Arthur MacBride, who has become obsessed with its stunning subject. When Aedan is commissioned by Queen Victoria to build a highway, workers find an ancient ruin in its path. The National Museum sends its antiquarian to investigate, and she is none other than Christina. In the meantime, an evil and greedy archaeologist is determined to take the credit for the find (as well as any gold that might be buried there) and will stop at nothing to reach his goal. Aedan falls in love with Christina, his beloved painting's sleeping beauty come to life, but an old family curse prevents him from asking her to marry him. King combines Celtic myths, Arthurian legends, and the tale of Sleeping Beauty to create a delicious romantic blend in the second book in her Victorian Scotland trilogy (Taming the Heiress [BKL Jl 03]), proving herself a masterful storyteller. By A Customer I absolutely love Susan King's writing style, and I have loved each of her books so far--they are always exquisitely crafted, with a warmth at the heart of each story that is irresistible and unforgettable. In a genre of quick reads that just don't stick with the reader for very long, here is a writer who delivers quality and satisfaction for readers who love romance, yet often find themselves hungry for substance in a story.WAKING THE PRINCESS is another beautifully rendered story by a truly gifted storyteller. THis is a book to savor for its wonderful characters, its unusual and compelling story--pay attention, and you will be immensely rewarded. If you are used to fast, lite reads, you may not "get it" but that may be your loss. This is a sensitively crafted story written with a lyrical tone. Aedan and Christina are compelling, sympathetic, very real characters, deeply challenged by their pasts and their emotions, and forced to deal with their own private fears in order to grab at the chance for true love at last. The whole story, the setting, the characters, the plot, are convincingly created and lavishly constructed. The reader is drawn into the story completely--the whole world went away while I read, and that is something that is difficult to achieve in any genre.I am a high school English teacher, not that it makes me an expert, but it definitely gives me an appreciation for good, even great, writing, and for solid story structure. I love historical romance, but find myself often disappointed by current trends. Susan King is always the exception for me--and she is an exceptional writer, a very talented novelist. The beautiful, complex artistry in WAKING THE PRINCESS transcends much of the genre. It reads like a much bigger book, like a hardback novel. Her books are always fresh, different, and beautiful. If you love an intelligent story and romance that will sweep you off your feet, if you long for something different and really fresh, try any one of Susan King's books.

A charming winner By A Customer In 1858 Edinburgh, though museum antiquarian expert Christina Blackburn wants to acquire the Dundrennan collection, she prefers to avoid traveling there. Christina knows that the MacBrides who reside at Dundrennan own the scandalous painting that she posed for in her youth and hides from it ever since in garbs to bury her beauty. No one else with the skills is available so a reluctant Christina agrees to go, but hopes that her frumpy wardrobe hides the fact that she was the model.Upon arriving at the home of Sir Aedan Arthur MacBride, Christina sees her notorious portrait on display. He feels that if he links her to the picture, her credibility will be destroyed. Aedan finds himself quite attracted to his guest and wonders if the legend of the painting could be true that he is the handsome man WAKING THE PRINCESS with love.Susan King's Victorian romantic rendition of Sleeping Beauty is a charming winner that will provide readers with quite an entertaining time. The story line is clever and witty as the lead couple struggles to avoid what seems obvious to everyone else is their kismet, fulfilling the legend. If a reader can only choose only one historical over the summer, WAKING THE PRINCESS is a strong choice though released late ins season in time for the Labor Weekend.Harriet Klausner

