Jeffrey is an atheist, living an ordinary life in England when God pays him an unexpected visit. God needs his help in His crusade to convince humanity to stop destroying their world. So, nothing difficult then. The deity’s actions, however, are severely restricted by The Committee of angels now in control of the bureaucracy that Heaven has become. But God should be able to work around that, right? Once convinced to help Him, Jeffrey will need to find a way to help God reach humanity while working within these rules. The two of them will embark on a crusade seeking help from anyone willing to listen to them. Their task not be easy but God and Jeffrey are determined to overcome all obstacles in their path. Unfortunately, Metatron, the former voice-of-God and head of The Committee, is determined to stop God any way he can, even sending a demon to follow the deity. He might even have to kill his former boss but only if it's really necessary. And he'll even try not to enjoy it but no promises. Featuring a cast with some of the bible’s best and least known figures, this unique tale of religious satire will keep you laughing until the end of the world.

Jeffrey, however, is greeted by God...and surprised to find the Omnipotent Deity to be completely bound by the Heavenly bureaucracy.God needs Jeffrey to help him save the Earth from the ravages of humanity. The problem is that humanity doesn't listen to anyone...let alone a God who is bound by His own bureaucracy to not use His Godly powers to reveal Himself. This is an interesting premise and I found it intriguing. The story is humorous and lighthearted; but the problem God's trying to save us all from...is heart attack serious. Mankind is, indeed, laying waste to the only home we all have. We do have the infinite capacity to bring about our own extinction.Only an Atheist is a thought provoking read. I recommend it. Do enjoy.

This book is full of British-isms which I love (I'll call a friend "git" by the end of the day) and he tells a compelling tale about God needing an atheist's help to save the world. This God isn't all-powerful anymore. He's slowed down by bureaucracy but always has time for spot of tea, preferably with some carbs on the side. It's fast-paced, generally light in tone, and keeps you thinking and guessing. You'll want to save the world after finishing.

When I finally broke my programming I started looking with interest at the culture atheists have built for themselves. This book has quickly become one of my favorite pieces of that culture. This story is written from the point of view of the gruff and temperamental God of the Bible who came to grips with the reality eons ago that he simply shouldn't be trusted with absolute power given his anger problems. And so he set up a bureaucracy that managed the universe in his place. Now, the bureaucracy is corrupt and the Earth is headed towards a self inflicted ecological apocalypse. What is a deity to do?This is a good read and one I highly recommend. Fun and laughs for everyone and well worth the read. Five stars!

Letters from the Earth, by Mark Twain

Amazon.com Review If you're already familiar with Finn and Sawyer, perhaps this collection of fragments, short stories, and essays--assembled posthumously some few decades ago now, but still fresh--will enhance your sense of Twain's true range. A particular favorite: his essay "The Damned Human Race," wherein he proves, rather convincingly, that an anaconda snake is a higher form of life than an English Earl.

Review Twain sentimentalists will gasp, Bible-belters will turn purple, austere stylistic purists will raise eyebrows -- but dyed-in-the-wool Twain enthusiasts will grab hungrily for what amounts to a new volume by the 'Lincoln of our literature' ... The pages in this volume range from furious to funny, from deadly earnestness to frothy wordplay. --Library Journal

From the Publisher "It's easy to imagine Samuel Clemens (aka Mark Twain) and Carl Reiner as best of friends, had not the one died 10 years before the other was born. Twain would have enjoyed Reiner's work in "Your Show of Shows," "The 2000 Year Old Man," and "The Dick Van Dyke Show," just as Reiner clearly appreciates Twain's humor." Audiofile

Shaking Foundations and Prodding Sacred Cows By Lena Guyot I first read "Letters from the Earth" in 1962, when I was a highschool student in Redding, CT. Redding was the last home of Mark Twain, and those who held his literary legacy as sacred, his library as a shrine, were definitely upset and embarrased when it was published. All this made it compelling reading for an adolescent who was beginning to notice the inconsistencies, hypocrisies and downright insanities of human belief. "Letters from the Earth" shook loose the stones of my foundation: a service for which I'll be forever grateful. Including himself in his witty attack on Earthly Man's frailties, Twain's observations encouraged me to trust my own perceptions, prod sacred cows, and ultimately to forgive myself for being at best, "a nickel-plated angel".I've read, reread, and revered most of Twain's legacy, but I think of this particular book as a treasurebox full of letters from a brilliant, irascible but loving uncle each of us should have known sometime in our lives. I only wish I'd remembered to share it with my own kids when they were adolescents. I must make amends right now...AFTER I've reread it myself.

