1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A hilarious exchange By Jaime Rubin I just finished reading a volume of 8 of Chekhov's plays. The first 5 plays were of four acts each. Although there was some humor, the plays were fairly serious and in some cases, tragic. The last 3 works were short, one-act "jests." All 3 were funny, and "The Bear" was particularly hilarious. There is one exchange where the antagonists agree to a duel with pistols, but the man first has to demonstrate to the opposing lady how to fire a revolver! I still laugh when I think about it.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. an unquestionable comedy By Lkie Waterlogg "This is one of Chekhov's very short plays, an unquestionable comedy, as opposed to the author's full length dramas which he considered comedies, but which are certainly of a more serious ilk. The Bear condenses so much of human nature into this short, comical, bizarre, and ultimately triumphant act. Chekhov demonstrates how close (at times) is the relationship between anger and passion, and how strange and wonderful is the human condition." - Jack Coulehan, Annotated Nine Plays of Chekhov, Grosset & Dunlap
