By HopeSpirit I grew up in the 70’s fascinated by the quirky and thought-provoking repeat episodes of The Twilight Zone. As an adult, I didn’t maintain the same interest and never found myself curious about the life of its creator, Rod Serling. That is… until now. I was drawn to this book when I heard the author speak publicly about Serling’s involvement in War Games under the Kennedy administration and also how he was a powerful advocate and professor of human rights (in all forms) and the need for Americans’ to find their voice and speak it. Suddenly, my view of this man was completely changed from an eerie voice at the opening of The Twilight Zone to a man of substance, depth and action. I was hooked!I could not wait to purchase the book and read more. I was not disappointed. The author does a remarkable job of bringing this man to life. I get why the book is titled “Unknown Serling,” because he was truly unknown to me until now. The chapter about the war games ("Jeopardy Room") read like a spy thriller. I almost cannot believe that the federal government invited this man to a secret “game” which was really an exercise in “what if’s;” including a scenario about a leader of a Middle Eastern oil-rich country becoming powerful and calling on his countrymen to form Jihad against the U.S. (this is in the early 60’s, mind you!). I hesitate to give anything else away because I believe each reader should experience this story for themselves. It almost sounds make believe, but the author clearly illustrates that she is writing from 10 years of in depth research, including all of these never before release documents.Johnston has the ability to write with an intelligent voice, but in a way that anyone can understand. Just like Serling didn’t tell you what to think, neither does this author. They both give you the facts, and allow the reader (or viewer) to come up with their own conclusions, theories and beliefs. But they also make that extra push, encouraging us as readers to drop our cloaks of apathy and pick up our swords of convictions. To feel. To act. To be a part of what is going on in our own back-yards and around the world. To fight for injustice, to speak for those who do not have a voice, and above all, to view war with open eyes and see the sacrifice that is made for our “freedom” every day. And then to ask ourselves, “Is it worth it?”This book got me pumped up. I am huge fan of Rod Serling now, as well as this author that has finally brought his fascinating life’s story to light. I can’t wait for the next installation in the series.I have one final thought: if you are debating whether to purchase this book or not, go for it! The price is beyond reasonable and you can read only the chapters that interest you for they are each their own story (but I bet you’ll end up reading them all!). I guarantee this book will make you feel. Whether it’s interest or disinterest, it will make you think and form your own opinion. I have now discovered that this is what Rod Serling wanted. Who knew? What a great part of our history.

An intriguing look into the Serling archive provides new insights By Jodie Peeler Johnston's work, the first in a planned series, is vital reading for true Serling fans. Taking advantage of archival access and new interviews, Johnston provides new insights into what motivated some of Serling's most memorable work, his relationship with the U.S. government, and how his wartime experiences shaped his worldview and influenced his writings. Of particular value is a well-done analysis of Ray Bradbury's accusations that Serling was a plagiarist, and Johnston's research into the matter informs the best take on the dispute I've yet read. Some typographical issues and detail errors keep me from giving this the full five stars, but as a Serling fan of long standing, I devoured this and really look forward to the coming sequels. It's valuable work.