If you are looking for a free-wheelin' adventure story along the lines of Tom Sawyer or Huck Finn, you will not only be disappointed, but most probably shocked. However, if you are looking for an entire book of irrevent writings - as I was - then that's not what you're getting, either. Something less than half of the book (say, roughly, 1/3) consists of deliciously irrevent writings, drained from Mark Twain's pen of bitter ink. The best among these is the title section, "Letters From The Earth", in which Satan writes back to archangels Gabriel and Michael about his visit to earth and the "human race experiment", after his banishment from heaven. In these letters, Mark Twain points out various absurtities and illogical assertions and beliefs about human religions, and unflinchingly describes the vanity and hypocrisy of many of its adherents. I was under the impression that the entire book consisted of these letters; however, I was wrong. It is merely the first section of the book, occupying some 30-50 pages. For people who are highly into this kind of writing, however - as I am - it is worth the price of admission alone. There are several other pieces in the book along this line - including the famous essays Was The World Made For Man? and The Lowest Animal - which display not only Mark Twain's essential pessimism, but his very rational mind and hilarous wit. These pieces are an absolutely essential read for the lover of satire: few better examples are to be found anywhere in literature. The rest of the book, however, is a mixed bag. It consits of various pieces from the "Mark Twain Papers" - a collection of his writings (mostly unfinished) the he decreed to have published sometime after his death. Among these are a few interesting pieces (most of them various satires, several on religious topics), while others are more broadly ranging: everything from a completely improvised tale that he used to put his two children to bed to an unfinished fantasy piece that the editor seems to attach rather a lot of importance to, but whose actual virtue is somewhat more questionable. These pieces range from vaguely interesting to mildly funny to downright boring. Several would've probably been better served by being included in other volumes, while several should probably have been left unpublished. Still, there are definitely some essential writings in this volume that any fan of Mark Twain - or satire, or irrevent writings, for that matter - will want to read.

They cover a wide span of subject matter ranging from critiques of the prose style of another writer to the author's construction of the Old Testament and God from the perspective of Satan. In addition to Letters From Earth (Satan's), the contents includes Papers of the Adam Family, The Damned Human Race, Something About Repentance, Was the World Made For Man, In the Animal's Court, The Intelligence of God, The Lowest Animal and others.Readers who are offended by careful examinations of the meaning and implications of holy or sacred writings of the Old Testiment will not enjoy this book. The author, whatever his actual religious beliefs, probably wasn't an Old Testiment Christian. In this series of short writings he takes specific stories from the OT and holds them into the light away from the long traditions that accompany them in most of our minds. He examines the evidence of the stories for hints of what sort of creature God must be if the OT is true. He extropolates what Satan might be.I'm an admirer of this author and I believe everything he ever wrote is worth reading and digesting. I put this book alongside his best. But I also admit that if I harbored a microbe of religious fanatic somewhere inside me I'd be hard-pressed to enjoy reading Letters From the Earth.

