Mad Jade is a fervent series of intimate conversations the writer delves in - with oneself, with the loved partner, with things around, and with the abstract. A mix of interior monologues, apostrophes and asides. Revealing the resonant heartache, dramatic and matter-of-fact, dry humour.

Intimate and Tangible By Brittan Intimate, funny and tangible, this book offers an escape for one to reflect on their own thoughts and feelings as you read through each page. The illustration work is simple and beautifully effective, not overpowering the poetry. Their is a brilliant balance between the abstract and the simply real of daily life.

Often it is stated that George Lucas derived Star Wars from Joseph Campbell's Monomyth or The Hero's Journey. That he was the driving force behind the original trilogy's success. That he planned it as a 12-chapter saga from the very start. These things could not be further from the truth.

There are others who played roles in its success, such as his ex-wife, Marcia Lucas; producer Gary Kurtz; and Empire Strikes Back screenwriters Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan. This presents an alternate view of the Star Wars saga and how it began. While not unheard of, the topics discussed here will give fans a different perspective.

Smart but sloppy eBook By Big Apple The cover's awful and the formatting ugly with typos galore but the information is smart and there's some interesting nuggets here. A tidied up rewrite with a more professional approach might push this up to four stars. Some pictures wouldn't hurt.

The Belligerent Book of Movie Quotes is an exceptionally distasteful collection of threats, appalling criticism, revolting dialogue, and offensive one-liners that are not only obnoxious but also absolutely hilarious. The book is jam-packed with an assortment of the most detestable un-inspirational quotes taken from films of every genre that are often more memorable than the movie itself. Don’t look for motivational sayings here unless, of course, your motive is to offend!

I have written in quotes because as the title of the book suggests, this is a collection of movie quotes so Mr. Marianino didn’t actually pen them…. he curated them. And he did a damn find job at it. He did pen the dedication which I felt like was written directly to me:This book goes out to the movie fans that can watch a film and remember the horrible things said, in humor or in a threatening manner, and repeat them word for word in their everyday lives. If that doesn’t describe me I don’t know what does. From the back cover:The Belligerent Book of Movie Quotes BackThe Belligerent Book of Movie Quotes is an exceptionally distasteful collection of threats, appalling criticism, revolting dialogue, and offensive one-liners that are not only obnoxious but also absolutely hilarious.I could go on forever quoting my favorite quotes from the book but that would be sort of pointless. If you’re into snark, sarcasm and these types of quotes you’ll absolutely love this collection. The paperback version that I got is less than 100 pages long so it’s a quick and fun read for sure. The book is also full of photos from the films being quoted which is sort of a nice touch.Be warned though… I think it goes without saying but quite a few of the quotes that Danny has chosen are off color and full of NSFW language and concepts. For me that makes these quotes all the better but some may find them offensive. For those of you that find that sort of stuff offensive I’ll leave you with the immortal words of Clark W. Griswold: “I think you’re all f***ed in the head. We’re ten hours from the f***ing fun park and you want to bail out? Well I’ll tell you something, this is no longer a vacation. It’s a quest. It’s a quest for fun.”Strong recommend.

Like Clubber Lang on the cover, I would pity the fool that didn't pick up this book. This book made me want to crush my enemies, see them driven before me, and to hear the lamentations of their women.Must Buy!!!!

Created over an almost 20-year span and drawing from 18 bodies of work, this is the first published monograph of Aline Smithson’s work and features her defining series Arrangement in Green and Black: Portrait of the Photographer’s Mother. From black-and-white to hand-painted photographs, this collection of portraits combines humor and family to create a universal expression of motherhood, to capture the essence of childhood, and to examine created realities, the poignancy of childhood, and the pathos of aging and relationships. She brings a background in painting and fashion to her images, but at the heart of her work is her ability to recognize the inner self of her subjects. The photographer considers all her portraits as a reflection of herself and the stories she wants to tell and in this way she has created a visual language that is her own unique autobiography.

By crista dix This monograph belongs in every photographer's collection, as well as those who collect and covet photographs. Everything about the book is well crafted, the design is superb, luscious color and rich black & white images look back at you as you lovingly finger each page. Both of the texts from Karen Sinsheimer, Curator of Photography at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art (that has one of the significant collections of photography in the country), and Paula Tognarelli, from the Griffin Museum of Photography lend credibility and background to Aline's contributions to the craft of photography. Aline's introductions to each of her unique series inspires us to want to explore more, learn more about the people she has captured on each page. This book should be required reading for any collector, student, artist or admirer of photography.

