0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great Year, Good Book By Margaret S. Verble I enjoyed this book and found it filled with interesting facts and, as far as I know, accurate. A lot has been said about 1927, and Shindo tries to fix the events of the year into an intellectual construct, essentially a dialectic of traditionalism vs modernity. While I appreciate his effort to provide a philosophical organization to the themes he touches upon, e.g., music, sport, movies, his prose sounds somewhat like an expanded dissertation, and I came away with a feeling that, at times, he was trying too hard to stuff everything into that box. However, that's a forgivable flaw in an essentially enjoyable book. .

8 of 12 people found the following review helpful. A Sondheim Treasure By Bill Ford Interiors, Inc. Sondheim is America's greatest and supreme composer, lyricist for the American theatre. This volume is priceless and covers his career through many fine essays written over the years. This is a must for all Sondheim admirers and anyone interested in the theatre. In one article Oscar Hammerstein is wrongly credited as introducing him to Bernstein and Laurents which resulted in his writing the lyrics for "West Side Story". My cousin Ruth Ford invited him at a cocktail party in her apartment in The Dakota in NYC and introduced him to them. When I first met Mr. Sondheim he shook and squeezed my hand and told me that Ruth's introduction got him the job with them.

Since Hostel and Saw series accumulated so much social commentary, it's a fresh perspective to consider how career savvy young filmmakers managed to get themselves noticed (and then moved on to other projects….goodbye fanboys, goodbye. --chuck kleinhans

And that is (swear to Zeus) my last gambling book purchase. Just as some people have a gambling addiction, I have a gambling book addiction. I keep thinking that the next gambling book will reveal to me the Holy Grail System. We all want to be winners (except for people who use gambling to reinforce their inadequacy complex and subconsciously lose to validate their victim status in life; not that I'd know anything about that). Even though I currently don't gamble, I might return to it some day. A long time ago, I used to play blackjack with my smart computer science friends who demanded that I always play perfect basic strategy and follow the card count. Wow, how exciting. And that dear readers is the crux of nearly all blackjack books/systems. You can not deviate from basic-to-advanced strategy; you must determine whether or not the deck is positive, and you can only bet up if the deck is positive. Well, this book by Roger LeBlanc is either genius or folly. He doesn't follow other blackjack books' strategies. I know that computer simulation models would probably dispell the system offered up in this book; however, should I ever find myself sitting down at a blackjack table again, I hope to follow his system. Why? His system is grandma simple. I can play his system without an advanced degree in math. What about the odds? The odds are for the long run. I might get to a casino for a few hours twice a year. Here's a secret: if the dealer is in Hoover-o-matic mode, your perfect strategy and positive count won't help much. If the dealer is losing, then LeBlanc's system with an increase-bets-as-you-win strategy might cover your other expenses for the trip. Counterpoint: if you are looking to make a living from blackjack, then perhaps another book might be a better starting point. Counterpoint to counterpoint: if you are unfamiliar with blackjack but want to play and just have some fun and possible luck, then this book is a great place to help you get a running start.

By Cleveland, Ohio I always enjoy new blackjack books to see what the unsung veterans of the game have discovered and what secrets they are willing to part with, but this is not the book for anyone who is looking for new winning strategies. After reading it through once and scanning it back and forth, I was unable to find a system at all. A few strategy points that differ from basic strategy (and most not in a good way, IMHO) and loads of generic (and sometimes contradictory) general advice told over and over and over again. Like the author, I don't count cards and never have, yet I have been fairly successful in my Vegas trips. I was looking for some sort of betting system or rationale, and there is none to be had in this book. Straight bets down the line. I don't know anybody who wins without varying one's bets, either because of mathematical expectation (card counting) or a betting progression system. Otherwise, that house edge grinds you down to nothing. I guess for someone who has never played blackjack or been to a casino, this book could be helpful in knowing what to expect and how to act when you get there, but as far as playing instruction goes, he could have written it on a flyer. The author doesn't touch upon any sort of situational basic strategy at all. In fairness, I agree with the way he handles bust hands (hard 15's and 16's), which deviates from the accepted basic strategy, but that's it.

