By Walls For many black and brown (pre)teens in any major city USA, "Meherrin and the Murder Mystery of Jason Blackwell" is a familiar narrative. This story carefully and creatively blends reality and fiction in the way it depicts it's multi-dimensional characters and the history behind their situations. It refuses to shy away from it's underlying message of seeking truth and resolution, even at the expense of the reader's comfort. Brutally descriptive in its portrayal of current day teens and the struggles they face.It's an addictive read that tosses you down a tunnel of suspense, turmoil, grief, anger, knowledge, mystery, perseverance, history, friendship, and most importantly: triumph.The only fault to be found in this novella is that it wasn't longer. However, we're sure that Ms. Thornton has solidified her literary future through the use of Meherrin's story, and we all can't wait to read what's next.
