Nathan Nightbridge is a genius at getting away with murder. . . or is he? True, people who offend him have a way of turning up dead, but maybe he has bad relationship karma. Nathan beats the court system so many times he develops a cult following. Some see him as an ice-cold sociopath, but perhaps he's just shy. Nathan's story is told by his deadbeat dad of a father, a double-psychotic homeless man who goes on and off his meds. When Dad is not hounded by the CIA or called back to his home planet, he spies on his son from afar. Dad is the bum in the alleyway that no one notices. He grins from the edges of our bad dreams. And Nathan is his pride and joy. Dad also may have more than a little something to do with the murders. When he steps forward to meet Nathan, everything gets resolved. . . but not in the way one might expect. Life is as unknowable as death in this dark comedy that celebrates love in all its debauchery.

Deadbeat Dad is a novel about a man who's mind is out of sorts watching the life of his son at a distance. I think this might be one of the first novels I've read where it's written in the first person of someone who's watching the events of another's life. You do get to know the dad quite well, but the focus of the story is on Nathan, a boy who may have inherited his dad's issues, or who just has a string of some very bad luck and happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. The novel flows nicely through the Nathan's life, introducing some great characters along the way and giving one of the better endings I've read from a lesser known writer in a long time.Highly recommend this one.

I've read four of Bloch's novels, two of which I purchased for my Kindle. I've really enjoyed three out of four. Each book has a distinct point of view, and this novel is among the three I have liked most. Deadbeat Dad departs from Bloch's previous work, in style, tone, theme, and voice. Bloch takes a seriously twisted and dark, satirical and smart approach to skewering celebrity-obsessed American culture. But Bloch doesn't stop there. He uses his razor-sharp wit and amazingly accurate observations to skewer, in addition to celebrity culture, the criminal justice system, the "help" professions, higher education, the arts and entertainment business, the pharmaceutical business, the gun lobby, and the sad trend toward dumbing-down America. I alternately laughed aloud and scratched my head while gobbling up this novel. I could hardly put it down. In fact, I was late to work this morning because I just HAD to finish the book to learn what happened to our first-person narrator and our protagonist (who may or may not actually be an antagonist). Good job, Dr. Bloch!

Unique and interesting. The author, JP Block, did a great job presenting the book in this fashion. This is also my first by Mr. Block but, I will be exploring more. The story moved right along without a lot of boring fillers yet it left nothing lost to the reader from chapter to chapter. The main Character, Nathan, was raised by a single mother who lost her opportunity to nab a rich husband by getting pregnant. The father ended up going insane and becoming a homeless bum, yet watched his son grow up by standing on the sidelines.Bad luck follows Nathan his entire life and he finds himself in and out of court rooms defending himself on murder charges. Even his own mother's!Of all the characters Nathan was definitely my favorite so I was very upset with the ending of the book. Speaking of endings, there were two twists I did not see coming and will not spill out here. This book is well worth anyone's time that enjoys a good story.I highly recommend this book!