It the dives into the author's personal experiences playing different hands and it offers his own strategy of play. I read this book while on a cruise and ended winning $500 in a BJ tournament. His advice are priceless and you may even win money from it!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. disappointing overall By Frugal Since the word tango is prominent in the title, you'd expect there to be a lotof tangos in this book of 108 pages. Sadly, not so. Of the 36 pieces only eightare tangos and 5 are milongas. And what about the word "traditional" in the title?Two of those few tangos and three of the milongas were composed by contemporaryBritish musicians (including the editors). Perhaps these are "in the Argentinian style"or have characteristics that justifies their inclusion in a collection of "traditional"pieces, I don't know. I would have preferred older compositions. [Later. At least oneof the modern pieces is really good, however.]Why include "El Choclo"? This is one of the most familiar tangos of all. The notes don't tell us.I give them credit for including "El Entrerriano" ("the man from Entre Ríos"), which they say isthe "first published tango, written in 1887." It is a muchmore elaborate statement of the piece than the earlier sheet music.I am also puzzled as to why the editors chose to publish the tangos in 4/4 rather than 2/4(as so many of the early tango imprints are). Go to todotango.com and look at the digitized tangosheet music. By far the most of them are in 2/4, while a few are in 4/8. Issuing them in 4/4--evidently amodern treatment--gives the pieces a stretched-out look. I don’t see what is gained by convertingold tangos in 2/4 to 4/4? Perhaps this explains some of the difficulty with rhythmexperienced by another reviewer. I found it so too.Even some of the "folk tunes" are composed by the editors! I freely admit that I knowabsolutely nothing about Argentinian folklore. But all but two of these "folk tunes" are in 6/8 time(the other two are in 3/4). This gets old after a while. If it really is representative of Argentinian folk music,I'd rather play something else. The melodies are occasionally reminiscent of the Andean pan pipes.And there are some rhythmic challenges for the left hand.The printing is not economical of space and many page turns are inconvenient. There are 6 pages ofhelpful notes at the end. I count 15 pieces thathave a part for a second accordion, slightly fewer than half. These second accordion parts generallyfollow the first accordion line closely. I saw nothing more than harmonies, nothing that could be considereda counter-melody or interesting "fill" (except in "El Entreriano”). There no fingerings for either hand, noneof those little lines under a bass note that suggest where to take the note. It's a British publication, after all, so they don't have to follow AAA-approved guidelines.I got a fresh used copy and did not pay full MSRP, but I would not buy it again. I think I prefer to find olderaccordion arrangements for accordion and to check those against the early imprints that can be found in todotango.comto adjust the bass side. Overall disappointing.

Not for the beginner, may be at the end of second year of practice. It will help if you have a teacher, the rhythms of tango (if you not born in Argentina, or Spain) are not easy.

