Love thy sexy jerk of a neighbor...
CEO Michael Anderson might be something of a "control freak." Still, he's not quite sure why his therapist thinks dogsitting will fix anything?especially since he and the canine share a kind of mutual loathing. And to make matters worse, a house sitter moves in next door disrupting his peace-and his dates-with the worst possible music at the worst possible time... every time.
Free-spirited artist Mia Argaropolis has settled into the perfect gig-housesitting in NYC's Upper West Side while working as an art therapist. Too bad she's stuck living next door to a bossy control freak with a penchant for calling building security when she blasts music to drown out the noises coming through his bedroom wall.
Post-apocalyptic dinner rolls that nearly take her kitchen with them, a douchebag ex, and a Shih Tzu with the personality of Godzilla attack Mia in one day, and her unlikely neighbor comes to the rescue. Like it was her fault. And now, somehow, they find themselves engaged? Both agree, this neighborly feud just got taken to a whole new level.

She housesits for people who are on vacation or otherwise out of town, enabling her to always have a place to live without actually having to find a place to live. Her latest housesitting job has her in an apartment next door to bossy control freak Michael Anderson. Michael brings home dates, they get noisy, Mia blasts music to drown them out, Michael calls building security on her, lather, rinse, repeat. This happens often enough that eventually the owner of the apartment calls Mia and kicks her out.Michael’s therapist thinks he’s too rigid and controlled. She gives him her dog for three weeks to take care of while she’s on vacation. Her only stipulation is that he take care of the dog himself, not hire a dogsitter or board the dog. She hopes this will disrupt his carefully scripted life and shake him up a little bit. Michael just wants his life to continue on as it has. He has no time for free-spirited artists or small dogs. This was a bit of a mixed read for me. I liked Michael a lot. Watching him deal with Clancy, the dog, was a lot of fun, and as a fairly set-in-her-ways person myself, I liked watching him grow out of his comfort zone a bit and have his life shaken up a bit. After one too many calls to building security resulted in Mia becoming essentially homeless, he offered to let her stay with him. And, frankly, this is where Mia sort of lost me. I get that she’s a free spirit. She doesn’t have rules, she does/says/behaves/wears whatever she wants. But she’s almost as rigid in her determination to be adorably flaky as Michael is in his own life. She’s a guest in this man’s apartment, staying there only because he feels somewhat guilty about his role in losing her the housesitting gig, and yet she instantly treats it like an art studio, lining the floors with garbage bags, painting everywhere, leaving her paintbrushes all over the place, her clothes everywhere, snooping through his things, rearranging his stuff. This man clearly likes his apartment to have some semblance of order, but she completely disregards that in favor of being rigidly uninhibited.I was also a little frustrated with their big misunderstanding that led to their breakup. Mia jumps to conclusions about something, and Michael, instead of saying “This is what actually happened” stands there while she’s ranting, and says things like “You misunderstood” and “It’s not what you think” and “Let me explain”. If someone is grossly misinterpreting my actions, I don’t stand there spouting platitudes, I jump right in with “The man you saw me having dinner with was my brother!” or “We’re setting up a surprise party!” or whatever the explanation was. I realize this would end the conversation in about three seconds and not allow the breakup to move forward, but I really hate it when I see that. It’s so frustrating because that’s not how people have conversations. And I realize that this all sounds like I didn’t like the book. I did. I liked Michael more than Mia, and I thought she needed to do the groveling at the end more than he did, but I really liked their balance. I’d like to see them in about a year, see how they’ve managed to even each other out, Mia making Michael a little more spontaneous, Michael making Mia see that she can survive as an artist who actually keeps her brushes in one place. I thought they had great chemistry, and I really appreciated how he always called her out when she started to doubt herself or put herself down. I liked Michael’s brothers a lot, too. Apparently his brother William has already had his book, and I’ll check that out, too; it sounds intriguing. Overall, I thought this was a fun, quick read.

I have to say Marissa did not disappoint me in this book. Michael Anderson is your typical CEO corporate, control freak and playboy. Mia Argaropolis is your typical free spirited and flighty women. Or are they? When these two meet up it is not a match made in heaven. It is quit the opposite. These two are so far from the same and yet they have compassion even if one hides it. This books is good read and I would recommend it to my family and friends. It is about growth and love and learning who one is. Two people balancing the other out and ultimately seeing beyond the surface. I loved the dog in this book he plays a big part in this book. Clancy has a huge part in this book. He helps in more ways than one to bring these two together. Buy he is also good for the soul. Thank you Marissa for another great read. I can't wait for the next installment of the next Anderson brother.

The same goes for the ones that hold on to their control the tightest. When they lose the long-held control, they do it spectacularly. In the second book of the Anderson Brothers series, the oldest brother, Michael, is about to spiral out of control. He is fostering a dog for his therapist, working on the biggest deal of his career, and not getting anything done in the bedroom (sleep or otherwise) due to the house sitter in his neighbor's apartment.Mia is a nomad, moving from one house sitting job to the next, with only one real constant in her life, the group of ladies she instructs in an art therapy class at the local retirement home. She does not realize that her way of life is more about protecting herself from heartache than being able to make connections with people. After Mia and Michael have a terrible first meeting, Michael feels horrible when Mia's ex shows up and says some of the very same things Michael did. Michael butts in hoping to help the situation and ends up declaring himself Mia's fiancé.From this point on, I did not have any idea how Marissa Clarke was going to spin this story. The couple's explosive attraction was evident from the first touch, but I never guessed Mia would be the one to hold back. Clarke surprised me at every turn and thrilled me with every kiss. Each kiss was like an event. Some authors get to wordy and descriptive about kisses, passion, and sex. Clarke did not do that here. The couple's first three kisses were like a getting pulled onto the dance floor when your favorite song begins to play, completely spontaneous and uninhibited. Michael's carefully planned life gets upended and, in the long run, he begins to love the mess.I haven't read the first book in the series, Sleeping with the Boss, but if it is anywhere close to the phenomenal caliber of writing that Neighbors with Benefits is, I will move it to the top of my TBR list. Thanks so much to Marissa Clarke and Entangled Lovestruck for granting me with a copy of Neighbors with Benefits in exchange for an honest review.