Style. Beauty. Passion. Vision. These are just a few of the words often used to describe the films of the single most celebrated director in Italy, and one of the most important directors the world has ever known—Federico Fellini. Fifty years since their initial releases, his films of the 1960s still inspire, shock, and delight. More than just encapsulating the ’60s, these films also helped define the style of the decade. With a staggering twelve Academy Award nominations between his four feature films during this period, Fellini reached the heights of fame, film artistry, and worldwide prominence. Studied, analyzed, and re-released over the years, these films continue to amaze each new generation that discovers them. Their impeccable style makes them timeless. Their images make them unforgettable. Their passion brings them to life. And their singular vision makes them unique in all of cinema.Fellini: The Sixties is a stunning photographic journey through the director’s most iconic classics: La Dolce Vita, 8½, Juliet of the Spirits, and Fellini Satyricon. Carefully selected imagery from the Independent Visions photographic archive, many published here for the first time, illuminate these films as they have never been seen before, and reveal fascinating details of the director’s working style and ebullient personality. With more than 150 photographs struck from original negatives, these images spring to life from the page with the depth and quality of the films themselves. Complemented with insightful essays from contemporary writers, Fellini: The Sixties is a true testament to the man and his work, a remarkable compendium of the legendary filmmaker’s greatest achievements.About TCM:Turner Classic Movies is the definitive resource for the greatest movies of all time. It engages, entertains, and enlightens to show how the entire spectrum of classic movies, movie history, and movie-making touches us all and influences how we think and live today.

A Fellini Feast for the Eyes By Amazon Customer This new look at Federico Fellini is a feast for the eyes, and an insightful re-evaluation of one of pop culture’s true innovators. Though I am admittedly not a huge Fellini fan, I bought this book as a present for a friend and was blown away by the unique images and glorious colors. The essays are interesting, and perfect for those of us who are not immersed in all things Fellini—this book makes the director and his most iconic films accessible to anyone, especially younger people who were born long after the films were generating controversy. Looking at the arresting and bizarrely beautiful photos, and reading the intro by Anita Ekberg and the afterword by Barbara Steele, it’s easy to see why Fellini’s movies created a stir.As the title implies, Fellini: The Sixties only covers the films he made in the 1960s, and I suppose for die-hards it only skims the surface of the director’s career. But the behind-the-scenes photos from the films are amazing, and speak volumes about the era. Each ‘60s movie has its own section with pictures and quotes from Fellini himself, his actors and actresses, and celebrity admirers of his work. The book is so stunning, from the elegant cover to the quality of the paper, I was tempted to rip out some of the pages to frame on my wall! When you get to the color sections of Juliet of the Spirits, Toby Dammit and Satyricon, you’ll know what I mean. The best endorsement I can give this book is to say that it made me want to re-watch the Fellini films I have seen, and seek out those I have yet to watch. The text gives you just enough open your eyes to the strange beauty of these films, from the disillusioned socialites in La Dolce Vita (who are not so different from the jaded hipsters of today) to the tremendous impact 8½ has had on our culture to the origin of the costumes in Satyricon. Fellini: The Sixties is an inspiring tribute to the man and his films... whether you've seen all or none of them.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Lot's of Photos By Loves the View Although the male protagonists wear suits and the leading women have rigid hair styles and evening gowns, these films are the beginning of a freer cinema. The sophisticates create their own dialog as they are spliced in with circus and night club performers, priests, beach parades, antiquities and other random characters and settings. These photos remind the reader how much Fellini’s films are wed to their time and place. The images stand in contrast to those of fascism which had gripped Italy for two generations not too long before. They also contrast to the casual/no style that Fellini’s US fans were evolving. The text includes an introduction by Anita Ekberg, and quotations from Roger Ebert, Bob Dylan, Terrance Stamp and many others. Author/compiler Manoah Bowman writes on the content and technical aspects of the films. Like most coffee table books, the text is overshadowed by the photos. The photos are plentiful and give a good feel for the films on their own, as well as with the text.I’m not sure how or if today’s young people relate to Fellini’s movies or how his oeuvre will be viewed in the future. Will future generations appreciate the leap these films make from all that had come before? Will later generations dwell on their rambling nature and the gratuitous sexuality (and sex)? The book seems to capture this time, a mostly b&w time, of experimentation in cinema.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Lonely Dawns By Brad Baker "Fellini: The Sixties" by Manoah Bowman is a colossal homage to Federico Fellini. Supported by well-written text, the basis of the book is 150 glossy photographs(many full-page) struck from original negatives. Some have never been seen before. Very powerful, these images conjure up an artist who transferred his dreams, fears, memories, and passion into living motion picture magic. Magic. Today, we have Wes Anderson, but, perhaps, nothing like the Italian. "Fellini: The Sixties" focuses on one ten-year period of the genius. Here, among others, are "La Dolce Vita(1960)", his first great masterpiece, "8 1/2(1963)", a wandering fantasy about Fellini himself, who can't decide how to end the movie he is directing. Here also is "Fellini Satyricon(1969)", perhaps his finest work, a psychedelic color-fest; a crossroads of ancient venal Rome, and today's modern Eternal City. The book has a foreword by Anita Ekberg("He invented the word Paparazzi") and a comment by the lovely Barbara Steele. Roger Ebert sums it up: "I have heard theories that Fellini's "La Dolce Vita" is about the seven deadly sins, and takes place on the seven hills of Rome. But I never looked into them. That would reduce the movie to a crossword puzzle. I prefer it as an allegory, a cautionary tale of a man without a center. Fellini'shero is a gossip columnist, Marcello, who chronicles the 'sweet life' of aristocrats, second-rate movie stars, old playboys, and women. The role was played by Marcello Mastroianni. The two Marcellos--character and actor--flowed together into a handsome, weary, desperate man, who dreams of someday doing something good, but is trapped in a life of empty nights and lonely dawns". Federico Fellini died in 1993. He's gone now. No. No I'm wrong. He'll never be gone.