Anderson Self & Others, by Aline Smithson is the best example of a book that was published by artists, from the author to the publisher to the printer. Even if you are not a big fan of photography this is a book that should find a place on the coffee table of anyone who considers themselves a “creative sort.”“This monograph belongs in every photographer’s collection, as well as those who collect and covet photographs. Everything about the book is well crafted, the design is superb, luscious color and rich black-and-white images look back at you as you lovingly finger each page. Aline’s introductions to each of her unique series inspires us to want to explore more, learn more about the people she has captured on each page. This book should be required reading for any collector, student, artist or admirer of photography.” Crista, Amazon reviewIt took almost 20 years to create this monograph from a photographer/writer/publisher who is the epitome of the 21st century artist. No longer can we count on some magical wand to get our work published or purchased. We have to do most of the heavy lifting ourselves. Enter Kickstarter and other crowd-funding platforms. These are online services that allow people to place their work on a designated site in order to gain enough funding to bring the project to life. Self & Others was funded on Kickstarter last year and allowed Aline to produce a book that should be at the top of every reviewer’s list as far as content, quality, layout, and design are concerned. At 12x12-inches this hard cover book is at once luscious and lovingly executed, with gilt-edged pages, by an artist whose name and talent are synonymous with success. With a background in painting and fashion she captures the ethos of childhood, and the surreal reality of family life. As I turned each page, and I assure you I didn’t rush through this book, I was greeted with a surprise on each and every page. From the opening of black-and-white photographs to the last section of color photographs to everything in-between, I was a captive audience. Each section is thoughtfully fronted with text by Aline that sets up the experience. Each image holds our attention and compels us to continue… and continue we must! All photographs are given equal “time” and displayed full-page, except for the exquisite fold-out collection of scenes from, “Arrangement in Green and Black: Portrait of the Photographer’s Mother.” We see the Asian Mother, the Witch Mother, the Convict Mother, the Animal Trainer Mother, and (of course!) the Elvis Mother, and the list goes on and on. There is no way I could have imagined my own 85 year-old mother being patient enough to sit through this process. In an age when digital image-making is the presumptive mode of capturing images, Aline’s only digital “camera” is her cell phone.“The only digital camera I use is my phone. I just love the older analog cameras too much. Though I own several Hasselblads and Mamiyas, I keep returning to my first love, the twin-lens Rolleiflex. I’m breaking out my Pentax K1000 again, just to see what I can do with it these many years later. I like the formality of medium format, the loading of the film, the slowed down nature of image making, and then waiting for the results,” she shared in an earlier interview. She is also not a shoot-and-print image maker. She lovingly hand paints selected portfolios to bring out an antiquated sensibility to the end product. In the series, “Recreating History,” Aline wanted to “print my own work and add color through oil paint. The work is very nostalgic and the muted colors seemed appropriate for that subject matter. When I started working in color film was when I really amped up the color, hoping to replicate some of those delicious Kodachrome or Technicolor colors of the 1950s.”Named one of the Top 10 Best Photography Books of 2015 by Slate, her patience is our reward and for that we are thankful!Self & Others: Portrait as Autobiography

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A MUST HAVE! By Brian Finney What a beautiful book this is. And how original the images in it are. My favorite series is the pull-out containing 20 hand-painted photographs of her mother. Seated in the same position as Whistler's iconic portrait of his mother, Aline Smithson's mother is dressed in a variety of costumes to portray her as a horse rider (with reins leading to the horse in the picture on the wall), a witch, a convict (with blood hounds in the wall picture), a bride (her groom is on the wall), woman confined in a straight jacket (with a blank wall), even as Elvis. Whistler hated the sentimental reactions to his painting. Aline Smithson preempts any such response with her ironic sense of humor. This combination of familiarity, inventiveness and sheer imagination is representative of this collection as a whole. The book includes masked black and white portraits of her children, a series titled "Recreating History" in which she creates a fantasy family history more exotic than the reality, and a series "Hollywood at Home" where she transforms friends and family into skillful allusions to earlier staged stills of movie stars, using color photography to bestow celebrity status on them. There are other equally interesting series such as "Revisiting Beauty" that offer hauntingly beautiful images of women. Seeing that she has dressed them and made them up, they come to reveal indirectly an inner vision of beauty that reveals to us, as portraits invariably do, the artist's own self. Anyone who collects books of photography should possess this gorgeously produced book.

In Uplift Cinema, Allyson Nadia Field recovers the significant yet forgotten legacy of African American filmmaking in the 1910s. Like the racial uplift project, this cinema emphasized economic self-sufficiency, education, and respectability as the keys to African American progress. Field discusses films made at the Tuskegee and Hampton Institutes to promote education, as well as the controversial The New Era, which was an antiracist response to D. W. Griffith's The Birth of a Nation. She also shows how Black filmmakers in New York and Chicago engaged with uplift through the promotion of Black modernity. Uplift cinema developed not just as a response to onscreen racism, but constituted an original engagement with the new medium that has had a deep and lasting significance for African American cinema. Although none of these films survived, Field's examination of archival film ephemera presents a method for studying lost films that opens up new frontiers for exploring early film culture.

Uplift Cinema: The Emergence of African American Film and the Possibility of Black Modernity, by Allyson Nadia Field

Review "Even before The Birth of a Nation, African American filmmakers envisioned cinema as a means of presenting a new image of black culture in the USA. With peerless archaeological research, Allyson Nadia Field excavates the roots of African American film within a rhetoric of social uplift. Offering more than a prologue to later black filmmaking, Field reveals the origins of an alternative film culture based in ideological address and political rhetoric, as cinema forged an effective political voice." (Tom Gunning, author of The Films of Fritz Lang: Allegories of Vision and Modernity)"A significant and remarkable book, Uplift Cinema revises African American cinematic history. Allyson Field's illuminating scholarship and close reading of primary archival sources will compel historians to reimagine how the history of black cinema is told." (Maurice Wallace, author of Constructing the Black Masculine: Identity and Ideology in African American Men's Literature and Culture, 1775-1995)"Undaunted by the profound lack of surviving films, Allyson Nadia Field deftly excavates the rich discursive history of how African Americans mobilized and fine-tuned the rhetoric of uplift in the context of visual culture. Uplift Cinema is an essential mapping of the ideological, economic, and aesthetic tensions structuring the emergence of Black American film production and exhibition, and a vital account of Black participation in the history of industrial filmmaking." (Jacqueline Najuma Stewart, author of Migrating to the Movies: Cinema and Black Urban Modernity)

About the Author Allyson Nadia Field is Assistant Professor of Cinema and Media Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Scholarship as creative adventure By Kevin McMahon Like an archaeologist—or, more precisely, a philologist—Allyson Field has sought out and examined all the extant evidence of the very earliest African American films—most of which have been lost. The book is a detective story as much as a work of scholarship. But the legwork and industry wouldn’t amount to much without judgment, critical acuity and imagination. Field brings a lost body of work back into focus.