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A sweetly spiced fairy tale for adults. By Huntress Reviews Years ago, Christina Blackburn posed for a scandalous painting for her half mad husband. Shamed by it's eroticism, she, now widowed, has retreated into the guise of a staid, plain museum worker. She is blown away when an assignment for the museum brings her face to face with her past. Sir Aedan, the paintings current owner needs her help in learning the truth of a legend. He has already begun to fall in love with her without even meeting her, from the painting. Inevitably, he begins to be drawn to the real woman, despite the curse that looms over them. They are drawn to one another to such an extent, that when Christina's brother arrives to paint a less sensual sequel to the first portrait, he casts them in the role of star crossed lovers to make the new painting come alive.*** While your children watch the newly reissued Sleeping Beauty, you can delight in this sweetly spiced fairy tale for adults. Weaving the magic of Camelot with the enchantment of true love, Ms. King delivers the type of fantasy that her readers have come to relish over the years. It might be interesting to note that there is a very similiar true story about a Spanish princess, though I do not know if the author was aware of this. ***Reviewed by Amanda Killgore

If you've heard jazz guitarists like Joe Pass play chord melody, you may think that the style requires an encyclopedic knowledge of music theory, musical super-powers, or making a deal with the devil. But fear not! This book will show you how to create your own satisfying chord melody arrangements on the mandolin...and will do so in a practical, applicable, non stroke-inducing way. "Aaron Weinstein has many musical accomplishments. I am very proud to have played a small part with some of them. When he was only 12 he made his first recordings and asked me to play mandolin on them. I was knocked out to encounter someone that young that was conversant in both old-time or contest fiddling and Joe Venuti style jazz. Not long after that Aaron became interested in the mandolin and chords and he came by every so often to play and discuss voicings, improvisation and the like. I showed him some of the Jethro Burns chord melody arrangements that Jethro showed me. I've been teaching those for decades in hopes of one day playing them smoothly myself! Fast forward a few more years and Aaron has a Berklee degree, traveled the world playing hot violin music and is hobnobbing with the greatest NYC jazz stars. And oh yeah, one other thing: he took the art of chord-melody mandolin style to an entirely new level! The rich harmonies of the standard jazz and show tune repertoire, the swinging bass lines and connecting chords and independent voice movements (doing more than one thing at a time) are all present in Aaron's style, thanks to his great ear, open mind and gift at locating things on the fretboard. And now Aaron has documented, explained and shared his discoveries and approach with all of us in this book. Thank you Aaron! This is truly a step-by-step method that you will enjoy. You'll find yourself saying 'oh, of course!' as the author gets you playing and understanding things that sound very detailed and complex. The first section I would call the mandolinistic stuff: the how-to on getting things moving and connected on the fretboard. This part is laid out in a very logical manner with clear explanations and fun activities. After working through these etudes you will know the fretboard better and be a better mandolin playing musician regardless of what style of music is your favorite. As I looked this part over I recalled the parable about 'give someone a fish and he will have a meal. Teach him to fish and he'll eat the rest of his life..' The second part puts your new-found chops to work playing some great solo chord melody tunes Weinstein style. Again the author walks us gently into the material by providing two versions of each piece, the basic structure followed by a more developed version. In the history of mandolin playing there have been many examples of techniques, arrangements and music that might be thought of as 'chord-melody' style. Consider works by Raffaele Calace, or 'Duo' style from the early twentieth century American stylists and then again as modernized by Evan Marshall in the current era. Bach on the mandolin, as played by virtuosi such as Caterina Lichtenberg, Mike Marshall, Carlo Aonzo, Chris Thile and others also illustrates harmony and melody simultaneously. And of course Jethro Burns did so much in the way of bringing jazz and standards to life with chord-melody mandolin that it is often referred to as 'Jethro Style'. The book you have in your hand presents a unique and accessible route to these types of techniques and sounds. Bravo, Aaron! And thank you, my friend." Don Stiernberg

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. pretty much the entire advice Jethro Burns gives on chord ... By Phil This is a significant book for those wanting to know more about chord melody mandolin. In Mel Bay's Complete Jethro Burns Mandolin Book, pretty much the entire advice Jethro Burns gives on chord melody is to just put the melody note on the higher strings. In this book, Aaron Weinstein goes into much more depth about chord theory on the mandolin. Not for beginners and, to get the most out of this book, you need to know how to read treble clef music notation. The Etude section includes some pretty examples using multiple chord augmentations -- a nice change from using public domain songs as Mel Bay tends to do.