Great resource for the cult movie fan By Bacterialover Back when I was in high school I found a copy of a VideoHound guide called Cult Flicks and Trash Picks. Armed with this reference source and memberships to some video stores (the small-town independent ones were always the best) I discovered the wonderful world of cult movies, the B- to Z-grade fare of trash that spans the entire age of film. I was, am, a huge fan of Mystery Science Theater 3000 and still miss it. Some nights nothing hits the spot and helps fight insomnia or an overactive brain like a good piece of cinematic pulp.-Even still, there are a large number of films covered in this collection of essays, Trash Cinema: A Celebration of Overlooked Masterpieces, that I wasn't too familiar with. Including thoughts on over fifty movies (arranged by title alphabetically) the collection edited by Rausch and Riley is useful just as another reference list of cult movie titles that a fan may want to look up.-Trash cinema (or B movies, cult classics, low budget dreck, or whatever-you-want-to-call-it) is still a highly variable beast. The spectrum runs from movies that are considered works of significant art to works that are barely watchable. In between are a lot of movies that are simply average and dull, having no particular infamy to even allow them to be 'good' trash. The essays in the collection tend to run a similar spectrum. As is fitting the genre, the essays are not remotely academic. Most are written in a colloquial language like the author is just talking to a friend at the video store. But they still vary in quality or usefulness in reading. A few I thought did little more than provide a film synopsis. The ones I enjoyed most got far deeper into some kind of analysis, and most entries at least did some.-The movies discussed also run a spectrum across genres within this category of trash, from older movies to newer, SF to noir to horror, ones that are relatively tame to ones that have more adult violence or other depravity. Some trash movies of course try to push the envelope of depravity - or at least shock.-One of the interesting points that came up throughout the essays dealing with this type of cult picture is that they often elicit very different responses between viewers, and even within a single viewer. Some days I can watch Cannibal Holocaust without a care. Other times I get hung up with troubling aspects. When is the shock used as artistic commentary on the society of the day? When is is just crass exploitation? When is it something that should revolt and offend beyond reason? Sometimes an extreme film is a bit of all of these things simultaneously.-Movies that fall in the extremes of the trash camp won't be for everyone. For instance, I personally can handle a great deal, but my limits are reached with much of the 'torture porn' variety. Yet Bloodsucking Freaks proves an exemption for me, the overall subversion and gender themes of the movie make it more interesting and watchable for me. But obviously not for all. But again, a large number of the films in this - the kind for instance that also have been on MST3K (like Manos, the Hands of Fate) aren't particularly shocking to an audience of this day and age. Apart from perhaps their quality :)-The advent of DVDs killed off the wide range of trash availability I could find with VHS. Recently I've found some Roku streaming options for these kinds of movies (Netflix is poorly lacking for the most part). So this collection was welcome and gave me good ideas for titles to put on my "to watch" lists, and also forewarned me of a few that I can tell won't be for me. A decade ago, I'd watch on average perhaps 20 films a week, and those who know me would know I'd pick Jess Franco, John Waters or Ed Wood over Bergman or Truffaut any day of the week, and I would scour eBay for VHS versions of obscure movies starring Dyanne Thorne (this was back in the day before everything was available on DVD or online; I'm getting old)."Trash Cinema" contains essays about 55 films most people probably have never heard of. Those new to exploitation films will be introduced to Al Adamson, Matt Cimber, "Ilsa" (Dyanne Thorne), Russ Meyer, "Frankenhooker", even the world's smallest action hero, Weng Weng, the Indonesian "Lady Terminator" and, of course, Ed Wood. The essays are written by many different authors. Some are short, some are longer. Many of the authors recall the first time they heard of or saw the movie they're writing about. Some of the films are analyzed (or as in the case of "Blood-Sucking Freaks", over-analyzed). In his essay of "Cut Throats Nine", C. Courtney Joyner gives us a very informative history of horror/westerns. Some of the essays contain spoilers (most notably "The Baby", I just skim-read most of that one because I may want to see the movie and the plot descriptions were way too detialed) but most of them just make you want to see the film in question.Whether you're new to trashy movies or have watched hundreds of them, this book should be a fun read. It gave me some new movies to check out and it even almost make me want to watch "Manos: The Hands of Fate" again. This book introduces a game which called Minecraft that is really awesome as a comparison to the real game you would love reading it as it entails a lot of information how to dwell your character. Good read for (young) Minecraft fans By Helpful Advice ‘The Knights of Wardland‘, written by Minecart Ward is unofficial Minecraft novel that means an original work of fanfiction which is not sanctioned nor approved by the makers of Minecraft.Actually being one of many players around the world that spent “few” hours playing Minecraft I can this is great supplemental story mostly for young readers who love Minecraft.The story is easy and quick to read with its less than 70 pages and actually this is the first episode of future “The Knights of Wardland: The Diary of Lost Souls” series.I would not spoil the fun of own discovery, especially in story of such size but as short introduction Knight Steve is a knight of Wardland, an order of knights that is sworn protecting the Minecraft world of Wardland. Suddenly one day, Steve will receive a diary from an unknown and mysterious player, soon finding out the diary talks to him…“The Knights of Wardland” is this author’s (evidently big Minecraft fan) debut work for children, though not the first work he published. And based from my impressions so far, I can say the series he started could be certainly recommended for younger readers.Looking forward to Episode 2!I was given a copy of this book by the author for the purpose of unbiased review, while all the presented information is based on my impressions.

Minecraft books normally aren't :)But I noticed you put your name in the book......As the name of the knight leader, the name of the kingdom, the name of the castle, the name of the temple, the name of the apartments...XDI also noticed you mixed up Knight Ward's name with Knight Steve's name sometimes...But this book was very entertaining, I never got bored, and I would love to see part two come up! =D