William Edward Burghardt Du Bois was a black civil rights activist, leader, Pan-Africanist, sociologist, educator, historian, writer, editor, poet, and scholar. He became a naturalized citizen of Ghana in 1963 at the age of 95. "The time has not yet come for a complete history of the Negro peoples. Archaeological research in Africa has just begun, and many sources of information in Arabian, Portuguese, and other tongues are not fully at our command; and, too, it must frankly be confessed, racial prejudice against darker peoples is still too strong in so-called civilized centers for judicial appraisement of the peoples of Africa. Much intensive monographic work in history and science is needed to clear mooted points and quiet the controversialist who mistakes present personal desire for scientific proof. Nevertheless, I have not been able to withstand the temptation to essay such short general statement of the main known facts and their fair interpretation as shall enable the general reader to know as men a sixth or more of the human race. Manifestly so short a story must be mainly conclusions and generalizations with but meager indication of authorities and underlying arguments." - W. E. B. Du Bois

The Negro, by W. E. B. Du Bois

From Library Journal Surprisingly, this 1915 title by one of our nation's most important African American writers has floundered in obscurity for decades. Du Bois here offers one of the earliest histories of African peoples and their cultures, from the devastation caused by European colonization to the lives of blacks in the early 20th century. This edition contains a new afterword by historian Robert Gregg. Essential for all libraries. Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Washington's Atlanta Compromise speech in his now famous The Souls of Black Folk which is required reading at most Black Studies Departments at universities throughout the United States in fact a typical United States History program may have you read it as well;however, DuBois book the Negro for which this review is about seems to be less popular and I find that many people have not read it and the historians who mention it rarely talk about it in detail, essentially the book gives a history of African people in Africa,America, and the Caribbean and talks about their accomplishments and struggles from ancient(5000B.C) to modern times(1915). After reading this book I now know why many programs rarely use this book I can't help but believe it is because the book is very Afrocentric in its structure.....I was shocked to find out that when it came to the history of ancient Africa Dubois has more in common with the afrocentrist Molefi Asante than many may realize and less in common with the more popular scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr.(regardless of whether he is a part of the W.E.B Dubois Department at Harvard) I saw Henry Louis Gates PBS documentary Wonders of the African World maybe about five years ago and I remember how skeptical he was about connecting Ancient Egypt to the rest of sub-saharan Africa......DuBois is not shy at all when he states that Egypt is indeed a part of Africa and that the people who founded Egypt were Negro(this was the word used at the time the book was written)Dubois was more radical than people realize he was one of the founders of Pan-African Congress I believe there were five in all, he would eventually leave the N.A.A.C.P abandon the idea of integration, become a socialist(The F.B.I had a file on him), move back to Africa and die in Ghana.....in fact Dubois would have more in common with his enemy Marcus Garvey(Dubois in his early career would criticize Garvey for his back to Africa movement)than he would realize. Its a great read for anyone interested in this African-American intellectual giant it may change your perspective on the man you think you know, but it should make you find him even more interesting. I will warn you that the book is dated it was written in 1915 so some of his theories are proven wrong, one example would be that Dubois at the time thought that man originated in the Middle East, thanks to the archaeological and DNA record we now know that man originated in Africa, but enjoy this book and may it increase our understanding of this great man

