The author presents a bombshell puzzle so startling that it seems incredible that there could be any solution at all! But there is indeed a solution moreover, one that requires a chain of lesser puzzles to be solved first. The reader is thus taken on a journey through a maze of subsidiary problems that has all the earmarks of an entertaining detective story. This book leads the unwary reader into deep logical waters through seductively entertaining logic puzzles. One example is Boolean algebra with such weird looking equations as 1+1=0 a subject which today plays a vital role, not only in mathematical systems, but also in computer science and artificial intelligence.

Excellent writing, terrible presentation By Rob Menke Smullyan always is a clear and entertaining writer, but in this case his message was muddled by a ridiculous number of transcription errors. Dropped words (in one case rendering a puzzle unsolvable) plus errors in the formulae turned a pleasant read into a red pencil exercise in frustration. I hope Polimetrica takes better care when publishing future works.I sill would have bought the book because I enjoy Smullyan's other books, but I wish I had known this one would be rough around the edges. If you like Smullyan then by all means buy this, but if you are just being introduced please start with another book.

By Stephen Daly Okay, let's say you're someone who might be labelled a "math whiz," at least by yourself. And, of course, "math whiz" implies "logic whiz." So you can dispatch problems like "the third baseman's wife is the pitcher's sister" in your sleep. And here comes Raymond Smullyan, usually starting out with Knights and Knaves, (which are easily dispatched unless you are not Raymond Smullyan.) And believe me--knights and knaves are wind sprints when you're winding up for an Iron-Man.If you really like stretching your brain, get a Smullyan book.

It does, however, take a certain level of Mathematical maturity to read as some of the ideas build for several chapters (almost like a Math textbook). There are a moderate number of typos as one of the other reviewers mentioned. In some cases, these errors do make the book more difficult to read. Still, a nice book.
