Timed for release around Clapton's 70th birthday, MOTHERLESS CHILD will be the ultimate celebration and definitive biography of one of the most influential musicians alive today. From the 1960s graffiti proclaiming 'Clapton is God', to his seminal work in supergroup Cream and his phenomenally successful solo career, Eric Clapton has achieved the status of bona fide living legend and enduring icon. Now in his sixth decade in the music business, he occupies an exulted position at the pinnacle of the rock world thanks to songs like Layla, Wonderful Tonight and Tears In Heaven, and for many is considered the greatest guitarist who ever lived. This book will chart his rise to stardom in the 60s and his unparalleled success since walking out of the Yardbirds as a 20-year-old to follow his chosen path of the blues with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and later with Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker in supergroup Cream, as well as his successful solo career. However, his success has come at a price. Once a happy well-adjusted boy, the young Clapton was devastated by the realisation at the age of nine that the woman he thought was his sister was in fact his mother, and that the couple he thought were his parents were his maternal grandparents. His treatment by his mother was also to shape his future turbulent relationships with the women in his life, including his failed first marriage to model Pattie Boyd, who was married to Clapton's close friend George Harrison when he fell for her. Motherless Child also chronicles his battles with the demons of drugs and alcohol, his successful journey to sobriety, and examines his legacy as one of the most influential musicans of his generation. This is essential reading for any Clapton fan.

Poteet If you're a Clapton fan, you already know pretty much everything this book has to offer. There is very little new information here, and it brings even less insight. The book reads like a high school essay: the author is simply re-wording what's already been published. He quotes liberally from Clapton's own memoirs, biographies, articles and interviews. The author directly interviews just a few people from Clapton's distant past, and you've probably already read what they had to say about their turbulent years with the man. Sorry, Mr. Scott, but it's been done.Even the gossip about Princess Diana isn't new, another biography included this possibility years ago. If you read the recent news articles about this little tidbit, you have already read everything the book has to offer up for this scenario.Don't waste your time or money on this bio. The single star isn't for Eric Clapton, it's for this particular book.

I found the writing style hard to follow and a lot of the conclusions were very subjective. as an example, I don't remember there ever being a competition between Clapton and SRV. It was more of a mutual admiration society. That mindset has gone away years ago. I struggled to finish the book hoping to learn something new about the man, musician and person. I never found it! If you want a better take on Clapton's life read his book or the Ray Coleman book.

By Martyski The subject is interesting but I found the writing style heavy going which detracted from the pleasure of reading the book. I much preferred the style and refreshingly different perspective of "The Lion, the Legend and the Coal-Miner's Daughter" by Anne Mayhew, who was Clapton's girlfriend for a while in the 1980's. There seem to be some disagreements with "Motherless Child", for instance the location of the bat incident. I wonder which version is correct? The Lion, the Legend and the Coal-Miner's Daughter: the biography of a brief fling