Millis This is often hard to read, not only because it's old and written in a rather long, drawn out style that was once used, but because of the content. I'm sure when it was written, this was seen as "pro-negro", but reading it from a modern perspective sometimes makes you cringe in areas. That said, however, I think it's important to see and understand history as it is, and this is part of that, so it has been interesting, though sometimes it gets a bit dull or uncomfortable for me.

Granted it may take most more than giving it a once over, but if you spend the time and effort to really get to know the book, and research exactly what the author is saying it is well worth the time that you took to understand it. A great read, and will challenge even the most agile mind.

Vincent, with his sadistic right hand man Frankie, seeks to expand his interests with his own brand of gangland psycho terrorism. James, a young music obsessive, leaves school determined to do life his way, dreaming of glory in a gang with guitars. But as two worlds collide will dreams become nightmares? WHAT THE READERS ARE SAYING "I loved it, the imagination, the images evoked by the prose and the skill involved in bringing it all together." "plenty of action, authentically snappy dialogue, some great imagery, utterly believable, well-rounded characters and a generous helping of humour." "With shifting narrative, complex and engaging characters, and an entertaining plot peppered with occasionally acerbic humour, Cowan’s sophomore offering shows none of the signs of that difficult second album." "Cowan is the master of entertaining dialogue. He allows us to connect with the characters through their rich and sometimes disgusting language." "I adored this book. It was face paced, exciting and full of humour. I couldn't wait to turn the page and finished it in a few days." PRAISE FOR ROBERT COWANS WORK: I don't know where Robert Cowan came from. Maybe he just appeared from a wormhole from the future. Maybe he was grown in a petri-dish and only unleashed on society when the scientists were satisfied that he wouldn't do any damage to us little people. Maybe. Probably not. Anyway, wherever he came from, he brought with him a quality book, and I'm glad he did." - Ryan Bracha, author of 'The Switched' and 'Dead man' trilogy "Cowan joins the ranks of a new breed of British novelists, telling their stories the way they want them told." - Mark Wilson, author of the 'dEadinburgh' and 'Lanarkshire Strays' series. "I have this thing about Scottish authors. There's a stack of really high quality writers putting out high grade work... And now in this list is Robert Cowan" - Keith Nixon, author of 'The Fix' and 'I'm dead again'. "The sort of dark humour Scottish writers excel at ... think Christopher Brookmyre"- Colin Wakeford, Musician "I expect many more great things coming by way of this author. I for one will certainly be the first in line to snatch them up." - Craig Furchtenicht, author of Dimebag Bandits.

It’s the story of a fledgling band taking its first steps on the rocky road to what its four members hope will bring fame and fortune, and it’s also the story of a young man taking his own first steps in the employment of local (and extremely nasty) gangster, Vincent.Although these two main threads are seemingly unrelated at the beginning, the author skilfully alternates between them and gradually weaves them together to culminate in an edge-of-the-seat climax. Along the way, there’s plenty of action, authentically snappy dialogue, some great imagery, utterly believable, well-rounded characters and a generous helping of humour.Robert Cowan clearly knows his stuff when it comes to being in a band and all the emotional turmoil that goes with it, but the gangster element of the book rings equally true to life. I only hope he doesn’t have first-hand experience of that too!A highly recommended read, and I’ll certainly be looking out for future books by this author.