It will only download to a Kindle, not on the Kindle reader apps. I have reader apps on multiple devices, but it says they are "unsupported," even though I deliver books to them all the time. I can read it on the Cloud Reader, but the page size is so small, it could only be read with a magnifying glass. The font size function does not work on it. I have the latest version of the Kindle Reader, BTW. I immediately returned it and ordered the paper version.

It makes the mandolin sound like the true melody instrument it is By mike rath Finally, a reason to learn the chords I should have been learning all along! It makes the mandolin sound like the true melody instrument it is. Some of the chords start out almost impossible to play, but with time the fingers find their place and the tone rings out. This book will be a focus of my practice work for quite some time. That you, Aaron!

About the Author

Mark Twain, who was born Samuel L. Clemens in Missouri in 1835, wrote some of the most enduring works of literature in the English language, including The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc was his last completed book—and, by his own estimate, his best. Its acquisition by Harper & Brothers allowed Twain to stave off bankruptcy. He died in 1910.

Malloy I have probably purchased over fifty copies of this book over the years; I can't seem to keep one for very long. I share it with people I care about, people who are open to other's perspectives, and people who tend to express opinions that they haven't really thought about. Every time I read it (and I have usually read every copy I purchased more than once), it moves me. More than any other work I have ever enjoyed, this book has dazzled me with the brilliance, the astute erudition, the passion and the restraint of its author, Mark Twain. As a retired Marine, as a parent, and as one who holds a degree in English, I heartily recommend a thoughtful reading of this work. Then I encourage you to do as I have done: share it.

Not Your Father's Huck Finn By Kevin West The "protest" writings of Mark Twain gained renewed interest during the anti-Viet Nam War Movement and the most prominant of these writings is "The War Prayer." From 1962 to 1973, it appeared in no fewer that 4 separate collections of his stories, including "A Pen Warmed Up in Hell'" and "The Damned Human Race." In 1970, Harper&Row published "The War Prayer" on its own , in hard cover, with haunting illustrations by John Groth. The story clocks in at slightly more than 1,200 words. It is Twain at his most economic. And most vehement. The story begins as an unnamed country prepares for war, its citizens awash with patriotic rapture. Parades, mass meetings and rousing speeches have almost everybody pumped and primed for a bloody good time. On the eve of battle, a service is held and the pastor invokes God's blessings on their cause and their armies. A stranger arrives "bearing a message from Almighty God." The Lord has heard their prayer, the messenger informs them, and is willing to grant it. But only after they have heard the unspoken portions of their prayer. The secret prayer, hidden in their hearts. Twain then unleashes a blunt tutorial on the ravages of war. "(H)elp us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreads with our shells,...Lay waste their humble homes,..wring the hearts of their offending widows...their little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated land." Not exactly win-one-for-the-Gipper stuff. Just a handy reminder in the age of surgical strikes. In the Post Cold War Era, and 84 years after its initial publication, "The War Prayer" remains a devastating attack on any call to arms and the concept of just and winnable warfare.

The text, which is arranged on the pages like poetry, is accompanied by John Groth's black-and-white illustrations. The entire book, although unpaginated, is less than 100 pages long. The story takes place in a time of war, when "the holy fire of patriotism" burns in every heart. Twain tells of a church service in which the congregation is preparing to send its young men off to war. But an aged stranger interrupts the service with a message of his own.The back cover of the book notes that "The War Prayer" was written during the Philippine-American war in the first decade of the twentieth century, was rejected for publication in 1905, and remained unpublished until 1923. Twain has crafted a harsh, bitter, and biting satire of how patriotism, militarism, and religion can come together. His searing message is well complemented by John Groth's stark, sometimes nightmarish images. Groth's impressionistic drawings look like he has lacerated the pages with his pen. Twain's "Prayer" has a timeless and universal feel. After all these decades, it still packs a punch.