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Revisiting the Kinnisons By Rosemary Liberty needs to escape from an abusive relationship. She takes a chance and contacts her half-brothers. Even though she has never met them, Wyatt, the oldest, offers her a place to stay. They all make her welcome except for Rein.He's no relation but he is protective of "his" brothers. He distrust Liberty. They fight continually until their powerful sexual attraction brings them together. Rein needs her but is afraid to commit. When her ex-boyfriend's goons arrive, Liberty needs their help. Can they protect her? Can love change her life? Rustler's Heart is a romantic and exhilarating adventure. I love being there for Wyatt and Aimee's wedding and seeing Dalton work his charm on all the ladies. The story is fast-paced and filled with danger. The dialogue is snappy and all the characters are memorable. I love the Kinnisons. I can't wait for Dalton's story. Amanda McIntyre has done it again with this entertaining and solid story.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Love Love Loved this book By Lorie W. When an unknown sister gets in touch with the Kinnison Brothers it is bound to turn the ranch upside down. Liberty is the sister that the brothers had never known. She is running from an abusive boyfriend and the only place she knows to go is to her brothers that her mother had told her about before she passed away. Wyatt asks Rein to go to the bus station to pick her up and what he sees is unlike anyone in the small town. Rein and Liberty are totally different on the outside, but they are more alike than the eye can see. The tension between the two is something that they can't deny.I really enjoyed this book. Recommend it to anyone who loves a fun and intense romance story. Part of a series, but can read it as a stand alone book.

Romantic Country romance By Nicole Laverdure I truly enjoyed reading Rugged Hearts, Amanda McIntyre’s first book in The Kennison Legacy, which was the story of Wyatt Kinnison and Aimee. So I was looking forward to read her next book RUSTLER'S HEART. Again, Amanda did not disappoint me. I really loved the story of Rein and Liberty, the half sister of Wyatt and Dalton. Rein is chosen to pick up this wild young woman at the bus station, but as soon as they meet, he is amazed and surprised by the woman in front of him, who calls herself Liberty Belle. She just left the big city to forget her past and just wants to find peace! Will she find it with her “brothers”? Will this be a new beginning for her? I recommend this book, especially if you love Country Cowboys! This author is a great writer and I just love reading her stories. Looking forward to read Dalton and Angelique’s story!

She is just such an amazing author!This is the third book in the line-up and it just keeps getting better with each book! I loved reading Draven, Ran and Melissa (AMAZING), then came Drake, Quill and Tara's story (even BETTER) and finally Sterling, Gentry, and Roxy (best yet!).Starting with, our hero Roxy saves a man from being ran over by an oncoming train and ends up getting kidnapped. I future seeing dragon pal sees her being tortured and when he informs his partner they know they have to save her. Roxy has a bumpy passed with an ex-boyfriend that continues to haunt her. Even with two deliciously strong dragons there to protect her, she is kidnapped again and must be saved. While facing more WYERNS to rescue their mate, Sterling and Gentry find an unknown enemy... a ... (gotta read to find out!)In the end everything works out amazingly! All is happy and there is an unexpected surprise at the end and I REALLY am hoping for more stories around the surprise!!!! but if not its an awesome way to end the series!

Gentry is the purple dragon and in charge of his region, Sterling is his dragon partner and has always felt indebted to Gentry for choosing him instead another dragon. Gentry has a vision about a dragon-heart being captured and killed, so Gentry and Sterling fly to the rescue. Roxy was kidnapped by people pretending to be the press after rescuing a man who was pushed in front of a moving train. She is rescued by two of the most gorgeous men she's ever seen and agrees to spend a week with them to see if they are compatible to be mates. Even after being rescued, Roxy is still in danger and Gentry and Sterling are trying to not only keep her safe but they are also trying to gain her trust to prove they can be the best mates a woman could ask for. I absolutely love the dragon series, I hope there are more to come, but if not, this was a great book to end the series!!! Thank you again, Terry Bolryder, for another fantastic read!!!!

Each has their own reason to keep things from the other, however when one can read any mind keeping secrets from him is difficult.Roxy is a hero. In her case that means trouble. She is captured and held. Gentry foresees her capture and the resulting torture. He cannot let it happen. Sterling, his partner, knows that not only is she a hero, she is a dragonheart and could well be their mate. The third to complete them.A rescue doesn't make her safe. The visions remains unchanged, meaning she is still in danger. By becoming their mate she is not only protected by her two strong dragons there is more benefit that being loved and cared for by two unbelievably sexy guys whose goal it to please her. Wow—talk about every woman's dream. That very fulfilled dream is why they cannot understand her hesitation. While Roxy knows she cares and that life would be a dream for most, but she has her own dream. Is she ready to give up her dream after only a couple of days. What do they want. She's been kidnapped, rescued by DRAGONS. DRAGONS ARE REAL.Learning the history and what makes each of them who they are is sometimes emotional, sometimes funny, yet fulfilling to watch them overcome some of that history. This final book is filled with heat, humor, emotion, love and an understanding of what is necessary to make any team work.A very satisfying love story. Terry Bolryder never disappoints this is a winner and definitely a reread.I was provided an ARC for an honest review.