Cowan’s lovely writing simply entertains and immerses the reader into a very real-feeling setting By Mark Wilson With his second offering, Robert Cowan has avoided any treading of water and built on the best of his debut, The Search for Ethan, developing his skillset substantially. With shifting narrative, complex and engaging characters, and an entertaining plot peppered with occasionally acerbic humour, Cowan’s sophomore offering shows none of the signs of that difficult second album. Instead Cowan’s lovely writing simply entertains and immerses the reader into a very real-feeling setting and into the lives of his very relatable characters. In Daydreams and Devils, we see a more confident Cowan, gaining his stride and stretching his literary legs, culminating in a novel that significantly betters his first novel, which itself was a very good book. Cowan deserves a larger readership and with offerings such as this book, he’s well on his way to producing an excellent body of work for new readers to discover and binge on.

By Maria recommend this book to people who like their stories brutally realistic without the airy-fairy bits. What could connect a publican bitter he'd lost his dream of becoming a professional football player, a boy who dreams of being a rock star and a particularly nasty bully/gangster? I certainly enjoyed finding out.The writing was fast paced and the dialogue gritty and realistic. This story could have taken place in the outskirts of any major British city. The observations are sharp and bring the story to life. Dark humour prevents the story becoming too depressing. There is violence in the book but it is integral to the story and the characters who enjoy inflicting pain. Beneath the violence and language there is isolation, fear, loyalty, friendship and the desire to belong. I especially liked the references to various music bands. An intriguing sharp read.

“Inventive, irreverent and relentlessly funny ... a superbly spun story about one of the most horrific moments of your life: the high school reunion. If John Hughes wrote a novel set in a high school boy's bathroom, this would be it.” - Warren P. Sonoda, Director, Swearnet, Trailer Park Boys, Total Frat Movie “Stalled, with its raw and authentic dialogue, credible characters and their compelling interwoven stories, is definitely worth a look.” - IndieReader Social media made it easy to find your ex, insult your enemies, and virtually punch someone in the face. In 1999 you had to go to your high school reunion. High school doesn't matter? High school is no big deal? Lies. What screwed you up? Your first crush? An asshole teacher? That embarrassing locker room incident? It still haunts you, and it may haunt you for the rest of your life. Set in the men's bathroom at a ten-year high school reunion, Stalled is a humorous story about regret, grudges, falling behind the curve, and having the guts to change your world when the chance presents itself. But don't look for selfless heroes and heroines in this story. Cheaters, liars, jerks, manipulators, and black widows. That's who's here. If you're squeamish or too PC, walk away. Stay, and you can root for their redemption, or hope for their public hanging.

This is a funny novel about a character stuck in an emotional rut during his high school reunion. I graduated from high school in the same year as the the characters, which made it easy to relate to. I enjoy reading stuff set in the time before the internet and texting took over, and the author takes us down memory lane with many references to that period, especially the music cues. It's structured in a way that you'll always have a good old tune playing in your head while you read. There's lots of drunkenness, sex, and more sex. It's dialogue-driven--like a good movie--with funny and embarrassing situations that will have you rooting for Rory and his predicament. I could picture Hollywood's former "brat pack" being perfectly cast if this had been a film of its time. It's socially aware, but not politically correct...and that's a good thing.

Having gone through my high school years in the 80s, I enjoyed all of the nostalgia. Brought back lots of great memories!!

League of Legends: The Guide for Parents By Devin Hurd A good read for anyone completely unfamiliar with the League of Legends scene, but if you've had access to Reddit and Twitter for the past two years and followed the game even remotely, this book holds nothing new. To me, this book felt like a summary for confused parents whose child has been playing League nonstop and are curious as to the game's history and what appeal it holds. I personally feel a little gyped that the author had the opportunity to follow players and teams, attend Worlds, get a chance for interviews and questions, and yet provided no new insight -- but at the same time the book was $2 for Kindle so I can't complain. Took about an hour to read.As an aside, I also felt the slight tinge of bias (or perhaps it was just due to the time spent with the team) against Cloud9. It was subtle, but there were a few passive aggressive passages about the team's internal issues that didn't seem to be brought up about other teams. Perhaps it was just me.

I have come to appreciate what they do. Hopefully Riot read this book and take some important things from this.

