A very special book By Eakins Marvin and Ruth Sackner’s book, "The art of typewriting," highlights part of their unique Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry. As Sackner notes in an early chapter, he has been a collector virtually all of his life. In terms of concrete and visual poetry, however, Sackner cites 1975 as a pivotal year, the year he was introduced to the work of “polymath” Tom Phillips in that artist’s retrospective at the Basel Kunsthalle. Already art collectors, particularly of Russian Avant-Garde, the Sackners expanded their interests to include “…books, and magazines of Italian Futurism, Dada and Surrealism, and American expatriate books, in both Europe and the United States.” Over the years they added to and refined their vision with typewriting art as but one facet of it. Marvin Sackner writes that “we wanted to collect works with an historic core of concrete and visual poetic sensibilities from early twentieth century art movements…” as well as limited-edition books, drawings, paintings, collages, prints and manuscripts that combined word and image."The art of typewriting" reminds us that an impersonal machine, the typewriter, can be used to create works of art by human manipulation. The journey for the reader begins before one opens the book: each cover has a different image. The informative introductory chapters give the reader context for the images that follow. Organized into 37 short sections that include alphabet texts, overtyped characters, patterns, portraits and landscapes, erotica, and political texts, the diversity of typewriter art exemplifies visual richness. Some images are incredibly complex while others are minimalist. Some play with the physicality of letters and words while others make statements. There are images rely that rely on color while others focus on gradations of black. Negative space may supersede positive space. Nearly all have a certain geometry to their structure but this may not be the first thing the reader notices. What one does notice—what intrigues the reader—is the doggedness of both artist and collector in this very special book.

Not just an excellent history of the art created on typewriters, there are hundreds of full color examples exhibiting an incredible variety of styles and concepts.There are also interesting biographies of some of the artists. This edition makes each copy a unique work of book art itself--your copy will have different covers than mine. It's rare for a commercially produced book to capitalize on the newest printing technology with a notion like this--and particularly impressive when it extends the content of a book about artworks produced with a 19th century typographic technology.
