Political analyst Earl Ofari Hutchinson is best known as an African-American commentator on politics, race and social issues. Yet, for decades he has inhabited another world that seemingly is as far removed from the day’s political and social conflicts that he specializes in discussing and writing about as the sun and the moon. It’s the world of Western Classical Music. He has long had an enduring love and passion for the music and has written and commented about it on his radio shows and in his columns. Now, in his forthcoming book, Beethoven and Me: A Beginner’s Guide to Classical Music, Hutchinson breaks through a hard barrier that has long separated politics and social commentary from music, in this case classical music. He shares his many personal experiences in concert halls and his observations about the world of classical music. Beethoven and Me: A Beginner’s Guide to Classical Music is a fast paced, easy to understand survey of the music’s well-known and not so well-known composers, their music and their struggles for recognition. He brings a fresh and his very personal perspective in discussing them and their music. Hutchinson makes it easy for the reader by deliberately minimizing using technical terms and language. Throughout the book, he provides the reader with a highly personal running commentary of his experiences in front of and behind the orchestra stage during two decades of active listening and commenting on classical music. Along the way, he details the influence and struggles of African-American, Hispanic and women composers in the classical music world who more often than not have been shamefully neglected or marginalized in the classical music tradition. Beethoven and Me: A Beginner’s Guide to Classical Music is Hutchinson’s personal, and very selective, impressionistic walk through the history, tradition and experience of classical music. It’s a primer written for a very beginning listener. Hutchinson has boldly stepped out of his role as a political and social commentator to show that music and the compelling social issues of the day need not be separate.

More Than Just Music Composed by a Bunch of Dead Guys By Marta Cheng For the uninitiated, classical music is usually boring music (without words) “composed by a bunch of dead guys”. Beethoven and Me by Earl Ofari Hutchinson gives readers an eye-opening interpretation to a genre of music that is both comprehensive as well as personal. Hutchinson provides a nuts and bolts overview into his beloved genre of music that has withstood the passage of time and also gives witness to the author’s deep love and appreciation for it. He speaks on the subject matter with authority, reverence and a connection gained after years of exposing himself whole-heartedly to the music and its composers. Covering some of his favorite classical terms like the sonata, the quartet, the oratio, the overture, the concerto and offering recommended listening for each, Beethoven and Me includes a plethora of valuable information as he overviews the last 300 years of classical music in such a way that is not only informative but also entertaining. He breathes new life into a “bunch of dead guys and their music”, if you will. Bravo, Mr. Hutchinson, bravo!

By Rich "Beethoven and Me" by Mr. Earl Hutchinson is quite a piece of work. It's everything you ever wanted to know about classical music and its major players. Not being that much of an aficionado, I was still greatly impressed with the exhaustive research, love, and expertise that went into this book. I found it so compelling that I went to Spotify and turned on its "Relaxing Classical" selection and listened while I read. What beautiful music. It spoke to my soul, and yes I know how that must sound— but still no less true. Bravo Mr. Hutchinson and thank you for the journey. Wonderful!

The Seventh Symphony “is one of the happiest products of my poor talents.” —Beethoven By Grady Harp Author Earl Ofari Hutchinson has written and published widely on the themes of Politics, Race and social issues – and MUSIC. He earned his MA in Humanities from California State University, Dominguez Hills (including the Humanities course series on the advanced study of music, focusing on concepts of meaning and form in music). A member of the American Musicological Society. Earl has programmed, featured and promoted classical music on the KPFK-Pacifica Radio Network. Having attended hundreds of concerts and music festivals he has written about music in this columns, offered preconcert lectures and has completed the Comprehensive Music Study Series based on The History of Western Music at West Los Angeles College and studied music theory and history at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music. In other words, Earl’s exposure to classical music is thorough on every level, in every category of music, and it is this knowledge that he brings to this immensely entertaining and informative book.As the synopsis of this book states, ‘Beethoven and Me: A Beginner’s Guide to Classical Music is a fast paced, easy to understand survey of the music’s well-known and not so well-known composers, their music and their struggles for recognition. He brings a fresh and his very personal perspective in discussing them and their music. Hutchinson makes it easy for the reader by deliberately minimizing using technical terms and language. Along the way, he details the influence and struggles of African-American, Hispanic and women composers in the classical music world who more often than not have been shamefully neglected or marginalized in the classical music tradition.’Simply reading the list of divisions of his discussion offers a rather solid survey to the scope of the book: A Guide to My Favorite Classical Terms, A Guide to the Baroque, A Guide to African-American Classical Composers, A guide to More Baroque, A Guide to Hispanic Classical Composers, A Guide to the Three Giants (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven), A Guide to Women Classical Composers, A Guide to Opera, A Guide to the Soloist, A Guide to the Romantics, A Guide to More of the Romantics, A Guide to America’s Classical Greats, A Guide to the Classical Future and A Guide to the Classical Jargon. And form these stances he offers fascinating insights ‘From My Concert Seat’ as well as references for listening to each of the composers he discusses.Earl repeatedly makes it clear that this book is for Beginners - those new to the world of Classical Music. But this author is far deeper than that designation would indicate – this book is a solid Introduction to music as well as any book available. It comes not only form his brain but also from his heart – the true home of classical music. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, October 15