"Can artists change the world? I don't know. But if anyone is capable of doing so, then my money's on JR." —The Daily Telegraph

About the Author

JR first garnered international attention at age 27 when he won the TED Prize in 2011, which raised the question, 'Could art change the world?', to which his response was the Inside Out Project, which has since drawn nearly 200,000 participants internationally. His in-your-face black-and-white close-up portraits — pasted on buildings and streets, trains, buildings and monuments — allow locals to have presence and show ownership of their surroundings. He has worked across the globe - in France, the UK, USA, China, Brazil, Germany, Switzerland, Kenya, India and Cambodia amongst many more. His work has been exhibited at the Centre Pompidou, Paris; Tate Modern, London; the Rencontres d'Arles; and the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art.

The vocabulary in the puzzles starts out rather easy but gradually become more difficult as the book goes on. It won't teach you a language all by itself but it does make a nice, entertaining little supplement to other language products, courses or just as a way to brush up on your vocab in a language you haven't spoken in a while.I would definitely recommend these books. They're affordable, simple, and offer something to break up the tedium that some language learners experience.I have not had the opportunity to use these in a classroom setting but I think they could make an excellent tool for language teachers of pretty much any age..

Smith provides a number of tools for recording notes from lessons, setting goals, recording choreography, and so on. While this is common, she provides breakdowns of how to use these tools that provide a simple way to de-clutter thoughts about dance into useful, actionable information. While it is not an original concept, it is fantastic execution and usable by anyone from beginners to pros. I teach full time and am talking with my studio managers about basing some of our student records on Smith's work.

The rest of the book is a blank notebook. This is presented as a guide for a serious smooth ballroom dancer not a dance practice journal. Not worth it.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Developing page layouts and conceptual thinking already starts by hand, so why stop there? By N. Wu The act of drawing, sketching and lettering by hand is enormously popular, as Pinterest and Instagram feeds have evidenced. It’s a refreshing, cheap break from solid computer work that can be integrated back into digital design via Photoshop and other e-tools. The feeling of brisk experimentation, exploring new challenges, creative discoveries, and just doing things for the love of it versus following specific directives, is both cathartic and fulfilling from a personal growth perspective. It also brings forth a unique human identity, voice or personality to the creative product. Leaving one’s own imprint is what many strive to do, moreso in this DIY age where anonymous workers of big corporations diligently build with almost no acknowledgement or notice.Developing page layouts and conceptual thinking already starts by hand, so why stop there? This enjoyable, image-heavy collection of international packaging case studies (with a foreword by the always memorable and reflective Debbie Millman), covers a delightfully diverse range of handdrawn styles and techniques from graphic designers, illustrators and lettering artists alike. Four categories are covered, ranging from the spontaneity of DIY and the looseness of ART, to heightened details found in CRAFT and the obsessively intricate complexities of ARTISANAL works. The best part are the numerous close-up process sketches, explorations and developmental moodboards shared at length, along with backstories of how these diverse projects came together in their own way. In some cases, photos documenting drawing, painting and lettering processes are shown with support illustration or sketches where applicable. I appreciate how the personality of each letterer’s hand was retained right to the final product, as well as some exhaustive variations that were vital to informing what the final outcome would or should become. Some might see it as a waste of time and energy to work so broadly from a design development standpoint, but every sketch is beautiful in its own way and deserves its time in the sun, especially in this manner. And if that wasn’t enough, the book concludes with a not so little section titled, “Inside Outside the Box” with 7 pages of author Gail Anderson and Joe Newton’s super-tight lettering for the book’s four title spreads. I’d be hard-pressed to choose my favourite single version of each word, as they’ve skillfully and artfully demonstrated that although one may be a front-runner for each concept, there's always more than one way to solve a design problem. So rather than hunt around for the perfect typeface or font for your design problem, the solution might be right at hand. Or left. Or both, if you’re ambidextrous.

A wonderful range of hand-drawn projects that I have been referencing lately and using as design inspiration. I personally love progress shots and find the evolution of a project to be the most interesting part, and this book is chock full of early sketches and ideas by the designers. SUPER inspiring!
